Plan B -- Prime Time Deliverance

Hello.

I'm a long time lurker who restarted drawing in 2007. Prior to that, the last time I drew was in highschool (see pic below with woman and fish) in a couple of pretty useless "art" classes where we made papier maché animals and construction paper mosaics.

My main focus up to now has been line and anatomy... both of which still need lots of work, but I'm also hoping to start learning value and colour soon.

Feedback and criticism would be much appreciated!

What I have done so far have been basically studies, all referenced. Here are some older studies done from anatomy books.

Recently got a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. Interesting tool. If anybody has any experience with it and would like to share some tips on how to work with it, that'd be fab.

Nice start. You're taking the right way to improve.
the overall is very good. But sometimes you're doing great and some (not often hopefully) are like drawn by another person. Perhaps because of your mood.
If i am right
Try to relax and forget anything about the world, about what you did in the morning or will do ... You're here with your subject , enjoy it and make lines (wich are looser after that)

if i'm wrong forget about it and do what you were doing. Nooo kidding !!! really
avoid crisp and short lines.

In your last post:
image1: good proportions, avoid inner lines faking anatomy (his right forearm) it will come later.
image2:very good lines ! feet,hands small
image3: good one (even the inner line is soft ) just make lines looser

Thanks for dropping by, zou! Yeah, I really need to be more spontaneous sometimes... and the hands and feet, I didn't even notice until you pointed it out! Have to be more careful with proportion from now on.

Those brush pens are fun aren't they? I got one a couple of months ago and I love it. Can't give you any tips though, all I can do is scribble around with it and hope for the best

You said you wanted to improve your lines and i think you'r on the right path, just try to keep away from chicken scratching and maybe do some blind contour drawings, they'r boring but they definitely help you to improve. Drawing big helps too, forces you to use your whole arm instead of only your hand. Keep at it!

Liz: Brush pens are great... they force you to plan out your drawing first, pay attention to the big shapes, and execute your plan quickly. It's a whole different way of working.

Imaginary: Thanks, man! I've done a few blind contours before, but didn't really get the point -- are they meant to make your line more confident?

Line and anatomy? good idea, that's what I'm focusing on too. But dont forget perspective. Drawing lots of 3d objects while paying attention to perspective is a good way to become more flexible when it comes to drawing peeps too! You have good lines and your understanding of anatomy seems mostly good too, but the stuff seems just a little flat-ish, in the non-intentional way.

So yeah my advice try thinking a little more in the third dimension.

Anyways, you asked me about colors in my thread, rite?
Hmm, I myself have mostly been focusing on lines and such...my lineart really bothers me. So I actually havent spent that much time researching colors. But here are a few tips. I dont know how many of these you are already aware of but this is what comes to mind:

Dont be afraid of the "dull" colors. Brown, gray, midtones - combined with just a little bit of a more potent color they can really make everything pop.

Dont use the same color value for highlights, midtones and shadows. Don't just shade with black and highlight with white.

Read a little bit about colors theory (just google color theory) and such. Some colors work well together. They accentuate each other - for example redish and greenish colors. Or a big low contrast area will make a little high contrast area a focus of attention. Anyways this comment is already too big, google that stuff!

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, you have some very nice gesture and motion drawings and your line work is really coming along brilliantly. As zou said your drawing style changes alot and most probably because of your mood, I find just looking at a picture before drawing it really helps A- clam and relax me and B- make me more aware of parts of the picture like shadows, lines etc that I didn't see before.
