Art-Master-Fex: Quirky additions or no, that's still a tight render and showcases your attention to technique...Oh, and your comments on the backgrounds of Howl's Moving Castle were dead on...Now, I need to watch the film again for the simple pleasure of the story...

Special-K Oh, man...I guess it's best that I'm not going to be rolling down South...The wife and I tend towards the Gomez and Morticia during public social functions (exception Wes' family occassions with mixed company) and I don't think this particular outing would see us escaping the wrath and circumstance of "polite society"...Well, if they're serving Black Pearls (Blavod Black Vodka, Kahlua, Milk, Enjoy), I'm certain the fires would go over much easier...

Grackrock: Plywood bludgeoning instruments? Bashing on "The Painter of Light?" I'm starting to wonder if we aren't related...I still have money riding on my parents confessing that I was adopted and the sordid details of said "transaction"...I'm hoping it has to do with Barbary Pirates and ancient, interstellar rituals...

Well, I'm off to measure head heights and arm lengths...

GCrack- I forgot to mention. While I was sitting amoungst the group of such company, one of the ladies leaned back and asked in the most southern belle voice I've heard in awhile "Darlin' are you her son?" I looked at the woman, smiled and politely responded "No ma'am, I'm actually a member here, this is my first meeting." With a raised brow "Are you an artist by chance young man?" "Yes ma'am, I actually have some art here" I point towards my ever so slightly out of place contemporary paintings of the nude figure. "Oh...well."

Would I of been better accepted as a son of Mrs. Merry Betsy? In retrospect I wish I would of put on a fake southern accent and acted so, at least for a personal chuckle.

ADizzle- I'm really starting to make this whole odreal much more akward then I planned it to be. I'm making it sound like some hell that I'm trying to make the group aviod. I don't know, I'm just going to enjoy seeing whomever braves this event. I havn't seen arte-folk in awhile, I need some refreshment, so I can aviod the reality of living in Macon.

Okay, everybody for Steiner wearing his goblin prosthetics to the show, raise your hand!

Seriously: good luck with the show, Kenneth! Just be careful not to mention the "Civil War". If you must, be sure to call it "The War of Northern Aggression".

Honestly, this sounds like a ruse...This sounds like what's really going on is that there are a ton of talented, sophisticated "filles d'art" rawking this show and Special-K wants them all to himself...Oh, don't you think you can keep this a secret with the "old ladies and crumpets" ploy...Guggenlovestheladies is onto you and he's coming into town like Saturday Night Fever is striking a day early...Drakkar Noir and crushed daisies for everybody...Put your game face on, kids - love is in the air...

Never you mates worry...Once the summer gives up the ghost and we return to months of short days, long nights, and cool winds, I'll happily "Goblin Out" for our various outings...Right now, it's a tad too hot and I'm not one for wearing "Jams" to keep in character...I will, however, bring along a "goût de lutin" to tide you over this evening...

Artifex: Stumbled upon a fantasy gallery of paintings last night...I can really see the influence of Elmore and Easely in your work, now...I'm excited to see what directions you go that they haven't explored...

    ... k... here's fae's update:

--chances are, I won't be able to make it to macon... work is layin' on the projects and one of 'us' (the ATL creative... consisting of us three...) is being shipped out to Chicago for business with one of our clients... so... gotta hold down the fort.

--tonight is also not gonna happen for similar/different reasons. First, I need to be covering these stupid projects, and secondly, I need to try to pull together some crap and finalize it all for a long lunch break meeting tomorrow (about other jobnesses...)... so I also need to make sure I'll have time at work to take that long lunch break... etc etc etc... and my friend kinda invited me to 'dinner' before rockclimbing... so I have to see if I can stuff all this together.

AcuteDiagonal: ... forgive me for what follows tonight =O...

All: please restrain him from acting out too greatly... it's safe and fun until he starts tearin' down the place.

    -sigh-

One of those might be cool. A monolith environment, a sci-fi warrior priest, or a nuclear-powered worlds-eater. I'm sure once the caffeine starts flowing, one of those will smack my fancy.

Well, let's see...I didn't get too much accomplished in terms of creativity at tonight's meeting...Which would mean, every time Fae misses a sketchgroup, my inspiration takes a beating...Why Ms. Tso? Why do you beat my inspiration to a bloody pulp and then mock it from a safe distance?

To make up for this, I did come home and whip out 4 biomechanical-infused head concepts...No, Wes...No value studies...I stand in defiance...At least until tomorrow, when I will be rendering spheres....highlights, light mass, core shadow, reflected light, baby...

