Just a small update for tonight. A little landscape. I'm not really digging it that much. I think I need to find better, simpler shapes. I'm just sort of exploring as I go, and i think it's not really organic enough. I'm using the palate knife tool, along with chalk, blender, and charcoal. I tried dupliacted and flipping layers, playing with Layer Blending options...but...eh...I guess I just need to keep experimenting.

Jorge Gecov: Not sure when that'll happen...but soon.

    designboot: Glad you like.

Here's a Typical Giant of the Underworld. Roams the 4th Realm looking for fights. In the story, the 4th Realm is where all the Old Kings, Giants, warriors end up. Anyone who is taken before being Judged. It's a place of Lost Souls...sort of. It's a huge valley/plain area that is filled with different waring sections. The Giants are pretty much own their own, just fighting everyone.

    Hey all.

Just a simple sketch for tonight. It's a concept for a character called the Old King. He's forming an army and trying to find a way out of the Underworld. Rides a horse-like creature.

The Old King: In the 4th Realm, there are many differnt peoples roaming and living there. Mostly it's a place where warriors often find themselves ending up in. Essentially it's a wide open marsh detla plain. There are great battles going on, waring tribes, creatures, giants, a few left over Gods and lastly some of the Old Kings. Below is one of them. He rides a horse like beast (as seen above), rules the Southern area of the plain and wishes to rule the whole thing. The armor and sword he was burried with, have deteroriated over time and to make due, he's fashioned new armor out of the different beasts roaming there, namely scarab plating for this chest.

The anotomy is a little wonky...i'll need to fix it before painting.

    hey mr. snair ~

nice updates. :3 I like your colors a lot ! the one with the horse, yeesh the colors say something to me.

I have a random crit - all your hands/wrists look wonky! Study the wrist and hand, even if it is hella annoying. It will do your figures more justice and believability when they are holding things like weapons and/or just standing (hands can often give off a sense of a figure's personality) ~

naomiful: Thanks. Yeah...i'm seeing the whole wrist thing a bit now. hmm. I gotta keep an eye out for that when I'm drawing 'em.

    here's an update.
I wasn't really digging the sketch above so i reworked it. Here's 3 steps.
First: I used a beefier pencil this time and just scribbled until something appeared. Second. I layed my base, this time consisting of a dark orangey-brown (which i'v used on all of the Egyptian pieced, to be consistant). Third. I began painting some of the fun areas first, working from basic local colors to color details.

Thanks GoblinShark. It may be awhile before I go back and finish those two. It was more of a quick sketch type of thing. But, yeah, eventually i try to finish them.

Here's an update on The Old Pharaoh. All that's really left to do is his legs. I wanted to give the sense that his armor, shield and sword are really deteroriating. The guanlet is actually the ectoskeleton of one of those giant scarabs. So with that I'm trying to visually tell his back story; he's been here for ages, his armor is chipping away slowly, and he's killed many creatures here.

Little Enviro update today. This is where the Canyon gradually ends before giving way to marsh-like plains. In the story the main character is traveling down this river and as he finally comes out of the canyon, he looks behind, realizing theres no way back.

    Boky: Wow. Thank you.

Here's another enviro. I've been wanting to do a real epic landscape...but all my sketches so far have felt very unnatural, very unorganic, yeah know. But I think that this sketch may be alright, with some slight changes...so I'm gonna start painted tomorrow.

    Any thoughts?

I kind of lost my rythm that I had for the past few months. I got sick after Memorial Day and ever since I just haven't felt like drawing each night. Tried to do something productive today however.

Update: Below are some silhouettes for the Godess Ma'at. She is essentially justice in the underworld. Usually represented by an eagle or a hawk, she's literally the scales on which the dead are judged. If a person's heart weighs more than a single feather from Ma'at, they go to Heaven. If, however, her feather weighs more, that person goes to hell. I wanted to show her as pure, with some bird/feather like elements in her dress.

Second image is a drawing of Osiris on his throne. Pretty basic.

Jorge Gecov: Yeah...the story is constantly growing and expanding...so i get to come up with lots of different cool things to draw

    Tonight's Update:
Concept for Canyon Creatures. They essentially live in the tiny holes of the rock face, and chase after the main character. I wanted them to look sort of like birds, since they live in little caves in the wall, but without features. I dunno. It's not the most original concept. Tall, lanky stilt creatures have been done a lot.
And below that is Amemt the Devourer. He eats the damned...those who are judged not be worthy of heaven. In Egyptian mythology, he's a monster who has the head of a croc, the body of a hippo and the feet of a leopard. I wanted him to be this huge beast, and the 3 combo animal-hybrd just looked way to bizarre...so I kept him to just Croc-beast. I also encased him into rock..so as to show that even the Gods fear him and keep him caged.

    Hey man,
    great work in here.
Really like that last post. Both creatures are really cool
Also your colour in post #254 is quite cool - how you manage to tie in such saturated colours. And the palette too - kinda reminds me of someone, I think it might be Justin Sweet.
Anyways really good work. I think you could benefit from doing a more finished piece, or to do a reference study - master copy or something?

    But great work. Keep posting

Cavematty: Thanks for comments man. I guess if my stuff reminds you in any way to that of Justin Sweet...well, i'll definitely take that as a compliment. I totatlly agree that I need to do some finished pieces. So far I've just concetrated on characters, enviros. etc...but, yeah, i need to show some finished paints too.

    Update for tonight:
Redrew the barge a little. I may go ahead and paint this...not sure yet though.

And I decided to draw some animals...which I've neglected so far. I just grabbed some images from online, which I guess is cheating...but I really just wanted to draw something..anything.

Just a quick sketch for the day:

This is Apep, who is essentially the devil. He chases Ra throughout the Underworld and guards the 12th Hour. Every night Ra does battle with him and is reborn.

    Quicksketch: Thanks man

Started painting the sketch above. It happens towards the end of the story, when Setna goes up against Apep. Apep is usually depicted as a serpent or some other horrible creature and he sometimes has the ability to shapeshift. I wanted to go with the snake/dragon look, but also have a touch of centipede-shell-like armor. Anyways. I'm going to finish this one, because I really need to work on more epic action paintings. (Any crits?)

Really nice sketchbook. Your tablet drawings are really improving. Keep working hard. I would say when your digi painting make your brush larger, I see a lot of thin lines. In your recent post it seems you've increased your brush size. Keep up the good work!
