I second Blacky about russian masters.
I was in Moscow a few days ago, where I admired Repine's wonderful portraits, and his extremely alive group scenes.
Unfortunatly, those XIXth century russian masters are under-represented in our fuckin' snobish country of France...

Here are 2 examples of how subtle he can be, and how quick and essential he can be too... The great consistency of his painting seems to appear very early in his process.

Well, what got me going is some cartoon comics...

Guust Flater, in French Gaston Lagaffe or something like that was pretty inspirational for me. The artist Franquin was my god in those days, still is actually... He also made this one. When he was depressed and near the end of his life... It's called "blacklooking complete".

And then there was another discovery for me, named "Joe bar team"

Little do we know about "life"

    - Eigenfaces, computer generated metafaces that form a basis set for composing real faces, as used in facial recognition systems. Pretty creepy.

    - Rather nice storms that happened in perth.

    - The all knowing master.

    - Snail shell spider - the spider lives in the shell. very much COW material.

    - Field lines from the corona.

    - Nice watch, limited series. Done for the final fantasy movie, I am led to believe.

    - The Z-Machine discharging. Most powerful X-ray generator in the world. I mean holy crap.

    - Spaaaace! Well, low earth orbit.

The z-machine generator is used for inertial confinement fusion research, something similar to the equally creepy sounding Shiva Device.

Which looks like this on the outside:

And another favourite of mine: the inside of a tokamak reactor before and during use:

    Also, everyone likes stellarators!

    European Genre Painters

    Dan,

Great memories came flooding back when I saw your post for inspiration. This was one of my two favorite pieces in the Milwaukee Art Museum. I lived and taught there for about 6 years. Like any other painting, to really appreciate it, you have to see it for real. I hate using cliches when talking aout painting but beyond the masterful surface and use of paint this piece comes alive. I seriously wanted to touch and bite this painting every time that i saw it. I don't know that I have ever seen better skin tones. If there are magical pieces this is certainly one. The museum's whole 19th century European Genre collection is magnificent. My other favorite piece there was an Odd Nerdrum. I don't think that anyone else has posted him here. Simply genius and his works are huge. Also included the only piece for which I am actually planning a pilgrimage for - The Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eycks.

Sorolla is a master of light

This painting from Gisbert is daunting. And the fact that the historical fact happened at 500 meters from where I live makes it almost personal to me
