This is the FAQ for environment of the week.
1. How does all of this work?
Every two weeks, I will be creating a new topic related to environment or landscape design. The due date for the piece will be set roughly two weeks from the announcement day, except in special occasions that require a longer round. Your task is to produce a design following the specifications of the brief, by the due date.
2. How will the work be judged?
At the end of the two week time period, a poll thread for that round will be created. The winner is decided by public vote. Votes are visible to all members. Participants and voters are encouraged to give critique to the participants - as this helps strengthen the community and the activity.
3. What does the winner get?
The winner's work will be hosted on CA in the winners gallery. You will recieve an icon next to your name representing your round win. There may be more prizes for later rounds on special occasions.
4. What are the guidelines, and why?
The focus of the illustration is the environment and its design. You may include characters or creatures, but they MUST not be the focus
This rule ensures the core purpose of the activity - which is to strengthen our environment concept and painting skills. Characters and creatures may be used in context, to show scale, add atmosphere and narrative, and so on. But the environment is the key element and is the element that should be judged with the most weight.
Colour or B&W will be accepted. Keep images to a reasonable size, and try to prevent sidescrolling.
This is self explanatory - it makes it easy for all to view the images, and easier for CA to host the winners. Please exercise logic
Stick to the topic
This is obvious, but important. Judging should be done only in accordance with the topic.
New images only, no old work, one entry only
Please take the time to create a new piece for your entry.
Take time with your artwork. While all levels of skill are welcome, sketches and wips not be accepted in this activity
This activity is run like a professional brief. Its purpose here is to give members a place to practice working to a deadline and an expected level of quality. The objective of this rule is not to high brow or enforce only professional level artists into the comp. And it is not to say that sketches are not important. It is to make sure that this activity is treated in a professional way, and that only people who are commited compete. We want to see improvement from round to round, just like COW achieved. It only achieved this through its competitive nature, and fozzy's strict enforcement of his weekly brief. If anybody could submit any sketch or wip, the activity would soon lose its purpose.
There are several places on conceptart suitable for sketchwork - wips and SKETCHES forum, daily SKETCH group, and your SKETCHbooks. Please use these for your sketching release needs!
Please include a backstory or description for your environment
This shows your ability to think creatively, flexes your mind muscles and asks you to come up with an original (or if not original, a strong) concept to back your image up. In the world of conceptart, sometimes painting pretty pictures is only half the job... your ability to think laterally and come up with original solutions is equally important.
Your backstory could be humorous, serious, scary...whatever you wish.
I hope this FAQ clarifies some of the guidelines set down for Environment of the Week. Please keep in mind that these guidelines are based off the success of C.O.W and why it was succesful. The rules are here so that every week, we can come back expecting quality and learning, not a bunch of half assed attempts. The administration of this activity will be lenient and logical - rules are a means to an end... and this is not a dictatorship. As long as the activity is kept at an appropriate level of usefulness, quality, and enjoyment, then we can do whatever we want to do. These guidelines are just here as GUIDES to stop us going down the wrong path.
Please enjoy E.O.W, we look forward to the worlds you are going to create!
