Some nice portraits. Your oils are dominated by warm colors though. Try some purely cool color excercises.

Awesome stuff Blue, haven't got many crits. I'd love to see more whole body pieces, you're getting very good at the head and bust portraits.

Ah crap, I haven't posted in a while. Time to stop slacking. Here's a CHOW WIP. Well, not really a WIP cuz the final is an ortho, but you get the idea. Will post more soon.

Some more stuff I did in drawing class. One is charcoal and conte, the other is ink with a brush. I was told to take a different approach than I usually do.

Started a painting today from ref, still blocking it in, but like how it looks so far. Might go digital over the top for a different scene.

Hey blue, love the ink drawing. I can't really make out that wip, maybe cos it's just base colours .

Hey Severin. I miss a day and your page is twice as long! Chow WIP is looking good. It's good to see some other work, like your expirimentation. I like the ink brush one... the face bugs me a little, but i know it's ink . Oils is going well too, can't wait to see more.

Went to figure drawing again, decided to try my hand with the tria marker. First one was a quick study, and the second one was a much longer pose.

Thanks guys, for the crits too. Portrait group again, decided to try monochrome oils, work on value and edges and such without worrying about color. Faster and easier. Actually keeping up with this daily update thing, hope it continues to work out.

Hey severin, looking good. I love the figure lying down. watch the scratchy lines. Portrait rocks my world, i think its your best yet. I'd use some white to make the light edges sharper and add in some highlights. Keep up the dailies, the discipline will help you later in life, as well as help your sketchbook show your progress and daily struggles. Looking forward to more.

That last portrait is great, have you ever tried the burnt umber picking excercise (or something like that)? You coat the whole surface with an even coat of diluted burnt umber (or color of choice, mind the value) and with a rag you pick the paint from the lighter value areas. Sounds like fun and interesting.
Love those trias studies. Watch the neck in the second one, it needs some black lines overlapping to define it's form, it's lookin flat right now.
    Cheers!

Sounds like fun Fedezz. Yeah, this was terra rosa and wiping on a green tinted white. Another daily. Was hanging out in a hooka bar, where the lighting wasn't very good, and decided I needed better lighting, so this one isn't finished. Got a bit heavy handed early on, so I'll have ot go back in and fix details.

    Hey blue!

I love the sketch of that knight, some very nice design of the armor. The marker stuff looks cool too, I'm not sure how well tria markers work (I use copics) but it looks like either the paper is too heavy for it or it's drying up. I usually work on bleedproof paper as it eats less marker and the marker flows on more evenly and nicely onto it.

Awesome concept. I think the roughness actually adds to it. 2 things i see that detract from it - the squiggly spike on the far left doesn't fit with the rest of the costume. Other thing is i think you should darken/obscure his face a little more, knights are cooler when they are mysterious. Keep it up.

I really like that last concept, rendering's looking good. My 2 cents: check the upper part of his left leg, it looks too thin and straight (and maybe too short?), and it's not relating well to the rest of the body.
I've found a post explaining the burnt umber pickout technique in detail. Sounds interesting.
    Cheers!

Thanks for the crits, might have to try Loomer's technique. That sketch needs a bit more love yet. Here's a plein air I did today, but I'll post something else too, since I slacked yesterday.

Nice plein air. My crits would be to clear up that area above the yellow tree a little - i'm not sure what's going on there. Also, add a little more detail to the closest thing, the only real focus right now is brought in from the contrast of the sky/mountain and the tree/mountain, a little detailed spot would be nice. Over all i think it's an improvement, you did handle those contrast points well, the lighting is kind of dynamic and the underpainting showing through is a cool, autumny look. Keep up the regular updates, you're doing good

Thanks man, that pleain air stuff is fun to do, but hard to get right, so I'll just keep working at it. darn, didn't make the chow deadline, but oh well, have most of a cool ortho done. Here's the side view, might add more armor to it.

    hey,
the poatrait is looking great , the other oil would look much better if you brang some detail into the trees. The last digi is looking good , except the torso almost looks as if it was done from the front and then cut in half, and i would take a bit off his feet and yeh give hm some more armour.

    keep it up ,james.

Hey blue, i like the concept I think you handled the values very nicely on the back shot. On the profile, the arm looks a little out of place to me, i think it's too bright... although i can't tell exactly where the light source is coming from... maybe that's the problem? Also, as you work on him more you may want to put a cast shadow on the ground as well. I love the little visor thing he's wearing Keep up the good work.

Damn, it sucks that you couldn't make it time, I'm diggin the concept, and it looks very consistent ortho-wise (alignments and the such). Hehe, I love his big metal shoes. The sternum in the profile is protuding a tad too much, I think that's what's bugging james. Oh, and the bg is a little bit ditracting, specially for an ortho. Make it simpler, somenthing like a subtle gradient. Please finish it!! I want to see the end result.
    Keep the goodies coming!

The painting of the bloated women is B-ZAR, very vivid. The stealth attack painting is super coolio, but I think the female is leaned a bit far forward. Looks like you're making good efforts to pick up anatomy.
The assignments thread is at: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1053297
I'll be posting the revised drawing of the creature later today, please ignore the one thats there already.
Also, the creature you'll be modeling now has nips and naughty panties as a result of your 'most of your stuff looks flat' comment

EDIT: those were page 1 comments....

I like the direction you're taking with your life drawing. If only the lines were more unified and a little more responsive, they'd be striking. Keep on it.

heheh, Listing, and now I'm back to doing stuff that I was doing before. Another colored pencil drawing. Head may be a bit small, looking back at it now, dammit. Sorry SUH, I didn't realize there was another thread to post that stuff. I'll get mine up for you. Nipples + Panties = hot.
