hey everyone this is my official book of all of my sketches and works im trying to do for my college portfolio. I am trying to go down to SCAD for an illustration degree. Most if not all of my artwork will be in traditional media so be sure to critique and enjoy

well heres a watercolor painting i just did for my illustration class. this is probably my 7th thing ive ever done in watercolor so im not that great at working it yet. the red is alot darker and less orange btw but my scanner doesnt scan stuff 10x20 inches=/

and heres a pencil drawing of the same car. The teacher wanted a monochrome and a color version of the same thing to push my shadow and highight work. this was done in pencil which im most more comfortable in. same size as the watercolor so i had to use camera. I do alot of big stuff so its mostly gonna be digital camera cept for my pencil and ink stuff.

Here is something im working on for illustration class. It is the headless horseman and its done in acrylic. I also am not too good at this medium either because of my inexperience with it. the piece is on a 20 x 30 illustration board so i have to take pics of it. I decided to go with an actual hessian uniform instead of the standard medieval uniform for the horseman. I went by the poem and also made him massive and foreboding so any c&c is welcome.

full thing so far ( will be adding ichabod crane and a background)

detail shot of a hopefully finished leg ( please tell me if lighting is correct since light will be coming from ichabods lantern and illuminating the underside of the horse)

hey epiphany,

the car is ok, and from what i can make of it, the guy on the horseman is a start, but the detail shots, as you say, are quite blury, to which is difficult to discern much of any detail at all-especially the horse legs. GTry going back a few levels on the zoom, and fix the quality/resolution of the picture so we can get a clearer image.

Hey man, cool to see the motivation of working on a portfolio. You gotta just keep grinding away. I'm liking the last graphic piece you did, one small crit though; it might be just me but there seems to be a little too much negative space on the left side of the head, it makes the piece a little unbalanced and more weighted towards the right side. But either way, keep it up and post more work! Cheers!

I am also working on a school assignment which is to draw a fullsize self portrait of myself. It is to be done in pencils and i should have the pics of it up on thursday or friday.

Yeah it will be 48 inches tall by 54 inches wide. Just for the sake of the drawing being somewhat manageable i made it so im sitting with my knees bent.

Here is a WIP of my full sized seld portrait. im really happy with the skin but nothing else. i realize my head isnot in proportion with my body. So i am going to redo it and make it slightly bigger to make it better. C&C welcome.

LOL alot is wrong with being fat. Its a long story but everyone in my family is large and in charge and well ive been dieting so woooooo! When everyone sees me in Montreal ill be alot of alot skinnier. But yeah I am also gonna be posting a huge update on monday night. So everyone be ready muahaha.

Hey it's great to see your work. Your values in the black and white drawing of the car are good. The color one could be pushed a little farther by studying the real color of those highlights on the red paint. The full size self portrait would be hard to do. I think it must have been hard to draw that big. Did you or your camera crop off part of the head and feet? Nice foreshortening on the arm. Did you do that all in pencil? Geez.

Alright from now on i will try and make this a daily sketchbook. I am tired of my lax attitude and im going to try and bring my skills up. here's an update for all devoted thread watchers.

this is bill hes an idea ive had for a long time.

This is is my completed self portrait. To give you an idea of the size thats a half a piece of plywood attached to the back of the drawing paper. thats 48 inches by 48 inches. its all in graphite and now i wanna do it again because i know i can do it better.

some closeup detail shots

a statue i chose for reference for a drawing i did in blue and white colored pencils on blue mat-board.

and finally a still life im going to start in charcoals. the teacher wants to see the ceiling tiles but isnt quite sure about the las vegas sign yet. this is the best angle i could get since the drawing one students ( im the only drawing two student. others couldnt handle the craziness of the schedule) took up all the other spots. so im stuck drawing it from the floor but i think the angle lends itself to a nice compositional piece. Any C&C is always welcome.

Sorry that I didn't commented before, but man, that self portrait that you did was amazing! Principally for the size of the canvas and I loved the values that you used.

I think that you need to practice more the basic structure of construction of the objects, animals and the human body, so it'll be easier to draw anything you want from your mind instead of using references only and it'll make your knowledge rise, so when you're going to work from a reference the result will be a lot better.

It isn't a bad idea to learn how to do a basic construction but I think that you can't use that during art classes, because generally the teachers give you some time to draw the stuff they asked for, right? I've never been in an art colegge class, so I don't know how it really works... I'm just supposing things here. But having the basic construction in mind, after all you don't need to draw that always, will help you a lot in having control of what you draw.

Good Idea Devil-Inside. I see what your saying. what i really wanna do is get my rendering skills down pat so then i can learn how to draw from my head. I was always told to sraw what you see and see and draw from life because thats the only way to get better.

Nice stuff! That self portrait piece is insane, I'd go crazy working at that kind of scale. :p It looks like you could work on your anatomy some, but most of the pieces so far have really nice values. Love the car, by the way, both color and monotone. And I definitely love that flyer for the hair place.

I remember seeing "Bill" somewhere else on the forums, weren't you making a comic out of him or something? I remember it being a great idea but then I never found it again...

The self portrait is good, but as you said it could be better. I have never attempted a piece that large, it must have been very difficult. I'd really like to see you follow through and rework it like you mentioned. A few things that jumped out at me: your left arm is nicely rendered, but your right arm (the one going up to your face) feels a little wonky to me. Particularly the hand. Perhaps the knuckles should be a bit higher up and showing less of the top of the hand? Also, the hair (both facial and on top of your head) feels a little cut-out and cartoony. Play a little bit with texture in that area. (But then again, I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of the detail I would see in real life because of the angle of the photo.) I relly like the close-up detail of the jeans. At the moment I couldn't crosshatch effectively to save my life. Something I definitely need to work on.

I was going to mention that in the study of the bust his face looked a little flat, but then I looked back at the refrence photo and realized it's just the angle of the statue. In that case, my only crit would be to try to smooth out the highlights in the neck, as they seem a bit too pronounced. I think you did really well rendering the hair, though.

They let you take photos of the still-lifes in your school? Where I'm at, that's very bad mojo. Grounds for expulsion if I'm not mistaken. All works are to be drawn from life in the studio... (which is a pain in the ass if you are working full time as well as going to school.)

Thanks LoTekk and Steinspinne for the encouragement and the crits. The reason i take pics of the still lifes is to show the angle i worked off of. I nnnnnnnnnnnnnnever will take pics of a still life and then draw from the photo. My teachers would rip me a new one. I didnt explain the David drawing completely. My teacher wanted one lightsource on the statue. so i put the bust on a light table ( for tracing ideas and such) and turned on the light. i then proceeded to turn off every other light in the room so it was pitch black. So thats why the highlights are so extreme.

I agree with what you said about not using photo refs for still lifes. You (we) will definitely learn more drawing from life. I'm currently working on one (due tomorrow, black and white conte on grey paper) that came down last night at 8:00. The school opens at noon on Sundays, but I had to work from 1:00 - 9:00, so I was forced to simply work out the extreme highlights and shadows of the drapery before leaving and hopefully tonight I can do the rest from memory without mucking it up too badly. Sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place there...

Wow! That self portrait is crazy! Looks like you've got a lot of patience. I wouldn't have made it past the first piece of paper.

I would have to agree with what has already been said above, especially what Devil-Inside said about structure and construction. I think working on that more before working on your rendering would be more benficial because you will need a better knowledge of construction for drawing what's in your head. Structure for the foundation of the drawing, then rendering for the icing on the cake. You're off to a good start and I can tell you've got the dedication. Let see some mo!
