Wow, all those life drawings !!
Your doing what i should do, your dedication is really inspiring
Just keep practicing, avoid outlining what shouldn't be (noses, etc..), be patient when your shading, take attention to the simple shapes that makes the body, and you do more than good
    Keep posting!!

Thanks Recursive, I just checked out your book reecntly. Inspiring stuff! My one big failing at present is patince and attention span. I'm slowly getting more focus, but it's taking time!

Some loomis this evening. Like I said... more patience is required.

I like this piece a lot. I should really get back to studying the Bargue plates.

Hey, nice. Your latest round of portraits is a definite improvement. I'm liking your recent figure studies, as well, and those hand and foot studies are great. Looks like you're getting some good values, too.

ps. Try as you might, you can't escape Harry Potter.

Your efforts are paying off. The amount of practice you are doing is great and inspiring. If patience is an issue maybe give charcoal a try. I've found pencil feels tight and detailed to work with while charcoal, for me, feels flowing and expressive. They each have their place and use but I've just found that I get less impatient with my subject when I can be more expressive. Nice progress so far!

LoTekK: Thanks! I'm learning much more patience recently... but i've still got to pay attention more to being careful with my strokes.
JLC: I'm starting life drawing classes again tomorrow. I'll delve back into the charcoal there! Thanks for the heads-up!

Some from today... that bottom one turn out into a weird Tyler looking thing, but it wasn't the intention!

Hey Sir, Wow your work ethic is impressive. I love seeing new sketches in here so often. Can't wait to see somelife drawing! Just remember, keeping it loose doesn't necessarily mean drawing fast. Does that make sense? I guess what I'm seeing in your sketching is that it looks like you are rushing when doing the shading on your drawings. Keeping it loose is good, but it's not a race to see how fast you can do it.

Thankyou sir! I've been trying to do as much as possible. You're right about my shading too... must... slow... down!! CONCENTRATION!

Here's some from the life-drawing session this evening:

    Hey Sir,

The life drawing adventure has begun. How long was this pose? I like how you put the bones in the leg on that second one. That workshop you took with rebbeca is paying off. How did you like that workshop anyway? Would you recommend it?

Good day to you crazy3dman! Yes, the life drawing rocks. The pose was for three hours... I like these ones because they do 3 hours sessions of the same pose for 3 weeks, which means you can get a 9-hour pose in if you come to each. I'll do a more focused study (the whole time) next time I think!

And yes, Rebecca's workshop is worth it's weight. I honestly believe that!

More studies! I picked up a copy of Bridgman yesterday:

    Very good pic!
The lighting is pretty interesting. Maybe add some highlights on the reflections.
The studies you did earlier look great, keep doing those

theres a lot of variation in your stuff - i like the life studies best - those last 2 pages of hands and feet are decent! Some of it seems a bit rushed, but I guess we all fal linto that trap at times, i know I do.. I'm not really one to criticise as im learning too, but it looks like you're coming along well! keep at it!

The hands, feet, and mouth studies look good - keep them up. I dig the stuff from your life drawing session too. Looking forward seeing what comes of the next one.

Recursive_End: Thanks! For thirty minutes, it wasn't bad, I guess. I just need to stay focused.
Apocalypse_Rex: Yes, the rushed thing is my major problem, which i'm trying to rectify. I'm trying too hard, and therefore I go too fast. I need to learn more patience! Thanks for dropping by!
JLC: I'm trying to do more of these studies. They seem to be turning out well. Thank you!

Here's a couple from this evening. I've been having a relaxed weekend, so I tuned out for a while:

Hi Erilaz. Nice to see all the figure drawings, especially those hand and feet studies. Theyre a royal pain in the arse, for me at least. I love the skeleton paintings from your earlier updates too. Your sketches look good, I'd say try using broader/sweeping strokes with your pencils too, as opposed to shorter ones. Keep on updating!

You've made alot of improvements since the beginning of this sketchbook Erilaz! Most noticeably in giving your characters form. You could get some variety out of your pencil lines and that will help to give the characters more depth(the same line flattens out the picture and looks more graphic).

I'll be in MTL as well! I can't wait for that...going to be an intense 3 days.

Hey sir, Those hand and feet studies do look good. I also like the pic of the guy in the boat. Great mood the way it is. It might look cool to see some light from the lantern on the man and the boat.

You're killin me with the talk about Montreal. Oh man I wish I could go!

lukavi: Ah yes, I catch myself petting my strokes quite a lot. I forget to loosen up and just go with it. I think again, that's a patience thing! Thanks for the nice words!
otherside: Indeed! Variety be the spice of living. Montreal with be the ass-kicker of the century for me!
crazy3dman Thankyou sir! I'm quite happy how the boat pic turned out! I hadn't done a DSF sketch for a while!

More studies during work today (work is a little slow right now.. renders...)

Where do you work that you get to draw when it's slow? All of my jobs have only had me cleaning.

I love that right-most hand in the top pic(minus that 6th pinky). Are they all from books or are some your actual hand?

Hey Erilaz, nice progress, great dedication right back at you. Keep at it.

I've just flipped through, there's a huge improvement in line quality in some of these, then you seem to change tack a bit a loose the edge (I know what that's like) I guess that's the price of progress - shows how important it is to you too. Nice one.

your line work has improved over time but you still have a tendency towards the broken/sketchy lines. try to do more continuous lines.

a technique that helped me was semi blind contours: looking at the page to position/reposition my stylus, looking at the subject and picking a starting and ending point, then making a mark without looking at the page and moving my stylus and eye together along whatever line i had chosen in one, single line.

the countours would be what an instructor called essential lines. not just the outside contours, but the contours of the underlying muscle or whatever line would best describe the form.

hope that all makes sense, it took me awhile to 'get it' myself but i found it to be an excellent excercise.

    draw!

    k

I agree with Bumskee, you do have a line of action going through most of the quick poses but if you extend it all the way from head to toe it'll create a stronger pose.

Most of them feel balanced to me though which is a great thing!

oh, and watch the proportions on your faces...some of them are stretched out.

kyi_72: I've been taught a similar method @ my school...the lines we draw are the lines of the inside of the form and very rearely do we touch the contour (outside) with our lines. On top of that...our gestures are done as blindly as possible.

otherside: I've been drawing from all over the place... life, myself, books, photos. Anything I can lay my eye on. i'm trying to loosen my lines up, but I still keep petting. Must stop that!
Pootle: i think that loss of track is when I slack off a bit. Eep!
Space Marine: Ta! Thanks for stopping by!
kyi_72: Ah yes, i learnt that one at life drawing. I really should do it more and get back into the rhythm! Thanks for the booster, i'll try to do that more in future!!!

I've had a bit of a break, and now i'm back into the swing. Starting with some bridgman and life studies:

hey martin, good hands.. hands are good.. your lines are so much more confident with those hands.. esepcially the one on the top left, very strong movement and good lines, you should keep that going for your other stuff too. yeah I know it's easier said than done, Love the bridgman studies, reminds me I have to get back to it too!! hehe keep digging into them it will pay off shortly. cheers mate! btw how's ur challenge going?
