Main Loop, i love the woman (seen from the back) in color, You did the color with pastel? it make such a nice spot (not sure if that's the right term) like when you look quickly, at glance, that image just strikes out.

Anyway here are some i did yesterday.

    hey, nice one!
    where are you studying?

I hope you don't mind a little critique!
    • some shadow shapes look flat and too hard-edged (elbow, wrist, back of far knee)
    • the closer foot is not convincing, it looks flat due to the very thin shadow on the side and the heel seems to be a strait line into the calve instead of a protruding-ball kind of shape. ankle/end of tibia looks a bit awkward as well
    • the light strokes in the background to the left of her upper arm are indicating the top plane of a box the model is leaning against. I guess that's a coincidence and would not be a problem if the perspective seemed ok
    • the gastrocnemius on her far leg looks like it is coming down too far. also the bed bug line (darker tone where light and shadow meet) might have to fade a bit more into the shadow (softer edge towards shadow) to help the form turn more
    • maybe some lost-and-found at the lower leg (melting together of tones leg-in-shadow and box/background) would add to the piece

other than that it's a good drawing, good values, nice face, nice gesture, nice rendering!
take my comments with a grain of salt, I'm probably a less advanced student than you are
    hope you post more!

Thank you. I studied at the Florence Academy of Art. I didn't ask for a critique because I had plenty of them in the five weeks it took to do this drawing, but thank you for yours.

This drawing was done using high quality Nitram charcoal on heavyweight Fabrianno paper. Here's a tip. Don't ever do a fully rendered drawing in vine charcoal. That is, if you want to keep it in original quality. Here's another tip. If you do decide to do such a drawing, don't transport it overseas. Layers of charcoal will fall off and wipe off and it will lose all of the sublety you've worked so hard to achieve.

    Here's another.

Very nice work il capo, oh to have that length of time on a drawing!!! Not entirely sure how dorian could even entertain the thought that you are a student!? wtf.

il capo: I like the second one much better! Thanks for the tips! What is your alternative to vine charcoal? (just starting on charcoal and finding out about all the differencies from graphite pencil.. In fact it seems it would be easier to name the few things they have in common, than the differencies..

    Hybridstar: heh.. well:

Don't get me wrong, vine charcoal is great. I highly recommend it, especially for student work. It is very flexable and very forgiving. If used efficiently and with a suitable paper, one can achieve great tonal results. My complaint was that a finished charcoal drawing is very fragile. Even after spray fixing (which may spraw charcoal off of the drawing) one must be extremely cautious or the drawing can be ruined.

What I used for these drawings were three levels of hardness. I began loosely with soft. I would sharpen a medium stick to a point and tighten up the drawing. Then, I would hatch over that and further refine with a sharp hard stick.

Yes, it is a tedious process. However, the ends justify the means. Work carefully enough to achieve a refined tonal drawing and the viewer will swear they can see color!

Hey figure dudes, thought I might post some of my recent life drawings.
Main Loop: likin' those color spots! "Tizzle"
Martin777: Interesting touch to the paper. Very nice
Peter Santha: Cool drawing! Very classically inspired. Enjoy the red conte on green too.

2 Huge 6 hour drawings (probably 2.5 ft. by 3.5 ft.) Trying to get my arm into the swing of it.

    5 minute studies

Gestures!!! (need the most work obviously) 20 second poses

    Figurative Artists in Virginia

    Hello,
I would love to communicate with figurative artists in virginia, especially those near Richmond. However, anyone in central, northern or eastern Virginia would be nice. Are there any good open studios in the area? Can you tell me who is coordinating them?
I look forward to interacting with you.

    dedicated to Hybridstar!

3 weeks (14 days), carbon pencil
feedback please! There is something about her I just don't like, might be the face, the weak hand and feet or a lack of lost-and-found stuff
tried to work on these during the pose, but time's up now, so..

    ah and ignore those fingernails

    Nice work Dorian.

Couple of things I find off is the right foot seems to be weightless. I know its not the weight bearing foot in this pose but it seems to be floating. Maybe you can do something with the contact area of the bottom of othe foot and floor. Maybe its the shadow under the toes that creates this illusion.

Another thing is the area around the knees and behind. It looks like its the knees are pointing towards more the viewer rather than with the direction of the right foot.

I wish I have 3 weeks to do a drawing....actually 3 hours!!! I dont even have 1 hour!! LOL. Great stuff...keep it coming...

i am a new student, still getting comfortable with human forms..i just created a sketchbook here on CA, please drop by and leave me a comment or two!
