Hello, ive been wondering around this website for about 3 months now, so i decided to start my own sketchbook. Im 14, and ive been drawing sinse i was 4 and i hope to improve. Any crits welcome ! ! !

I am 21 and I have been drawing since I was 3 or 5, something like that, I only started trying to learn at 20. Anyhoo, I only wish I learned what it looks like you are striving to learn at 14. Put some more work into the hands, Look at your own, they are the best references you will ever have just dont cut them to find the muscles, obviously, As far as heads go keep it up. Pay attention to the finer details, but your tutorial head isnt too bad at all. From the looks of it your drawings are based in life and that is the best teacher you will have. Keep it up you should have a ball.

Sly - Thx for advice, ill keep that in mind with the hands and heads. But ive done loads on heads in the last months, from Loomis!

Nice work here, for just being 14 you're doing terific.

Keep it up. I recomend loomis for the structure, but try working for a more realistic look. good luck.

thx pencilator, i do use the ball and plane when i draw heads from the book, heads and hands, but what do you mean by a more realistic look?

You've made a good start, and your pics from reference are generally alot stronger than your 'out of your head' pics.

Just remember to get the basic underlying shapes of the skull correct first, then the rest eg: placement of features etc will become alot easily.

Start with more basic shapes, like egg or circle shapes (whatever your personal preference) and then throw in the basic guide lines. Details last.

Which Loomis book are you using? It looks like his cartooning book as opposed to his more realistic anatomy book. Just curious.

SEVANS came with a good suggestion, try to see the shapes behind every thing, draw them, then make out the form and put in the details.

Hey QXZi,
You have agood start here and apparently the desire. You do need to work on the proportions and the anatomy. Work on trying the draw circles and ellipses freehand. Take a pencil or pen and draw circles and ellipses (ovals)over and over again in one place. Where the line begins to get darkest is where your best shape will be. Eventually, you can make less and less passes before getting a good shape. Heads have definite proportions. For example, it is typically the same distance from the top of the head to the eyes line as it is from the eye line to the chin. The eyes cut the head in half. The bottom of the nose is about half way from the eyes to the chin and the lips are about half way from the nose to the chin. Start there and I think the you will see alot of improvement in you head drawings. Head out to Barnes and Noble or Borders and take a look and their drawing anatomy books. You can also get all of the Andrew Loomis books on this site in PDF format. Good luck!!!

that sure is a great start! immediatly recognized that fredflickstone-tutorial drawing

i suggest combinng the loomis system you're learning with your life drawings and photo ref-drawings. just apply the "ball and plane"-scheme to your studies to get proportions and perspective right and it will improve even your master copies a lot. other than that, no big crits. you're doing just fine. thanks for dropping by my new sb.

it does show in your heads from mind, but i mean applying it to your life drawings a little more, constructing the head you see in your reference and building it up from scratch - not just to draw the outlines you see. hope i could make myself a little clearer

nice new stuff as well - how bout doing some studies of single facial features like nose, eyes and mouth?

One question tho, how far is it from the hair to the eyes. So like, how big is the forehead?

nice update Qxzi maybe add some more contrast & shading to the life drawings as u did in the 1st post.
to find out how far it is from the hair to the eyes, do studies of skulls. they'll help a lot. at least they helped me

When drawing circles, use the forearm to draw the smaller circles, and when it comes to big circles use the whole arm to draw circles... I like your dedication you have here! Your head studys will soon get better! start trying to infroce you construction lines, and really observe your reference. See how the lines are straight, and how the lines are curved and what gives it the 3 demensional shape. Remember a head isent a flat surface theres allways the bone structure the muscel structure and then the form what gives its demension.. Work hard man it will come with time...

at 14, you are kicking butt! Like it's been said before the underlying structure is really important. Another good thing to get in the habit of is to not be shy with your drawing and don't be too precious either.

What I mean by this is don't hold back when you are doing the under drawing, don't hesitate to make a mess of dark lines. if it get's so muddy that you can't add shadow or detail or anything, but the shape and proportions are good, it's still a success. You can always redraw it once you've worked out the proportions or even trace it.

When I say don't be precious with each drawing I mean, don't start with something and just keep working on it, afraid to make dramatic changes and bold lines. You'll make thousands of drawings and each one will get better and better, don't be afraid to ruin one to try something new. I personally throw a lot of stuff out, I draw the basic structure 3-4 times before I like it.

Anyway, just wanted to say keep up the great work. At this rate you'll be posting some amazing stuff soon.

I add to what spacemanchris said, a drawing doesn't have to be sucessful in every way. I may just be good at finding form, but usless in regards to tone.
Your marks so far are very tight, try loosening up a bit and you may find it easier to find form.
Great stuff, much further along than i was at 14, though i don't think really anywhere now, ha ha.

your off to a great start.the only advise i could give is to just draw whats fun for you because thats whats gonna keep you going. wheather its cartoons comics portaits etc. the most important thing is to remain passionate about drawing and you will become very good.

I wish i had conceptart.org when i was 14. pshh i didnt even know what concept atr even was.
