Beautiful work mate! Love the delicate lines. The tiny bit of rendering on the last one looked rad too. Italy is wicked, I do about 3 full days life drawing (structural and gestural), 1 day painting, and one day of comics. Only 5-6 weeks left though!
Hope the LARA is everything you had hoped for. Keep in touch dude.

I love finding good sketchbooks randomly. You have improved ten fold from the start of this sketchbook. Your line work is clean and accurate. Your traditional studies are good too, where do you study? Do you practice sight-size or comparitive measurement? Your imagination renderings are getting almost DanielC level. Thanks for posting.

no87:thanks man. yeh tube drawing is a pleasure, its tough, the jolting carriages and spontaneity add a kind of handicap that really pushes u to get as much as u can before the person buggers off, and i think it really helps ur longer drawings off the train
ben:fighting is right. its still an uphill struggle. sorry i missed u that one time u should come to the london ca meet in august, check the thread
sukh:yo...more drawings from u mister. watching ur sb like a hawk
brandon: you too mate...i want to see them studies
kyle: AND YOU. where are your updates? your illustrations lookin sweet my friend
p: i dont understand. theyre pencils?
johannes: haaa your a great guy, was a pleasure meeting u!
fumble: yeeaaah i fixed that cup later before i took the sketchbook to made actually..
surus: will do man. thanks for dropping byagain
lumographite: aw thanks
im keeping this sketchbook just as a reminder of the progress ive made, makes me a little nostalgic to go back to drawings from when i was 15. im at london atelier of representational art (drawpaintsculpt.com) its a new school, but the teachings incredible. one of the students (now a teacher) won the tad painting scholarship
http://www.luca.indraccolo.com/ his site
the school is taught in sight-size, it has its pros and cons but the results speak for themselves really, when u look at someone like lucas work or another tutor, valentina
http://www.drawpaintsculpt.com/wp-co...-lady-copy.jpg
i practise both sightsize and comparative. the atelier is taught in sight size
during day classes at the atelier but for evening classes and my own sketches i use comparative. sight-size is a means to an end, and makes it a lot easier for teachers to give u accurate critique, but obviously its impractical as an end goal. when doing sight size ill use it to establish key points and refer back to it when there's a problem, but a lot of the measurements i make will be comparative especially in figure drawing since the model moves, and all the points change.
thats a pretty big compliment about the rendering..its something im focusing on now since ive always been shite at it and its pretty fun. i know im nowhere near that level yet but...watch this space![]()
I would critique you but im just looking and learning. I love the little touches like the stickers on the armor/robotic body. Ive got to go do something now...
Man, your rendering is becoming tight as a dolphin's ass (waterproof)
Keep it up mate, I'll keep an eye on you![]()

The Spaniard's Sketchbook... No holds barred
thats cool about the school, i hadn't heard about it. I study with Jon Hardesty on Classicalartonline which as you also know won a TAD scholarship haha. I am just about to start casts, so i dont really have anything interesting to show yet hehe. A couple of the other students are painting now and it looks amazing, as long as you have the right instuction, it doesn't matter if it is over the internet or not. We practice comparative measurement. I agree with what you say about sight size, it is a means to an end. we do our first bargue and i believe our first cast sight size, after that it's all comparative which is great for problem solving skills. I wish i was able to get access to models like you! So lucky, i can go to figure sessions here about once a week, but i dont have any good instructors to give pointers on anything.
I've been lucky enough to look through DanC's book first hand so I'm not trying to boost your ego falsely. lol.