Was it ever decided when we would be rolling out for our next big CATL Call? August? August sticks out in my mind...Honestly, I'm open for anything, so just say the word and I'll be on the way...

Thanks again for the usual lively chatter and inspirational prodding...Keeps me from straying from the goal...

So, it seems like we have agreed that we want to go to the Bodies exhibit on Sunday, probably best to get there early, so as to avoid copious child chatter and clutters of curious corpse connoisseurs. Tonight was fun as always guys, I am growing to enjoy my fellow artist's company more and more.

Actually, it is quite possible that we are, in fact, related. You see, I reproduce by aesexual propagation by means of polyps. Every so many cycles I shed my gametes and they develope in to larvae. Of course, I must travel to a stagnant body of brackish water to do so. But, this just makes for a good excuse to visit the beach. My current offspring are already in the medusa stage. They grow up so fast. Then, as their nerve cells evolve from primitive gangleons to a complex bundle of nervous tissue, I throw a welcome to the phylum Chordata party and everyone graduates. Then, before you know it, they are losing their gills and developing a skeletal structure capable of supporting their body weight on land. After that, they only thing they care about is world domination.

ALSO: I have some mind shattering news that could change the lives of literaly tens of people on this forum. Are you ready for the...........Oooooh, mini-trucker magazine.

Sorry, I have to include the random movie reference of the day. Seriously, I'm coming to Atlanta on the 22. But, I'll only have a small window of opportunity with which to wreak havoc with the gang so clear your schedules now, dammit.

I think that AD and Grendel are competing for the title of, "I Drove Off the Most Guest Accounts With My Weirdness". Let's see if AssDemon ups the ante from budding offspring.

    Gauntlet cast. Gauntlet retreived.

TripleH: Interesting thing of note: Grendel of Beowulf is oft referred to as "the son" of the monster in most AngloSaxon literature classes. Grendel, formerly of Marietta, GA, is in the feminine (although her claims of asexual abilities tend to cloud this and her own offspring refer to her as "Father G" just as much as "Momma Grack.")

Grackpipe: Yes, now I am certain we are related, but purely by my own genetic deficiencies. You see, I suffer from a DNA-deteriorating [edit: mispelling, bah!] disease that causes my genetic instructions to pack up and leave, rather than reproduce - enabling celluar stability. I am in fact forced to sustain my present existence as a protochordataphage - consuming things with mouths surrounded (or ringed) with tentacles. Polyps - whether found washing along the beaches of the Eastern Carolinas or under the arms of the elderly are a delicacy in my condition and I believe that through my less-than-appropriate-in-polite-society diet, I may have eaten my way to becoming your brother...It's all very early George Lucas...

Now then, you'll have to excuse me all - I have a very important meeting to attend today and I'm a bit famished. A big bowl of my favorite cereal: Frosted Fleshy Organic Sacks calls...2% milk, kids, and each one bursting with the flavors of Grendel Grack wading in the open sea...

    oh no.

i might be out of town that weekend grack'll be down!!!! NOOOO NO NO NO =(...

ApologeticDevourer: what's REALLY happening... is that subconsciously your mind and body have been hoarding and storing the creative goodness deep within in a safe, dark place not even you can consciously reach... waiting for the time I am able to join again, so I can bear witness to the outburst of creative goodness at a relative max that has not yet been reached as of late. It'll be great and terrible! All will tremble in fear and awe, and I will stand and applaud the intensity of creativity you exhibit.

Finally: magazine articles done, workday complete, and Wes' value studies program howling at me from the drafting table. Before the evening shifts into the black and the white, let's catch up with today:

Motyka and Grendel-G in the same weekend? The stars must be lining up for something somewhere...Hmm...[note to self: consider if returning to the underground would be best for the 22nd.]

Does this mean: A) The rest of us have emerged and Guggenemergence needs to catch up? or B) Guggs is the only one worthy of RACA-tasticness? 'Cause if it's B, you'd better ask him why all the tables at The Caribou are now "Expressionist Green"...[note to self: remind Guggs to bring a bib if he's going to be dribbling art on the various CATL members again...]

I like what you have to say and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter...However, whatever unseelie curse has me making up for your absence in inappropriate fashions will not likely subside with a bi-monthly mailing...All kidding aside, I do hope things pass into a period of relative calm for you or at least slow down to a place where you're rawking each and every day...

