    Ares and Cranioderm

Here's the two other pieces from the latest Hecatomb set. These were the most fun for me. I had to give a whole new twist to Ares;in a way I've never seen him before. The Cranio derm is a creature that spawns duplicates of right from its flesh. I hope to continue to do more of these Hecatomb pieces, they are tons o' fun.

i like the way you use the light.Very interesting ideea on Ares.It is true that a inveres seen Ares represented like that, cool.

About the Cranioderm creature , it looks cool and scarry, but i think you cand improve a litlle his "derm" part , like liitle sparks and highlights to make it look somehow wet.Right now the pose of the creature and what is happening on her back gives me a great sense of action wich is in contrast with the dry look of the skin.

    Anyway good drawings, powerfull.

glad you like em. I'd love to post a WIP but I flattened all of my layers in PS. I'll try to dig up the pencil sketches though and post those; that's the best I can do. I'll try to post something, if time permits, on how I approach pieces like these.

Dan, thanks for the input and I understand your suggestion. I just didn't want everything to be glossy so the little heads would stand out a bit more. Good point though.

    Thanks,
    Mitch

    pretty damn nice,
I really like the Ares piece, and the cranioderm too. not sure what a cranioderm is supposed to be, but it looks cool. however, I saw a Wayne Reynolds illustration of Aresfrom Dieties & Demigods that I like more, maybe you've seen it. the helmet and spear on your Ares, awesome as they are, don't seem very believable as part of a realistic culture/setting.
but hey, they still kick ass!
I'll be looking for more of your work...

Brutillus- I'm a big fan of Wayne Reynolds' artwork. I have seen the Ares piece he did and I love it. but I was going for a much more unbelieveable and less traditional look; highly suitable for a non-realistic culture/setting, don't you agree. If you study a bit closer you'll find some elements of Greek influence. The helmet is of Corinthian design; the symbol for Ares is incorporated into the face opening of the helmet. As well as the trojan style plume. Not much else though. I do appreciate your honesty though. Glad you like the art.

i like how there seems to be so much energy and movement in these...

love the colors on the top illustration nice rendering and background texturing

i really love the temperature change in the second one....going from that purple bluish background to the warm colored beast in the foreground...again..love all the movement .....dig that face creeping out his bottom lat with the teeth...

his form highlights is a nice touch too..keeping him tied to the background just slightly

    nice

    where the hell were you?
    love them...
but .. for your pleasure.. here are some crits:

    Ares:

it could use more volume - seems flat in some areas (you focused on local volumes and made it .. bumpy, yet overall it can benefit from a wider and more acurate value range). You sunk it into black in few places (around helmet again) and that ... ain; that neat
Also... the whole piece is too saturated.

Cranioderm - lovely. some lined from the initial sketch still cut iin some contours. saturation is again too strong imho - the back light is strong and fracturated and spreads the same feeling of.. "lots of highights" ove the piece.

    Big hug,

    Oblio

wild colours! they just explode off the screen.

personally, I may desaturate the first one slightly, for mood, but otherwise very cool. looks like you know your colours!
