If you're not participating in DEEP, you should! It's totally neat! First I drew a lot of deep sea robo-suits, then I saw Iron Man. Now I can only draw robot dudes!

A guy I just started drawing. There was a lot of evolution in this one. It quickly got clear I wanted some kind of funky anatomy on this one. He's got a veeery wide chest. Then the costume and weapon kinda developed along the way. It was a fun ride!

Hey thanks for your first post in my new SB
Your hands seem to be strong lately! Your last robot guy is fairly strong. I'd like to see you use maybe 2 or 3 pencils (maybe 2H, 2B, 6B) in your sketches, maybe some ink pens, china graph marker etc. I'll do the hands tonight. Big thanks for the push on that. Just about to post a pencil SB dump so the hands will be posted afterwards.

Quick Crit:
Your guy in #241 is heavily distorted. I know you wanted a wider chest but the legs look as if they are in a different perspective to the top half. I'm sure you've spotted this though!

I think the biggest problem with the legs are that they are different lengths. But there are problems all over that guy, thanks for pointing it out. I'm gonna pay more attention to perspective next time!

WHY? Why do I always wait with updating my sketchbook until I have over forty pages to import, crop, colour correct and upload? This turns into a viscious circle, where I first say 'I've got so few pages, I wont bother updating' and then going 'I've got so many pages, I wont bother updating'. Whatever man. Lets DUMP.

Update... I haven't been drawing much lately. Here are some doodles and some robots.

Looking good man! Cool robots. If you haven't already, you might want to check out Jon Foster's robot paintings.

The main thing that I'd say is that you definitely have the separate skills, you just have to bring them together. Focus and make sure your proportions are down good. Be aware of following the form with your strokes when you render. I sometimes find that it also helps to get up for a few minutes and walk around if you get stuck. It kind of helps reset your eyes so you can notice mistakes you might not have seen before.

Anyway, keep it up man!

Heya! Cheers for posting in my SB now and then. Best I return the favour, eh?

Just thought I'd drop by and lay a few tips:

1.) Keep sharpening your pencil. A recurring trend I see in your drawings is blunt edges, thus undefined shapes. STEADTLER make awesome sharpeners and don't cost much. ^_^

2.) Slow down a bit. It looks like a lot of these are speedily drawn without too much thought put in before making a mark. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I just think that some more life studies to test your patience and observational skills would benefit you a lot. Would help train your eye to judge proportions better as well.

Otherwise I think your rendering skills are well on their way and I admire the effort you put into them. You have a much tighter grasp on the stuff than I do!

I can see depth of form developing in your work! I think keeping the pencil sharp would pay off, or if you can't be bothered to sharpen all the time just invest in a mech pencil! 0.5 should do the trick. I like the black HB lead the best for a biiiig range of values pushed out of the one lead. Big time saver! Your life sketches are tasty! Keep them up, I'm liking where you are heading with your work. Excited about Atelier school coming up?

Hey, sorry for not updating in a while! I guess I've just been lazy as usual. Oh, and I've moved to another country as well!

There ARE some unposted sketches from before the move that I just haven't photographed yet, and probably won't in a while, because the setup I have here is really bad. Meanwhile, you can gaze at my first results from the Atelier below. For more, go to my brand new thread Another Classical Atelier Thread in the Fine Arts section.

So, my first impressions. Well, it's a very inspiring atmosphere. The 19th century building is beautiful, and the walls are cluttered with drawings and paintings. The people are nice, and the instructors are good.
I knew that Bargues were going to be hard, but never expected the teachers to point such small details! Every little dot and dash needs to be right! But now that I'm on my second, I realize how much I've learned from the first one.
The program is pretty well balanced, most of the time we work on the Bargues, but every now and then there's something else going on. I've already done two figure drawings and one (totally failed) portrait drawing. I'm also participating in The Seed, which is like a DSG that spans two weeks. Next week we'll have a lecture by Max Patte of Weta Workshops!
But at the same time as I understand that we need to "learn diligence before speedy execution" (as the first quote of the week said), I sometimes feel the curriculum is a little too monotone, and realize I need to do much different exercises on my own as well as work in the school, if I want to do more that be able to paint models and still lives after I've gone through the education. After all, my dream is to become a concept artist or illustrator or some other profession within the industry, so I need many sets of skills to do that. I guess. But overall, my first impressions with the school are very good indeed!

Wow. Over a year since my last post. It's time to resurrect this thread! As you may or may not know, since my last post I've been a year at Atelier Stockholm, returned to Finland and I am now going to a local art school here. Obviously, it's a normal art school, so they don't teach you anything there. We'll see how long it lasts. Meanwhile I'm looking up to the seemingly impossible goal of attending The Art Department here on ca.org sometime in the future.

I'll kick off with some sketches I've done over the last year... I'll divide them into several mini-dumps.. Soon I will be posting current work again!

Hello everybody! Thank you Amanieu!
I'm working hard on getting a respectable portfolio ready in time for the TAD application deadline! So right now critiques are more needed than ever! This is my plan for the ten images:

1-4. My four best drawings from Atelier Stockholm. It's a shame to say that even though it is soon a year since I had to quit that school, the works I did there are still my best ever. Really shows what a difference a good school with a solid curriculum can make to you!

5. The Space Marine drawing I'm working on.

6. The Fantasy Viking drawing I posted earlier. I've finally finished that one...

7. A still life. Right now I'm drawing a very simple still life of a plastic duck, and I'm going to try to paint it in oils. The one that turns out the better goes into the portfolio!

8. I'm working on a copy of a portrait by Titian. Hopefully it will turn out good enough so that I can include it in my portfolio with confidence.

9. A self portrait.

10. And finally, a new illustration I've just started working on. It's somewhat inspired by the conceptual portrait thread in the discovery forums, but it's not based on a real person.

So, full steam ahead, and if anybody wants to nominate me for the scholarship here, I'd love that!

Great stuff! Lot's of talent here. Keep doing those studies. Practicing with tone is great and you're doing it terrific, but try not to forget the other stuff (drawing more 3d-ish). Everything looks very good, great sb!