All: I will be unable to attend Sunday's Bodies Exhibit run...Now, you all know how much I enjoy haunting around in the dark in "the room that shall not be named" (and you know what room I'm talking about, so don't make me say it here, kids), but I've got some responsibilities that I've been letting go since I've gone mercenary on the job front. I'll be more than happy to meetup for something fast and light, but I just can't get away with devoting another day to sketching the dead until I get things sorted out around The Terrorplex.

Salutations, all. Just to clarify, I will be traveling in on the 22 and won't get home until very late. It would be most opportune to gather Sunday or Monday as I am departing on Tuesday. Let me know what you guys can do.

    CATL Organizational News:

I had my usual Friday 8AM meeting with Guggentastic this morning. For those of you who have not had the experience of being awakened by Joel doing a cover of PJ Harvey's Hardly Wait, you are missing out...It is a rare treat and helps to start one's day with a breath of fire...

Firstly: Guggenleadership is busy as hell with work this week (as apparently a great many of us are) and has not had an opportunity to change the title of this thread...There is no mass CATL Meetup happening tonight, tomorrow night, or the next (so on and so forth)...He is planning something for the 22nd and then a followup gather when Grendel-G hits town...Check your various inboxes...

Secondly: I cannot give this 100% confirmation, but it appears I have permission to share the family-style traveling band we've decided to start...The working title is: Wendy Carlos' Missing Parts Traveling Ham Bone Jamboree - I personally think it needs some work, but it fills the gap for the time being. Here's the lineup, thus far:

    GuggenMETAL!: Lead Vocals/Lead Sitar
    FingerlessFretboard: Electric Flute
    FaeTso: Backing Vocals/Eggshell Ocarina
    DoktorArtifex: Rock Dulcimer/Jazz Organ
    Motyka-by-way-of-Rome: Backing Vocals/Steel Udu
    Special-K: Interpretive Dance Choreographer/Blues Lute
    Ethax'n'Scratchin': DJ/Electronic Drums/Samples/Vocal Tracks
Seansea: Corinthian Bass/Brass (the entire Brass Section)
Analog-D: Hypeman/Wardrobe/Additional vocal "Yeahs!" when needed

Our last gig really showcased what we can do...I'm looking forward to the next...

to follow up Ambient dollop's gracious informational session:
need to decide on dates: saturday 22 july - monday 24 july?

Get geared up for an awesome sketchgroup party (i'm leaning towards sunday, though this negates a vinyl record show i was planning on attending)!

flourescently foaming sketching geekout. North Carolina's very own
Grendel Grack is coming to town and bringing the unsane graphite party
    to boot.

As a way of welcome and introduction to the bizarre CATL initiation
rites, the hazy silhouette of the next MAJOR sketchgroup meeting looms
large on the horizon. We do need to nail down a date... Although i
haven't asked him formally, I believe that ethax's apartment complex
can serve as a meeting spot and we can leave from there in fewer cars
with fewer trifling difficulties. more on this at the CATL forum, to
which the link is posted below after the row of "+"s. Here are the
    basics:

    in case of fair weather:
Atlanta Botanical Gardens ( henceforth affectionately referred to as
"BOT GARDENS" ) -/->Piedmont Park sketching crunkly afterparty

    in case of foul weather:
Fernbank museum of natural history / some accommodating coffee shop
that we can dominate--> possibly sevnraiz's (from the CA forums) own
Sanfrancisco coffee? There's a caribou coffee near the BOT GARDENS
that we could go to if air conditioning + caffeine becomes necessary,
which with this groups caffeine swilling binge-addiction is highly
    likely.

The apache cafe on that artmonday night would also be an exquisite way
to roll...ethax, teh_allejo05, and i can all testify that going to
this session is a lot of fun, and cheap!

Check in at the CATL forum (the link is below) to introduce yourself,
find out the latest on what's shaking, and to get information on our
weekly sketchgroup meetings--> At this point in time we're meeting
almost every week, sometimes twice a week to hang out and draw, talk
shop, share ideas, and stain tables with indelible ink (if caribou
coffee calls out into the pasture, kindly tell them I've been taken to
the slaughterhouse). There are some of you who i still haven't
met-->and this is why i cry myself to sleep every night.

ANALOGDOLL: and anyone else interested the answer is C.) I'm an inconsiderate jerk...and I was under the impression that RACA is biast to Romans, but that's not verifiable, the number is (706)295-2787 and the name is Allen, the deadline is the end of July.

