    Chief's struggle with art

    hi guys.

    after watching Bob Kato's DVDs i decided to start a series of head paintings. First monochromatic, then color.
    I made 65 monochromatic paintings in 4 weeks, and began with color some days ago. so here are a few of my better pieces.

    I enrolled in Rebecca Kimmels Anatomy Workshop over at CGTalk, so i will add drawings in october.

    Hope you'll like my exercises

    Sin City portraits (each about one hour)

    self portraits (mirror) each about 2 to 3 hours, some lines are too strong

    first colour studies, each about 1 hour, except last one

    there are a lot more, but these are the better ones.

    i'm going to do some more head studies from photographs, then i'll make up some.

    thx for your attention

    Oi: ....

    Damn.. Damn damn DAMN... I am very impressed, heh that I, ah, Im verging on speachless those are awsome. I guess doing 65 heads in a week would help out, that is truely amazing. The only coment I guess is on jessica alba's face. Her upper lip looks a little too large and flat. But I am dumbfounded Please do more.

    Wow El Chief your stuff is now no much better and u improved yourself in the last mouths a lot. I would say try to use more harder brushes.

    But e.g. Bruce Willis looks a bit out of proportion.

    @Azeira
    thx. i hope the workshop will wipe out my poor anatomy knowledge.

    @skureal
    thx. i thought about harder brushes and i have to try them soon. right now i'm using the airbrush-opacity-flow (hope that's right).
    besides: i like your drawings / way of shading.

    i like your execution. i just wished the material wasn't so recognizable and there was more going on other than just portraits. i'd suggest, taking your own photos and expanding the subject matter to incude studies on materials, backgrounds, for example. your handling of light/translucency is excellent.

    hi folks. i forgot to post these two latest portraits. The anatomy workshop is really time consuming, so i will start my drawings in middle of november.

    @antquin
    thx. i'll try to do different things in the future, but for now, anatomy and the human figure gets my full attention.

    Great great stuff man!

    The anatomy studies look very correct.
    Like them alot.

    I also like the Bratt Pitt one alot.
    How did those Bob Kato dvd's work out for you ? Thought about checking those out.
    Also wish I could have joined that cgtalk workshop, seemed very interesting.

    I'd like to see some more "unfamous" portraits to.

    cheers

    love the anatomy studies and the texture you've got on the bones is fantastic in the skeletal studies, the portraits are also very good although you do seem to have some issues with head length, this may be a fault of your ref or just the natural foreshortening of your eye if the ref is on a desk, say.

    @Hypronost
    thx. i really love the Kato DVDs, learned a bunch of new stuff through them. If you don't want ' em all, just buy the monochromatic one, i think it's the important one.

    @youngpaddy
    thx. the references for the heads are mainly screen captures, which are all out of proportion due to the other format (NTSC vs PAL), so i had to change them by hand. so perhaps that's the cause.

    @Azeira
    thx

    your self portraits are really nice! great use of values.
    color studies are looking good too!
    damn nice values on the sin city ones, but the likeness of the characters isn´t that great.
    i really like your skull studies as well! keep it comin!

    nice work. just a little tip: check your proportions before you start shading.
    proportions are the most important thing when it comes to drawing humans/oids.
    keep em coming!
