    Pirates! Girly Pirates!

Ahoy. First post. Yay for me.

I've been working on concepts for my senior project (a game mod involving pirates on an alien desert planet) and I've been trying to really nail down my character designs. This is the latest concept for Capain Mad Anne Flint, the main character.

I've been really trying to nail down what I want her outfit to look like, what proportions I want to use, how stylized I want it. My other (non-crappy) drawings of Anne are here:

    http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...ked_Marker.jpg
    http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7.../younganne.jpg
    http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b7...eRVpirates.jpg

    Going from newest to oldest.

I pretty much know that I want her outfit to be what it is in the newest sketch, but I can use any possible feedback. About everything.

    Arr.

The cutlasses look wrong to me. Not very constructive I know - but maybe something to look in to.

How do they look wrong? Is it the blade, the hilt, the coloring, what?

I need a little more feedback before I can fix them.

My tip would be to go check out some reference and then make the cutlass and stuff accordingly with changes you want done. I find stuff look alot more realistic when you have started out with something that actually exists.

check this one out for example http://jodysamson.com/images/swords/...s-yatagan1.jpg

Anatomy is very wrong. Hers left leg is longer than right. Legs are too big for the torso.

I suggest, take her clotes off and see what you'll get

I am going for a more stylized, Final-Fantasy-ish anatomy. I checked the proportions on some printouts of FFX-2 characters and they're incorrect as well (for real humans, of course. It works in the game.).

The problem I'm having is balancing the very graceful, pretty Final Fantasy style with the rugged sort of character Anne is. She's a warrior and is batshit insane. (There's a reason she's called Mad Anne Flint.) I want to be able to show with this work that I can do "traditional" game females (minus the enourmous breasts that used to the standard), but she is not a pretty girly graceful type. She's muscular and wiry and will throw dirt in you eyes and then kick you in the kneecap.

Anyway. New sketch, done not too long ago. There wer some things screwed up, as I'm sure you can see.

    The Original:

I made a couple fixes in Photoshop of things that looked wrong to me, but I'm sure there's more.

    The "Fixed" Version:

Feedback is my friend. If I don't figure these out in 2-D, they'll look like arse in 3-D.

Thanks for your comments so far, BTW. Studies of her weapons will be coming later.

Maybe you should put her in some real moviment. Proportions are better in this one, but shapes of bones and muscules are wonky. Take some anatomy refs and drawing classes even better.
At least get one big mirror and draw yourself.

is her left leg on top of an imaginary platform, or is it meant to be hanging in space?
if it is, there should be more emphasis on weight distribution on her right leg, similar to a contrapposto pose by tilting her hip.

Danilo: I try and draw a gesture skeleton first, and then the muscles over that. In the gesture it looks like there's movement, but when I draw the muscles I can't seem to capture the same feeling.

I did take figure drawing... But it was a year ago, and I haven't practiced as much as I should. My fault, I know. (When I start work on the male main character I can get my boyfriend to pose for me.) You say get a big mirror like it's easy. ^_~ Heh. I can't afford that right now. What I AM going to do is get the BF to take lots of pictures of me in different poses, so I can use those as reference.

Mono: She's supposed to be standing flat on the ground, but with one foot further toward the camera. I agree about the contrappasto. I think I meant to put that in but I forgot. D'oh.

    Off to sketch some more!

here's what i see: you need to draw your pirate to completion, as far as the design of the clothing merits. the anatomy, as has been mentioned, is 'very wrong' so try to simplify, until you get better. look at many fashion designers. no da vincis there.

My gods... That would be incredibly easy! That never even OCCURED to me. I'm not kidding, it never did.

Thank you so much for that suggestion.

The anatomy's not that bad, it's more or less got the proportions right, and it is at its sketch stage afterall.