CATL: Sunday may actually work out better for me the cowmuter...I think it's necessary for us to go to Bodies again at some point before it's shipped out...and who likes danger? I have this urge to go sketching at 2:00 in the morning at some random bar - you can't beat that Lautrecian vibe.

bodies is definitely doable, though some very faithful folks who shall remain nameless aren't too keen on that as that sunday's choice--> i do in fact desperately want to go back, but go hardcore style...like 4-5 hours in the exhibit...i will announce my chosen time+date for you sallies and anyone who's down can come along for the wild guggenart-ride.

the previously mentioned items represent excellent opportunities for environment studies and conversation with our fabulous, fabulous guests will be more laid back than the near and somewhat awkward silence of the bodies exhibit

Oh, pish posh...I (and I'm certain I can speak for the rest o' the crew here) would never ever in the light or dark of day believe that you were an inconsiderate jerk...I was just having a little fun with your comment and I hope that you did not take my response as being in the negative. If you did, I offer very sincere apologies...Things are easily misinterpreted when they're written and with the amount of "detritus" I post here, I'm certain I'm more A-Hole than A-Doll...

Oh, clever use of "Lautrecian"...I did not think that I'd stumble across that reference here on the boards today...

I do know of a few establishments that offer a delightful treasure of subject matter, atmosphere, libations, and a tipping of the scales in favor of the more bohemian (no, these are not the places haunted by fraternity sweaters or gray-faced wage earners)...Doors open early and stay open late, which would keep our party off the streets...If there are other takers, I wil dig into my datebook and produce a schedule of possibilities...

    Huge Har Har --> Superstar!

***BREAKING NEWS FROM THE TREACHEROUS CATL FRONTLINES***
    So!
trevor and i just got back from representing the herd diplomatically down in Macon at Kenneth's show. Let me tell you folks firsthand that our main man HugeHarHar, he's got some amazing, amazing ideas and the pieces that he busted out for the show are so varied, textured, and oh so nice. The values on one figurative self-portrait marked my brain with the best kind of indelible-inspirational-ink. There was a friend of kenneth's, his name being Marcos, who Trev, kenneth, and i had dinner with--->heads subsequently rolled. We talked about the art of framing and indian blood with the waitress and found out about some really amazing subconcious effects that are being used in the movies nowadays. Afterwards we kicked up a CATL mini party and rocked out a few sketchjams--> The only part that wasn't cool was when i got sleepy and wasn't finishing my sentences correctly on the drive there and back. Ask Trevor--> if he's nofingers, i'm nopredicate. Anyhow, it was a total blast and such a treat to take the CATL party on the road. Kenneth and Marcos hosted us in the most hospitable manner possible...Macon us feel right at home!

Sunday the 23rd then, everyone? Sounds like HugeHarHar will be making the trip up from macon, as will my dear, dear, ROMEGA sister in ARTCRIME MOTYKA. not to mention our dealer of the deadly, deadly GRACKROCK who's gonna be making the trek all the way from the hills o' appalachia's very own BOONE.

I think we should scrap EVERYTHING and go to HOOTERS.

    hugs and gugs,
    joel

Hooter's references? Will I ever be rid of them?

I've been caved up in my hole of intellectual doom beside the pit of eternal torment adjacent to the puddle of stagnant hatred, which curiously enough, somehow manages to float an Appalachian gallion of despair for the past several days. Did someone mention a time frame for the 23?

grack--> unfortunately intellectual doom abounds here as well. Actually, i'm about to expatriate to mars. New Catlanta will be the name of my city.

re: time frame for the 23rd--> i'm thinking everyone gathers at noon (suggestions anyone?) and then we collectively improvise; good drawings and ffffffffun to be had on that day

    j

p.s. i drank an entire fleet of appalachian gallions of gravy this morning for breakfast.

I believe you only have 23 more to go, before we can finally put that beast down...

I'm curious if this is the truth or not. Because based on this little report of Hooters News, I'm guessing our friend G-Grack has decided to put that beast down on her own...

When are you going to learn, Guggs? Every time you make a Hooters reference, people die...Especially people that work for Hooters...One day you're going to rifle through your Hooters "jibber jabber" and all of those short-shorts manufacturing companies are going to suddenly go under, because there will be no Industrial Psychology majors left alive to wear them...The whole basis for our "free world" economy will collapse into the oblivion you have sown...Our world will become void of tank tops, Nair abuse, and oil-soaked hot wings...

Oh, we shall dine on the ash that is left of our once great monuments and tremble at the unrestrained ruin you have serviced us with...20% gratuity included for parties of 6 or more...
