I think the colors are working nicely in this. His head seems really crowded up at the top of the composition, though.

Cacodaemonia: Yeah...the over all composition I'm not too crazy about at all. I should have thought things thru more at the beginning. Thanks for checking it out.

    Artofinca: thanks!!!

Dan Valkar: Thanks for stopping by again. The cover to artgasm isn't really a sketchbook. It's a photo of an old antique book cover, which I retyped over it. I had a few printed up as a bound hardcover book. And I do plan on decorating Saladin more. That'll probably be the very last step...maybe as an overlay or something.

I'm doing an Age Progression of a character. Decided to go for Dracula and went for the oldest step first. Just trying to test the design out a bit. Not to sure on the body, but I dig the face.

The one above was really ugly and really didn't fit the character at all.

Here's something closer to the final design.

Hah, love these little guys. I think the skin tones look great, though the skin on the second one might be a little too transparent...?

Cacodaemonia: Ha...yeah..I think I lost a shadow layer or something. Just noticed that. Hmm, where did that layer go. Must've turned it off by mistake. thanks for stopping by.

    arsanik: Thanks man!

Update on Dracula: This is the oldest I'm going to do, now all I have to do is make the other 7 or so ages/steps.

lookin good, lookin good. revision is a MUUUUUCH better likeness in mood and character. only crit, it seems like some of your darks could use a bit more saturation, so as to pop the forms a little more. for example, between his chin and neck, between the two legs, both for more pop and separation. also, between the light of his forward thigh and the shadow of the knee. i think this would help describe form a little better. g'luck man, you're doing good things!

i like the way you add a little bit of red to the character's skin, and how you detail it good

perhaps just vary your poses more?

Dan Valkar: Baby Dracula indeed. It's coming, soon.

BlackDelphin: Yeah, you're definitely right. The next one I'll change it up a bit.

purb36: Thanks man. I'll keep what you said in mind and try it out.

    Cacodaemonia: Glad you like!

Took a break from Dracula and drew out Cyclops (my friend just drew up a sketch of him, and when I saw him I just had to do my own version.)

It's not done. I've got to go back in now and add in some textures and details. I really want to give him rough, scaled skin. And some scratches too.

Great progress! You're style seems more mature now; the inky quality is lovely. Perhaps some areas could be refined, imo--some scribbles could be merged into one line and other small details like that.

There seem to be some softer edges in your more recent work. It might not hurt to experiment and see where that goes.

Oh man, the shading on the face and eye are brilliant! This guy sis killing me - he's quite cute. I think around his groin/loincloth should be a bit darker.

YihyoungLi: Wow. Thank you for that really cool crit. I'm definitely trying to work on getting rid of some of the scribble motions. Trying.

Update on Cyclops. Pretty much done at this point. Way fun though.

Redrew the character. Initially in my mind, I was going to go for something more topdown and energetic. Something really action-oriented. But after drawing the pose about 8 times and trying to get the weight and balance just right, I think I automatically steered towards this.

I'll start painting it Friday, just need to reference some hand shots first. (I just got an awesome idea for a background too)

Cyclops came out great! What are you using him for?You could go even further with details, but I think it works well as is. Good variety of detailed areas and larger sections of color.

I think I like the 5th and 8th costume designs best. Is this guy a gladiator or something?

Cacodaemonia: Cyclops and pretty much everything else here is just for me...and my portfolio. The warrior up above is part of an older portfolio project I created that I'm going back to now. You can check him out way back on page 8 of this skbook. He's an old ancient warrior...stuck in the Egyptian Underworld.

    Pencil_Mage & Cacodaemonia: Thanks guys!

Update: Here's the value base. After staring at it for some time now, I realize that I've got to fix the back shoulder and arm - it goes way too far back in some sort of ... warped perspective. And I need to fix the hands a bit still.

And I think I want those walls a bit darker..so I'll probably add in some mood shadows

But I like where it's at. Now for colors!

UPDATE: Started painting. I'm painting from the bottom up so it's more completed as you go down. I need to fix the sword handle/hand, it's not lined up properly, and I need to alter that back shoulder/arm still.

Up next will be the rest of the body, the face, handle, hands, background.

I really like how this one is turning out. Any crits if ya have 'em!

Lookin nice! He's got a convincing sense of weight. Interesting design too; I really enjoy the progress of this one.

I think the floor looks vague, however; I'm not sure what to make of it, so some textures might help to establish whether it's mud, rock, etc. His right foot is kinda wobbly/broken. I'm sure you've flipped the image already, but maybe adjusting the foot so that it's angled outward. Also, I think some sharp highlights (esp. on his forehead and raised arm) could help, because the skin seems a bit flat right now.

A lot of your characters' skin are mottled/grey, as if they haven't been exposed to the sun very much. I like your inky illustrative style a lot; the atmosphere reminds me of "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad: somber, mysterious, "silence before the storm"-esque. However, I believe there could be more skin tone variety--more color variety actually. I'm not sure a weathered and desaturated skin color would work for a princess or child haha.

    Gogogogo!

YihyoungLi: Wow...you're, like, super generous with the crits. Thanks. I do know what you mean about the skin tones. For this one I do plan on going in now with more opagque highlights and cracks in his skin. And add in some veins and dirt and whatnot. I think with a lot of characters that I've done so far, it just calls for greyed out skin. (Dracual, maybe Cyclops, now this dude, who's a warrior in the Egyptian Underworld - so there's not a lot of sun there.) I guess it's time to do some other charcters now.

    Thanks man.

Oooh, gorgeous colors in those shadows! This is looking really great overall, and I love the armor and belt. Couple things:

There's this flat grey chunk of color on the left side (our left) of his face. Kill it!

The structure of his hands still needs a little work.

Last, what's up with his toes? Do they have black claws on them? His feet look really dark and freaky.

    Keep it up!
