Hey guys,

I'm going to the San Diego Comic Con this year and I'm gonna print up a mini-sketch book of some recent stuff. For the past few weeks I've been going home from work each night and sketching for like 4 hours. Here are some favs that I'm going to include.

From a small series of sketches that revolve around future world characters.
This one is some sort of retired captain.

Same series as above. This guy is a ship mechanic.

On the second page i've started this eyptian fable. I'm gonna produce a number of characters, enviros, scenes, storyboards, final paintings...the whole works.

Hey thanks for the comments guys,

Main Loop: No problem, be my guest. I've never had anyone want to color my stuff before...so, it's cool. I like what you did with it.

Here's just some more random stuff from the past few weeks.

This one is from a landscape drawing that I did when I was in Italy (up behind Assisi, if anyone wants to know) a few years back. I whipped out the old drawing, then redrew it with the castle in the foreground and the airship balloon.

just a quick concept drawing. I figure one of them is the muscle and the other is the brains.

Looks interesting.

Only crit: Superman/Kent looks more like Woody Allen than a titanium-chewing superhero.

ya know Johnny78, as soon as I posted that image it started looking really weird to me. (The Superman figure is drawn horribly) So I took your crit and tried to make him more to character. Kent is still "Woody Allen-ish" (I drew him a little beefier this time) but I tried to make Supes a little more heroic. I also fixed his "S" and I think the arms are a little too small still, but it's working a lot better now.

Yeah supes hands look a bit small too me.
But the other stuff is great, you have an impressive imagination to come out with such a range of stuff here!

Hey thanks Badger. I appreciate the compliment.

Here's just two more for the day. These were done in my actual sketchbook. Usually I draw on large sheets of tracing paper when I'm at home. (It's cheaper since I go through so many sheets, and it gives me a larger area to work on) I reserve my sketchbooks for traveling on the commuter train or when I'm not at home. The first one is recent. The guy sketch is about a year old now.

I think the new Superman looks a little bit better. Although you´re right with the face. Let´s say this Supi is from England

But I agree with badger about the hands.

Beautiful work! I really like your line, esp. on the twins and guy with the pipe.

The ogre studies catch my eye, you kept them loose, lots of movement in those. The motion study is a nice one.

nice work. it seems your material advances with every post. keep it up. this is promising stuff. i especially like the man with the pipe. you expect this fellow to be quite the writer, the way he looks through those damned glasses. you have a very good stlye, and i advise you to keep working and dont stop. also, iwant to see more landscapes from you. the one with the buildings and the park beneath the seiging robots is nice, and i think you have alot of potential in that regard.

Hey everyone,

wow...i hadn't realized that people were responding to my thread here after my last post. Thanks guys, i appreciate the comments.

I've been working on some stuff for the past month now, but nothing worthy of showing off here on conceptart. In the past week I had some inspiration to do my own versions of classic movie monters. They're not unique or different by any means, i just want to end up doing maybe 7 or 8 oil paintings based on each character. Dracula/ Vlad, the Mummy, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Medusa.

Here's some sketches for Medusa and the Lagoon Creature. They still need a lot of work before I go into finals mode (like I want Medusa to have a snake body) and I have the rest at home but I forgot them this morning.

I like the "old hag" look for the face in the 2nd sheet. Looks like she has more mouth lines or something. Thick-waisted snakes are a nice touch too!

The creature is great, love that mouth and the no-neck-jones approach.

Hi guys,

It was nice meeting up with everyone on Sunday. That museum was great...it's funny too, because i've been living in Boston for a year and a half and in MA all my life and i never knew it even existed. I'm definitely going back...i need to draw the Giant Sloth.

Trying to work out a pose and final drawing for Medusa. I'm going for something creepy, and snake-like and also sort of frozen. As you can also see, right now she has two tails...i'm not sure where exactly I want it placed, so I'm just experimenting.

Thanks for your feedback on my sketchbook thread. I thought I'd pass by yours and do the same.

I examined this thread and your website - it really seems like you're coming into your own style without aping somebody else, which is nice to see. Your strongest ability is to describe volume using line. It's reminiscent of Adam Hughes' approach. However, it looks like you have some trouble rendering the figure -- even though those pencil renderings aren't half bad.

Your traditional skills are strong. The next step? I would encourage you to pick up a wacom tablet and start playing in Photoshop. It provides an environment where you can better learn how to render something without destroying anything [that is, if you are even interested in doing that - the way your pieces assert their flatness is distinct and it works].

wow. thanks for the detailed crit Clay. thanks. I appreciate it.
My next step is to definitely get a walcom tablet and start doing some work digitally. I just need to save up a bit and get an actual computer first. If anything, i'm interested in it for the speed. It seems like you can work extremely fast and can experiment with ease. Working with oils, I'd really like to try new things & experiment more but it's often hard to do when your waiting for different layers to dry.

Yeah, Oils are really cool but take up so much time. Besides, it's not very romantic, but you can print out any work on to canvas now by taking it by Kinkos or by going to a company such as New Era Publishing.

Jason thanks for sharing them, good stuff.

I like the Medusa pose with the counter-angled arms, makes it more dynamic. I prefer the upper tail too.

The deer head is not as detailed as I remember it being. It think the small size doesn't do it justice, I seem to remember some real fine hatching linework. Good patience on that one!

Love the mummy, great pose and figurative-caricature treatment.

Also the wolfman frankly made me laugh. Reminded me unfortunately of a weird website I had a link of long ago where the guy painted animals as sex objects, with furry genitals and all, very weird stuff. Weird how associations creep in.
