Spammers from INDIA will equal all of INDIA BANNED

thats right....Im tired of spending fifteen minutes every day banning spammers from India. Im sure getting clicks on your ads will give you a nickle or two but the result of doing so will be me banning all of india from being able to visit this site.

after tomorrow, if there is another spam from india its done.

I love indian food. I just hate indian spam.

    SPAM with curry...yum!

    Thank you, Jason!
Although it may be considered a "harsh" retribution, it is only when such actions are taken that the point is firmly driven home that SPAM is unwelcome, period.

Hopefully, such steps will also be taken towards the Russian and Chinese spammers as well. If enough forum admins would adopt this stance, oh, what a wonderful virtual world this would be!

That's like a fifth of the world's population you're banning there, isn't that a little... blunt?

But yeah, spam is totally gh3yzor. Isn't it possible to filter out topics with Ipod, free and gift certificate whatever? Might fool bots anyways. They think they posted a topic but didn't.

I'm fairly certain that girls form the middle east are the most attractive. They also need a btter name for their region, if there is one, I'd like to know.

Do we have many users in here from India, liek will it be affecting anyone?

Is there a way you make it so if someone from India wants to join, or rejoin after getting banned, you can manually let them through? Sucks you have to do this to get rid of SPAM. Maybe you could start a SPAM Forum, just for spammers to use

Maybe the registration process is a little too easy?

Perhaps if there was a short, easy questionare regarding the basic rules of the forum(you would choose one of a few premade answers so that the process could be automated rather that someone looking through each submission)when registering. I'd like to think this would discourage a fair amount of the spammer since they wouldn't want to bother actually reading the rules ect. Considering the current registration process only involves checking the "I have read the rules" button and making a name and password, I don't think it would be too exasperating to add a few(maybe 3-5)super easy questions-assuming you actually read the rules-to a one-time registration.

How about we steal CGtalks/CGsocietys idea? New users posts wont appear until they're approved by a mod for atleast the first 2-5 posts. During that time they can't start new threads. Only problem is it would create alot of work for Ponte and all the Mods. Perhaps it would be easier if new users could not start new threads untill they reached 5 posts or something, that way mods don't have an extra work load.

On the subject of Indian spam my family gets calls 3 or 4 times a day every 2nd day of the week from an Indian call centre asking if we want to change credit card companies or if we want to increase our credit limit and crap like that. This one time I actually got an Indian guy trying to impersonate an Australian accent. It was hilarious. Made him even harder to understand tho.

Yea Jason, I've gotta say thats a bit harsh sounding. Obviously not my choice or site, but still, thats like a billion people... Not to mention any Indian users already registered on the site...

I know the spam is annoying, but it doesnt happen horribly often, and there is almost always a mod browsing around. Is it so bad to just delete em when they pop up?

Or you could make a few new mods for the purpose of deleting spam

There has really only been a handful of sites that generate spam here, the problem is they do it over and over again. If their links won't work they will stop re-registering and posting.
We need a way to go after the link rather than worrying about the spammer.

Nice straw-man. I merely suggested that with such a large populace chances are that a hot girl is banned, and maybe, just maybe she was going to show me her panties... wait... do indians wear panties or do they have those loincloth things still?

    Ok.
I'm going to try to add something constructive to this.

In what way will banning India work
Banning the whole of India would take care of this since when a user account from India is banned for spamming, the user will create a new account from that geographical area.

In what way will banning India not work
People who create accounts for the sole purpose of spamming know they can be banned and probably don't care, since they can create new accounts. Wether or not there are non-spamming registered users from India is irrelevant. For the sake of this point, let's asume that there are. A general warning to Indian users, specifically aimed at the spammers, wont work because the spammers are unlikely to care about other users (non-spammers). Non-spammer users cannot do anything to prevent spammer users from posting. The only validity this warning would have is if the spammer users cared about creating other accounts (for spamming). Asuming that this is not the only site in which they spam or their only means of advertising, it likely that they actually dont care.

The India situation set aside, spammers can post from anywhere. If you block the entire of India, that doesn't mean spammers from other places in the world are blocked. If there are few spammers, they can be hand-picked (no filter needed or general block) to take care of the situation. Still, banning the whole of India won't put an end to spamming.

    Registration questions
This seems like the best option so far. I'm not sure an art quiz is the best option since many people come here to learn. Plus, a quiz that needs new answers every time it is taken seems better than a quiz with fixed answers. Maybe a questionare where you have to copy random generated words or numbers, but like 10 pages long. It would be extremly tedious, but for those who really want to join for the content of the site, it would be worth it, and for someone who just creates an account for advertising, its not. This is the best I could come up with, its nothing more than another brainstorming idea. Maybe someone could elaborate more on this or think of an alternative solution?

Anway, I hope that helped for something.

Seriously Jason, the need for a practical solution set aside, banning a whole area because a lot of users are spammers is simply unfair. It doesn't matter if there are non-spamming registered users from India or not. As a practical solution it may work (to a certain degree) but as a general policy, I don't think this is a good idea.

I think a temporary ban on India would be okay, but I think at least until you find another solution to handle the spam. I like the thing where new users can't post a topic until they maybe reply to a certain number of threads. Of course then we'd get SPAM in good threads. More admins would be good too. I'd volunteer my time for just SPAM bustin'. I spend a lot of time on this forum anyway. Perhaps there would be a way to have a button to alert an admin to SPAM, after about 3-4 different people mark it as SPAM, it would get sent to a SPAM section, or get a mark next to it alerting it as SPAM, to be reviewed by an admin. Another way to bust some of this is having more required fields when registering. If we ban all of India, then the terrorists (spammers) win! BTW, Happy Camper, you might check this out... https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx
We're on this and don't get those people bugging us anymore. Only when I have a problem with my ISP and try to call them do I talk to some dude in India.

    well,
seeing as no one from india has complained yet,
i am assuming our india CA population is fairly low.
    i think its pretty safe.
jason could always make exceptions for anyone overlooked.
particulary Seetharaman Narayanan when he joins!

    Seetharaman Narayanan. Hahaha, Dan

Yeah I can't get that name out of my head sometimes, its like having LSS, only there's no melody, rather a dry, tribal beat with a chunky Hooo-Haaa! in the end...damn PS.

On the problem at hand, a temporary ban doesn't seem so bad. If it fails to produce the results we were hoping then we can try the other options already mentioned. But its worth a shot. Nice things like diplomacy and fairness are totally lost on spammers.

This is a good point which I and seemingly everyone else forgot about.

Banning India is basically useless except in banning people who might actually want to join. Im sure spammers have proxies set up for this very possibility.