Wicked sketches man, your lines are really good. Really liking what I'm seeing! The progress is really awesome to see too, keep at it! Looking forward to seeing more stuff!![]()
Hi Sean!
Liking what I see as always the quality of line is good and generally proportions are tip top.
I know you're getting at rhythm and gesture with the painting of the lady boxer, but there's something strange about the connection of the upper leg to the pelvis (the whole tensor fasciae latae region). I think the block in was better and you fattened the thighs up a little too much. Nice to see you painting though.
And I really really like that alien robot with the stickers on it
jason: hey...share the love man. if uve got any suggestions...
quike: hahahah
lumographite: thats wicked, good luck w/ ur studies. i imagine the learning would be a bit different seeing as ur tutor cant lean over ur shoulder and critique ur interpretation of a certain angle, but itll be interesting to see how u develop . yeah im really lucky to have such regular access to a model, gotta make the most of it
piemonster: thanks dude , pop by again
andy: what can i say.. im a thigh (and bum)guy. hahaha. im not sure what u mean about it looking odd, if uve got any reference pics or somethin to clarify thatd be much appreciated. i expect there are a helluva lot of errors tho.
ok boys and girls. as i said before i fcked up my hand from drawing i think. rsi the doctor says, so i had to give it a rest and i ended up hurting the other hand from the same thing. but here is a motorbike i drew in the street with my left hand...didnt realise it was so hard
some random old dude who was sitting around. this one is with the right hand. its reeeaally dodgy but im feeling more able to draw with the right hand again

nice wrong mind drawings lol. Yeah I know what your saying about having a teacher over the shoulder. We update periodically before we proceed to each step so it works really well. We are talking about organizing a workshop as well so we can get that one on one time. keep it up! Do something more physical to keep your wrist/hands from wearing out on you. rock climbing is always a good one.

Boss, I've nothing else to say- even with a dodgy wrist ya still managed to continue drawing, and your ability to seamlessly switch between different rendering styles is just inspiring to see... you certainly gained the most from MADE after seeing the amount of drawings and info ya got and passed on to us. I really do think that you're gonna have like a massively insane growth rate once you transition into painting, itll be like totally effortless to you to adapt and surpass all previous expectations... gotta get yer autograph sometime
Thanks for the demo from the evening class and the merciless crits, shows how much i have to catch up and improve in observing correctly and actually paying attention to my line weight and seeing edges. Still struggling through your recommended exercise, but ill try and upload them sometime soon, hows your new drawing schedule coming along?
hope your hand recovers soon, another round of sketching is definitely in ordercatch ya soon, love ya bro (no homo)

lumographite: wrong hand! yeh the writing was done with that hand as well lol. not many cliff faces to climb in central london....
brandon: awwwwwwwww bubbawasnt expecting that. im not sure i deserve these, my renderings shite anyway, but if theres any way i can help u brah, im there
as for the drawing schedule, it went well today (first day) was productive. dont have a camera to upload the figure draiwngs i did this morning but here are some quick ecorche study things(crap) and my first attempt at enviro painting, using ref loosely. frustrating as fck but its a whole new challenge . if anyones got good links for enviro ref send it my way.... building up my library.
so as its my first one i thought id just try get used to photoshop tools. never really used a wide variety of brushes or the marquee tool for painting before. its fun experimenting a bit. i liked the temperature play from the cool sky to the warm stuff below. clearly i dont have a grip on it yet and theres not much composition to it, things i wana work on in future are textures and edges. crits always welcome ,on everything
i was listening to this while i painted it:

hands started hurting like a bitch again so might have to give it a rest for a couple of days. spent today central doing some more gallery browsing. never rly appreciated how lucky i am to have some of the best art in the world on my doorstep for free. hours spent perving on sargents, renoirs, rembrandts, turners, and a klimt! and so much more. fuck i just wana go back.. i wana live there.
also picked up some very good anatomy books. had bridgman, hogarth and loomis around me for years but this one in particular is very good. "atlas of human anatomy for the artist" by stephen rogers peck. really goes into the practical mechanics of the body and compares female and male anatomy and has a really useful index of terms at the front which makes bridgmans book understandable. so its a good investment
did another enviro study sketch this morning. learning more as i go along, sooo frustrating but so so rewarding. pyramids are also a good study , being big geometric shapes in strong light conditions that are also composed of much smaller subforms so u learn how lighting works on the small scale while still retaining the unity of the whole...
-need to stop being afraid of using small brushes.
-advice from void: try starting with a line drawing and adding shadows on a multiply layer when u get round to doing environments from imagination.

alot of this stuff isnt remotely recent, i just realised i hadnt uploaded it before. probably because i was embarrassed lol
girlfriend portrait, still cant draw her for shit but its the best ive done. likeness is there, the confidence isnt. but pretty girls have a habit of doing that to ya...

i thought i posted this already but for the sake of posterity TAKE IT EASY ON YOUR HANDS!
Hey man, really fantastic work here.
Knowing that you know my work bear in mind I should practice what I preach, yet I'll preach it anyway. Develop some of the characters you've begun to design, realise them a little further with a suggestion of colours, maybe a background and they'll become more alive. That way your confidence grows as when you realise them, and 'finish' them you'll be able to see how to improve them in order to 'finish' them again. Where do you find the inspiration for the basis of some of their costumes btw? I've always struggled with being creative when it comes finding something for my figures to wear or use/equip/hold etc.
Your life drawing continues to improve far beyond mine, there's no angle you seem to be afraid of? Which is great. Some really dynamic shapes as well. The ones peppering the A3 paper always interest me the most because that's where you make your mistakes, and thats the most important place for you and others to learn by seeing. A lot of it is still line work though. I can see you've approached it in a couple of pieces but if you throw down some basic tonal work loosely with a graphite stick as you continue to do these ones in particular you'll continue to build the form in your head, which will only help you when it comes to imagining your figures accurately.
Couple of sweet mechanical figure pieces here, which only adds to your visual vocabulary and expands your potential. On that idea, you've got some environmental pieces going on! I'm enjoying the mountain one in particular, there's some successful lighting on the far mountains, and your understanding of tonal and colour value (the darker the tone and bolder the colour = the suggestion of nearness to the foreground for example) is evident in this piece and the pyramid piece, texture is the next step. Consistent awareness of detail and focussing on particular areas should be considered. From experience I over work one area and completely drop from my mind other areas on landscapes in particular. Assessing a focal point/s in the compositions is one of the integral features to a successful landscape. However, it's too early to say that about your landscapes as they are only practices, and I'm sure those are aspects you're already aware of, but just reminders anyway. Also the colour pallette is great, some rich warm browns and some cool blues add to the quality of the piece, more natural. Couple more of those! Good to vary between landscapes, figures, architecture etc, keeps the mind active.
Hope some of that is useful. You're my competition. You expand. I expand. Keep working man, I'm looking forward to the art you produce in the coming months!
Sleep, that is something i struggle with constantly. And drawing someone your close to is definitely not easy. I can't remember which master was quoted saying it but it's something like you should never paint(draw) someone you know well becuase you will be more concerned with likeness than learning anything from it, that is of course if your goal is learning something from it. And pretty girls are intimidating to draw, if you get something in the proportion wrong it's all you think about instead of how to fix it.

jason- i know man. they aint so bad, it comes and goes
tom- i'm really shit at character design mate, cant draw from my head at all, but one thing ive learned from almost everyone i admire is never be afraid to use ref. ive told u this again and again..... but dont draw straight from ref. u need to add it to ur mental library so do some studies, find out how it works, look at ref and try draw it from memory a few times and then some.as long as u start out witha brief the concept should develop itself . i like what u say about the a3 and ill definately bust out sme graphite sticks cos of what uve said.
lumographite- ur totally right. im getting closer though, im gona try do an oil painting of her and then maybe show a retrospective of all her portraits
i did this awesome drawing i liked but i felt silly updating with just 1 drawing so i doodled some stupid generic army character to go with it,ignore him

awesome stuff man. i really love your life sketches. i keep coming back to the guys shoes at the top of post 393 mmm i do love a good shoe

The line work is great, you seem to have nailed the structure of the figure well. I'd certainly suggest painting more. Digitally painting objects has helped me learn a tonne.
Painting is almost like second gear, you can only get so far with a drawing in first gear. Painting can push things that much further, (I'm using this term quite loosley mind).
I know you are probally focusing much more on structure at the moment but i'd certainly mix up your learning, one helps the other.
Hope my ramblings made sense.

@ lumo - i think it was Sargent who said that.
