    wtf is cthulhu!?!?

    Should be an easy question,
I see this thing everywhere nowadays,
    cthulhu artworks are allover conceptart.org
    and elsewhere as well

there are a few cthulhu video games coming out,
    and some card games..

it's like some sort of evil pokemon or something!

So can someone explain to me whats the deal?
I mean I guess it's a monster, with a bunch of evil disciples or something.
But I don't get why it's so damn popular...
    -Tad
'd like to thank god for all he's done in this work. all this art we enjoy and love he makes so beautiful. It really is one of the greatest gifts.

I wish there was some way to search the internet. You know, so I could just enter in what I was looking for and then it would show me more information...

    Luckily we have each other.

On a side note, if you travel around the back country of New England while reading Lovecraft, you will need several changes of shorts. While you may or may not find it creepy in the light of day in Phoenix, it is palpable when taken in context.

It's a creation of H.P Lovecraft, a horror write from the early part of last century. I would recommend picking up "The Best of H.P. Lovecraft." Its really good stuff. Cthulu is one of his more fantastical creations, but is a really good story.

I read it not long ago, and thought it was really good, but don't personally understand why that story in particular gets so much attention. I guess it was probably the first time we had some sort of anthropomorphic, multi tentacled god/beast thing (which, unfortunately, seems to be discredited by the fact that that type of thing is now so heavily associated with really bad 50's sci fi)

But Lovecraft is a really good write. Creepy as all hell....

My bad, SJ. Sarcasm sometimes grips me like an octopus helmet.

oracrest, I think it struck home at the time due to a) the writing, and b) not everyone was creating stories like this. It can still give the creeps; but with so much monster concept stuff over the last 80 years, jaded eyes might find it hum-drum. I've read some editors' remarks that Tolkien wouldn't be published if he were to have submitted his opus today.

    When i read Tad's question i cried a little.

Is there no love left in the world for 1910's psychotic tentacle monsters? Reading the books made me want to go see New England. Unfortunately, i had already sold my soul for my guitar.

    I'd have taken a ship.

Often overlooked is the fact that, in HP Lovecraft's storys Cthulhu is acutally part of a whole pantheon of other primodial gods and creatures...with equally awesome names like, Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, and Tsaggothua...I think the derivation of my username on here should be fairly obvious

    LOVECRAFT ROCKS!!
...although fans of lovecraft should also check out Robert Bloch, I believe he even wrote some Cthulhu Mythos storys.
Theres also a fairly heavy Lovecraft influence in Mignola's Hellboy.

I'd say you pronounce it pretty much the same way you'd read it. I've heard all kinds of crazy stuff, but in the books i think most of the mythologic talking is written down the way an american guy hears it. In one story if i remember correctly he even has the first person narrator describe the sounds and how he came to the words he wrote down.
I read some August Derleth stories, but didn't think they really came close to my image of the mythos. Don't know about Robert Bloch though. Stephen King wrote a pretty good short story based on Lovecraft. I think Hellboy is pretty good as it doesn't try to add to the existing stories but adds it's own twist.

I could write about Lovecraft all day.
(One of my favourite Simpsons quotes: "Vengeful god - loving god. Vengeful god - loooooving god. I could do this all day! And i just might. Vengeful god ...")

Hmmm...but i alays loved the Mythos more than the Creature...compared with other stories i thought "Call of Cthulhu" wasnt so great...."Dreamquest for Mount Kaddath" or some of the very short ones like "The Music of Erich Zann" surpass the story...in individualty and tension..."Call of Cthulhu" was (at least for me) to much "fantasy" and too less Horror...
