I think it's the skintones in your digitals that are throwing them off. They're not quite natural...Maybe too much local color and highlights.

Some really pretty drawings in here though!

Thank you kiwigarbage. I agree about my colors. As others have said, I tend to use colors "straight of the tube". The ones you have indicated are better are those I have paid attention and kept those crits in mind.

I think I found the "problem" (if it is a problem): you are so good with your lines that you depend too much on them.

It's a problem, pixel cheetah, if what I think your saying is, perhaps I don't practice color work often enough. Or perhaps I should just start painting without drawing. Rely only on the color itself.

I may have to try that.

I haven't posted since before the New Year. Very lame on my part.

So now that it's officially Spring, I am a little late here with my current "Winter Girl".

She was in a cafe in San Francisco on a cold afternoon last week. She found a place near the fireplace. Lucky her, a prime spot. Lucky me that I happened to be facing the right way while eating lunch with a friend. Here she is from memory.

The sequence of the girl in bed is Ludivine Sagnier, sketched based on freeze frames from her movie "The Swimming Pool".

A couple of WonderCon SF cosplay girls I sketched from photos I took. I'd say these two were most gorgeous of the cosplay girls at WonderCon SF this year. At least on Saturday when I was there cheering on my Maverix Studios friends that were exhibiting.

I did a little experiment with some photography of mine. Taken last weekend at the nearby waterfront, turned out a bit blurry, but for this purpose it's ok.

Based on the theory that a group of people in an image, the point where the horizon cuts through the body, each person in the group is cut through at approximately the same point. For instance, if the horizon line cuts across the neck of a person in the foreground, it will cut across the neck of the person in the distance. It depends on how tall each person is, and if the ground plain is consistently flat.

It's the same girl walking passed the camera. My digital painting is based on the approximate horizon in the scene, worked out some additional anatomy, skin tone and made my own seascape background.

Finally I found your SB! I remembered it from several years ago (2006 I think) when I was just looking around CA that time. Your SB was one of the most impresive and still is today.

I haven't been drawing from some long time, and I recently decided to resume again what for me is only a hobby; Made a new SB of my own and started to look for posts that I remembered as remarcable (one of them being your SB).

Hope you will not mind that I will be studying some of your work in order to improve mine (mainly facial expresions).

Otherwise you will get no crit from me, only wanted to say that I'm glad to re-enjoy scrolling through your SB.

Also hope you will find some time to stop by my SB, I could really use a tip or two.

Well, thank you dac. 2006? That was a while back, indeed. Using my work as inspiration is very flattering, but do your best to draw from life - that's the best medicine!

Took me forever to decide what to do with this piece since it was a line drawing last fall. Finally decided to color it up. Hope the palette works.

I aged the cement a little. It was too clean.

Everybody works a little differently I guess. I use pencil a lot to start a project. If I draw digitally, I use Sketchbook Pro and a Cintiq tablet. I paint in photoshop, I have CS3. Sometime I'll make custom brushes or I have downloaded some of these great brushes: http://chriswahlartbrushes.blogspot.com/

I typically start with a solid background color and build on that in layers, always keeping my line layer transparent as a top layer. If I work directly with color I typically start with the medium value and then shadows and highlights.

Sometimes I work in all gray scale first to get all my values and then use a color or overlay mode layer to add color on top:
