This was inspired by Rembrandt's "The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq" or what was once "Night Watch". I also decided to play a bit with smudge-ing the pencils on this one.

getting much better. the anatomy sketches show a lot of promise. try to stay away from doing short repetitive strokes when starting out in your drawings. work in very quick, long and continuous strokes to rough it in. the more you work on it the longer and shorter your pencil strokes should be. much improvement, keep working at it!

Thanks Apollo (You do know that your name means New Support, as in backing some one up, in Spanish) the short little pencil strokes is something that I've been trying to break myself out of. It's like a crutch because my hands aren't very steady. I'll work on it.

Here is a quick figure lighting study. Now Ref used on this one.

Definitely some interesting stuff going on right now, but i think perspective is a bit of a problem for you in a few of the pieces, such as the one with the people on the tennis court, they appear to be falling over because foreshortening hasn't been taken into account.

Also, your no ref stuff has a lot of promise, but your rendering skills need some work, also, you should start trying to define with value rather than simply lines, it will help you understand the decisions you make a lot more.

Thanks for the coment and crit Magic Man. I will take it and see if I can figure out what you ment be defining the figure in value and not line. I try to do that right now with some of the pencils by blocking in the figure with shading around it. But I think I know what you mean. I'll try to see if I can do a pure value study with out lines.

    here is todays little sketch.

    Wow

This has been a good page so far. comments from three of my favorite artist on the site.

What next will prostate sunrise stop by? maybe Andrew Ley?

Anyway yes fellah I know that MM's crit is very good I just have to find a way to put it to use. Thanks for stopping by It's appreciated.

Here is something I've been strugling with, as you can see for the past three days. I think that I'm finally getting the image I want. There is an open call for an RPG supliment that will have all of the procedes donated to the Katrina relief fund. What they whant is fantasy sprinked with Southern folk lore. I've chossen to do a Voodoo Drow. I know that Voodoo is very steriotipical but it's a subject that I know a bit about. Well I know a bit about Santeria which is related to Voodoo.

I could have sworn I commented in here once before...anyway; nice stuff going on here. I think MM is right (since he is the preverbial shit) and perspective seems to spite you a bit. You have some nicely designed guys in here, that jester is one of my favorites. I still think you could push them farther though. Also, work that fore-shortening a bit. Good technique and comp (as already said); keep working it out.

yea pug I am plagued by many problems. I think it be better to list what I have down. Photo ref that the only thing. I got a long way ahead of me but I'll just persevere through it. I also have to stop being so lazy. Ha

Any way I've been on the board for a few months and I just recently saw the massive black logo. well the name of my studio when I do establish it is going to be Gilded or Gilded Rooster. I've had the name now for about two years and did this logo for it then. now seeing the Massive logo I have logo envy. I have to rework mine.

I think I may have posted this already but Ill post it again.

I'm going to see if I rework it in the next few days.

When I was a kid The New Warriors was one of my favorite Comics so I've been thinking on using them as a redesign exercise. Here is the first of hopefully five Speedball sketches.

That's a scary looking self portrait, neat use of the lighting. I like the look of the jester, I think you should try and finish it.

    cheers

thanks nutter I needed that little break in posts. I might go back and try and finish the vamp one of these days. Yeah I didn't think the selfportrait would look so disturbing. I surprised even myself on that one.

quick sketch. Prismacolor and blue white mowhawk paper.
