damn you're updating a lot. My suggestion is for you to work out the outline of the face before starting on the detail, I think you're working on detail then figuring out the outline am I right?? or am I way off..

Heyyy. What's up? I like your sketches. Seems like you draw a lot from photos or print. I find that difficult to do, but you have handled it pretty well. Nice. You've posted a bunch of head drawings but not as much body. I would be interested to see some more of your figure work. Keep it coming!!
and now just a small critique/observation. Most of your portraits are pretty decent in terms of proper proportions, but I did notice that the Padme drawing is not quite right. The eyes are slightly too high on the skull. I think that simple correction would help the sketch tremendously if you ever decided to do a third version.
Ii'll keep looking out for more! take care

Hey Tullie
Nice practice with the planes of the head.
As a suggestion to do if you feel to is when it comes to practice getting the values( =tones) correct and to set the overall darkness or eh lightness in ones drawing from the beginning. You could take a knife and scrape your pencil over your paper so you get graphite "powder" on the paper and carefully rub it with some e.g piece of toilet paper until you get an even grey tone. Think of the grey as the mid tone look at the picture (or drawing or real object) that you want to draw and look for it’s mid tone. Now think of that tone as the tone you have on your own paper. It’s not the reality in the tones that counts but the relations between the different tones that counts. This means if you want your drawing to be darker you make your initial toning of your paper darker and of course lighter if you want it to be lighter and it still will be “correct” and you have consciously set the darkness/lightness of your drawing from the beginning. Anyway use your pencil to go darker and for the highlights you use your eraser. Take your time to see all the shapes of the different values and their transitions (are they soft or have a hard edge etc) This has helped an amateur like me and still does. As my signature says hope you understand my English.
Keep going
My sketchbook flawed to the max page 5
Ps:Hope you understand my English.
Remember my advices taste best with a grain of salt.
hey Tullie; i really like what you've got going on here. it seems to be a good amount of work for the couple of weeks you've been updating your new book. The full body anatomy sketches are really quite nice, probably my favorite just after the skulls at the very top of the page.
One anatomical thing that bothers me about the faces that you draw is that it seems like the eyes are always kind of stylized....studying some basic eye anatomy (i.e. doing say, 2 sketchbook pages full of them) would benefit your studies immensely. I'm anxious to see what you end up doing when you get to do more digital painting stuff. definitely try to work in some color and fool around with color theory.
your dedication and consistent posting is very impressive!
KEEP ON BURNING UP THE BOOKS!
hey Tullie, I like what I see. You had said that you like to draw profiles, so do I because for some reason if you find an interesting nose they are so much fun to draw! A straight on view of the face is much harder to do, so I would suggest that you try that, too. It's good practice and I've noticed that you did some plane studies, so that good, too. The planes studiey that you did looks interesting in the way that you did it; it has an almost abstract kind of feel to it. Keep plugging away.
Brent M - thanks for the links, they were really helpful. Im loving my tablet more and more haha.
Sedig - you are right about the eyes, I need to pay more attention to their positioning on the face and the way pespective changes them. My excuse for the 'pearl earing' picture is I may have been slightly tipsy whilst drawing, lol, uuuum baileys XD.
Steinmetz - I used to draw features then outline, but I don't do that anymore (actually I did ''random from ref'' like that, haha) . I was reading some artists comments, loomis I think, who said it was very bad, so I stopped. So, loomis taught me something. So yeah, I draw a rough face outline and try and build up the features.
incolorinred - thank you for your comment, Im doing some figures this week, to get rid of the cobwebs, heh. Also, Padme Version 3 coming up.
Mindflaw - great suggestion mindflaw, I never thought of that. Will def try out.
guggenmaneuver - nice suggestion about the eyes. Im trying to make the most of my current internet connection before I go back to uni ^^. CA is also encouraging me to be more consistent with 'art studies', which is great. Thank you.
madplanet - thank you, yeah its weird how I find drawing the face from the front harder than the side profile. Sometimes its like 'I don't know where to start'. The plane studies are from bridgman, I have found his work has been hugely helpful.
Thanks for everyones comments!!
I had some proper painting practice in PS, just an eye from Vermeer painting, took me freakin ages. Included the normal veiw and the 'detail' view, which came out strangely pixely.

hey tullie, your last few posts have shown some gigantic improvments, WELL DONE!!!![]()
and thats great you got a tablet, i don't know if you've had one before but they are a freakishly awesome tool. Takes a little getting used to, but you'll no doubt get the hang of it....
your sketch of the "random girl" anatomically is looking really accurate
it's really good to see some colour, about the pixelization..... do you work at high resolution, ie 300 dpi.... when working digital, i always work huge, and only zoom to 100% when your doing really fine detail
it's great to be a part of this ssg, everyone seems to be pushing everyone else, however i think Jarvis2824 is either dead, or...... no he must be dead....
keep up the great work, when does uni start up for you over there?
EDIT: BLAAAAA! sorry for posting the same thing twice...... i got rid if it
mentler, you bastard copy cat![]()

Note: the upper lid of the eye is fairly thick and would cast more shadow on to the sphere of the eyeball below it in most cases also the lashes increase this shadow effect particularly on the the outside of the eye.
Thanks for your support and may next year bring you all the best!!!

