    Hi,

I really like the French Quarter Design. I was immediately thinking of New Orleans when viewing the picture, even without reading your text. Reminds me of the movie Angel Heart (with Mickey Rourke & Robert DeNiro). You really captured the mood. Great work.
Do you use Photoshop or Painter?

    cheers!

I also did these yesterday. Redwood City has cool factories to draw and paint. It's kind of a pain because these huge trucks kick massive dirt clouds your way while you draw...All part of the experience; i guess. + 10 min pose.
Thanks Yodaah. I don't remember Angel Heart, maybe i'll go check it out. I'm a Bob Deniro fan.
It was photoshop. I've never used painter... sad huh?

wow.. ten min.. thats great... you have great lines... a real pro.. you can always tell that sort of thing by the amount of lines used... not always but, many times... someone who knows what they are doing will create a sketch using the minimal amount of lines but, they speak like full rendered drawings... that factory drawing is really great... keep on posting for us.. your artwork is very inspirational.

Yea, I love that 10 min sketch as well... and I agree with the comment above... I just spent over two hours drawing some crappy drawing in class that looks terrible and is no where near as completed as that. Think I'll just hang up my pencils now.

Wow that's some amazing stuff..is there any way to get the first page images to work? the first bunch of them don't work(bandwithd exceeded it says) but the ones on the second page do

Also thanks for those drawing notes and for the art of national geographic mention, I'll get that.

Sorry 'bout that photobucket exceeded bandwith thing. I don't know how i got that? Anyone know how to fix it if it happens again? As for now, I just moved all the pictures it to a new account. It was a PAIN!!!
madman: thanks, i fixed the first page i think. that book has great illustrations. There's not a lot of books packed with that many incredible reproductions. And B. Storey's notes are great too, it's my illustration bible.
mr blonde, mentler, zebzfree, emmdoubleew: thanks for the comments!
vigostar: thanks. honestly, length of poses don't really mean much. after my initial measurements, i'm basically simplifying and designing most of the time. the longer the pose, the worse the drawing gets (hence my constant simplification). And, if you analyze the planes, you can render the light coming from an "idealized" light source, so you don't even need the model anymore. sometimes you get lucky with great lighting so you don't have to edit much, but there's less analyzing involved...
I don't really trip off of minimal lines used as much as I used to. after all, if you use pencil, you can always erase it! i know i do. what your drawing communicates is more important than the technique. if it's a stiff drawing done with 1 line all the way around, it's still a stiff drawing. think about glen keane, that guy draws with tons "reverb" lines, but his drawings are unbelievably powerful!
rhythm over accuracy or accuracy over rhythm? i think about it all the time.

The word "spew" was never used more eloquently. I think I have to agree. I really like your loose style. Your sketches, especially the figures, flow nicely. A viewing pleasure.

    Hi chris,

don't get me wrong, I'm not bothered by not having been mentioned in your reply inspite of my comment on your design, but it would at least be nice if you could answer my question, so again like below: for the French Quarter pic, did you use Photoshop or painter ?

    cheers!

Chris- Thank you for that comment.. Its always very interesting to see an artists perspective... Rhythm over accuracy.. thats a very interesting thought and I can def. see how that would convey on paper better then the other way around.. I also have to admit that I had to look up who Glen Keane was..! Yes, I am probably the worst educated artist here.. its the main reason Im always telling newbies to educate themselves... in any event.. I also found it interesting when you mentioned the part about and "idealized light source". I would think that one would use the light source given in order to view different perspectives with the figure.. However, I can realize that an experienced artist would be more interested in form, structure and Rhythm as opposed to lighting... I didnt even realize that the first post was photoshop.. Very nice work.. As Im posting this comment to you I realized that you actually updated with some very nice work... I especially like the guy sitting with the kangol type hat and the messenger looking bag... excellent... nothing but praise... thanks for sharing...

Yoddah- if you read carefully chris answered your question

chris, i like the techincal aspect of your work, but it seems, overall, too architectural along the lines of engineering drawings, like you know all too well what you're doing, and what you're drawing is not discovery. fluidity/speed/skill may be getting in the way? just my opinion. you're very good at what you do.

    another wednesday figure drawing session.

antquin: thanks for your crit. "fluidity/speed/skill may be getting in the way?" doesn't sound like a bad thing. drawing to me doesn't always have to be discovery by the way. anything you draw from imagination is a combination of things you have observed before. drawing can be discovery, but you can discover things in your head before you draw it. then it becomes a matter of projecting the image in your head to the paper. you don't have to find it in the paper, although I do look at my scribbles to "discover" images and help access my visual memory/library. everyone has different procedures/criterias that they use to create/design, it's what makes all artists unique.

maxetormer: thanks! i'll try update frequently.

EmmDoubleEw: thank you. really study what that book teaches. if you get the basics down, then you will be able to do more complex things.

neoknocker, van, armando, moysturfurmer, madplanet, kittywolf13: thanks guys for visitting my sketchbook. i'm glad you like it.

vigostar: glenn keane is a very powerful disney animator. his sketches are so fluid and full of life, and he uses tons of search lines.
i am interested in lighting---but you can't light something unless you understand the structure and basic forms/planes. it also depends what the drawing is for---fine arts? a modeller? a scene lighter? showing off how something works? etc. thanks for the comments.

yodaah: hi, i answered your question under my granite factory drawing. photoshop.
and thanks to everyone for visitting and supporting my art. peace.

Im really jealous of your figure drawings In fact, I love those last few so much that Im gonna copy em into my sketchbook and see if i can't learn anything from the process. The way you shaded them is really interesting. I've never seen it done like that before... Anyways, thanks for sharing!

    Hey

I really love your stuff ! The piece with the spaceships attacking earth is a fun and strange one. Normally i wouldnt be in to those colors but somehow it works here. The feel of the pic is really well done. It conveys perfectly what you're trying to achieve , i think. Very dynamic !

Hello, chris ocampo. Your work is so powerful and beautiful. And you do it gracefully with any material. I'm deeply impressed. I absoltely love those studies! I guess your doin' these on the tablet? I don't know how you people get such accurate stuff form that thing. I can paint with it, barely, but I can't draw well with it. It slows me down! They look so loose! Ack. I'm still jealous. The environment with the ships and stuff is really great too. Love all the colors you've got in there. I really must figure out how to design vehicles and stuff. I'm clueless. Thanks for the post and help in my SB. Means a lot!