Thanks for checking out my Sb. I thought I'd come over and checkout yours. I must say you have excellent studies. Your faces are much better than mine. They look more natural. Great work and keep them coming. I'll be checking back periodically. Later!

hey tullie,
funny that you should be painting that one: i tried "covering" it in college (copying) and it turned out to be the most horrible thing i've ever done! ha ha. anyways, i like that you did the eye study... this sort of thing (along with anything that mastermind micheal mentler would suggest!) will REALLY help you out tremendously now and even down the road.
You are inspiring me! Have you seen this movie: "girl with a pearl earring?" I think i may get that dvd and do some studies from it. i don't like the story of the movie so much, but vermeer is probably my favorite painter ever. AND! bonus: scarlett johansen('s demure hotness) is THE girl with the earring.
man, vermeer's setup was super nice.
cheers,
joel
Girl with a pearl earing, great painting. I've got a copy hanging above me in the comp room staring at me as I type this.
Thanks for leaving a note in my SB.
Your drawings from mind look nice, wish I could say the same about mine. Everything I draw without reference goes horribly wrong all the time. Oh well...![]()
Kronos - thanks, Ive had my tablet for a few weeks. At first it was well tricky, but I just suddenly started being able to use it. A lot of fun ^^. For me uni starts this monday. Nooo!
Yeah, I agree about the sketch group, definately been very helpful so far and pushing to do more drawing. There is also a nice mix of styles, which is cool.
Mentler - thanks for the advice ^^. Yay.
Darkchild - My studies are okay, I should do more tho. Keep drawing those faces!
incolorinred - thanks, someone out there knows then, lol.
Joel - haha, I could only draw one eye from that picture, I had another go at drawing the whole thing and mucked it up. You are brave to copy the whole thing.
Steinmetz - haha, thanks for the comment. Now go and update your SB!
Wim - No probs, keep drawing, you'll make progress in no time. I wish I could daw from memory, but I can't ^^.
Small update:
Flowers for a change:
Another flower, was just a simple study, got side-tracked by a Hyung-Tae Kim picture I had on my computer.

Great studies, that skull is very nice. Gotta do some skulls myself. Thanks for visiting my SB.

Oooh pretty flowers :B
Work is looking nice and confident. I'd like to see some more full-figure studies rather than simply focusing on the face (something Im guilty of as well, should probably listen to my own advice)
I'm not really experienced in critiquing flowers but it looks as though you got a bit lazy with the petal shading! I'm guilty of that with faces so we'll call it even
Nice studies. I like that you have variety. Very good![]()
Morbid - Thank you, yes; you should draw some more skulls, haha :p.
incolorinred - yay, thankyou.
SirGreenSock - You are right. Lately I have become obsessed with trying to get faces to look right, haha; okay not obsessed, but hey.
Steinmezt - You're spot on there - got totally bored with shading in those flowers, thought 'sod it' haha ^^.
Fooxoo - thank you,.
Lets start off with this hyung-tae kim piccy that I did a quick sketch of and then used it as a excuse to colour, which I didn't finish. Didn't take long, twas super fun. More fun than chocolate, and thats saying something.
The rest are hogarth studies... ^^

(I don't wanna sound mean or anything.... ^_^)
About your digital arts. It's OK. It's not exactly the best thing the world. I think it's better for you to use the real medium before you go painting in PS and experinece the real thing before you go digital because it's very much alike going from palette to computer.
Normally you go from dark to light in a normal painting. You build up colors. It consists of many many different layers of paint.... You don't simply mix colors on the painting either. =/ You mix them on the palette.
I suggest you find a picture of an apple and to paint it as an exercise for painting.
^^;;;
(Color painting isn't easy as drawing)
^_^ I'm learning acrylics, I started using those before I got a tablet. To me painting comes second to drawing. I can't paint a drawing, unless im satisfied with the line work. I rarely get to practice traditionals, because, alas, my degree has to come first, (damn it! haha)
The mechanisms of painting; I understand them as much as I have taught myself. In PS I use layers, I never smudge or 'blend'. I use varying gradients of colour over each other. Though I usually start with the lightest and then work towards the darkest. Pretty much the same for traditional. I'll give the apple thing a go. I never paint apples, should be interesting.
Drawing... easy <_< >_>, I don't find it easy.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

Nice Hogarth studies. I've done lot's of them and they really help. My only suggestion is to concentrate more on construction than on making these drawings clean.
Keep it up![]()
I can't wait to see some of your acrylics, I'm working in oils so we could sort of help each other out.
With you figure drawings they just look to me like you've spent alot more time on the shading and getting tone than actually working out the proportions. You'll have to tell me your technique
Hey hey, had a go at *dramatic music* Padme: Version 3. I think that maybe her eyes are getting slightly lower each time, haha. Anyway; had to be really quick with this one cos Im mega busy and Im trying to watch Lawrence of Arabia. Hah,full of excuses ^^;
Farvus - thank you, construction is good, will apply more. I drew some 'constructed legs' the other day, they look alright.
Steinmetz - Cheers, I think I will need your help, haha. I will post some of my acrylic work, when it starts looking okay.
Yeah, with the hogarth studies i wanted them to look nice cos I had a headache at the time as was thinking 'must have nice things to look at...' The pictures look a lot better in my sketchbook ^^.

Thanks for taking a look in my sketchbook, everybodies critism helps me a lot so thanks for yours. Your sketch book looks very nice I must say and I will do more anatomy. Keep up the good work and see ya around.

ahhh great updates!
Padme is looking a lot better. The features look more feminine. good expression.
The pic with the girl in yellow looks cool. Really fun colors going on there.
I think your figure drawing has improved since the last one. Your lines flow better. Keep working on the figure.
i like your sketchbook.
