wow...i went through your sketchbook,and i have seen such a dramatic change from your beginning to now.You have really developed,my only criticism is that it seems alot of your images seem kinda murky.Or its more like some of your tones are either a tad bit to bright or to dark.

do more oil paintings! those are awesome. you have a really unique style there.
These environment studies have nice colours, but they could use some sharper lines, it only takes a little bit extra work to do this, just grab a hard brush with full opacity and pick the sky colour (or other colour around the thing you want to sharpen) and outline it while constantly picking the right colour out of the background. Or, you can just make a few layers while you paint, one for the sky and one for the landmass. or you can do fore, mid and background depending on what suits the painting the most, as few as possible layers, can save you alot of work.
Or you can just switch to a harder brush and smooth out a bit at the end. I used to paint similiar to you with mainly a soft brush, for me it was a confidence thing, where I thought that if I used a soft brush I wouldnt make as many mistakes hehe...
The blurryiness makes my eyes water a bit because they have nothing to focus on.

Heya Tyler, its David from Marama...sorry I took so long to catch up with you. Seen any more Koalas in your back yard?
You've got a really good instinctive grasp of value composition (a good mix of high, low, and middle tones). Your line quality is also pretty good, but sometimes it slips a bit, especially when you're working from imagination. A few pages of gesture drawing (while working on keeping the overlapping and insertion of forms tight) every day might help with that.
Sargent study looks really good, Bouguereau is nice too, good colors, but it could use a lot more detail and rendering (Bouguereau has a lot to teach in those areas, as well as in the use of light and color).
Oil paints look pretty good...a bit sharper than your digital stuff.
Those sniper rifle thumbs are unforgiveable, man...gunmetal isn't playdough! In fact, that whole 'Misha the Sniper' concept is way too vague. It seriously deserves a re-work, just on general principles...you should be able to find plenty of source material to help you out.
In general you need to bear down much more on the details. These enviro thumbs and master studies are showing that you have a great grasp of color and composition, and a fine touch. I don't know what size you're working at on these paintings, but you might need to refine your brush technique. The bottom line is, tighten it up, bring the details into focus, introduce some hard lines and deeper contrast to direct the viewer's attention.
If you want to take a more impressionistic approach like Craig Mullins or even Greg Manchess or Sparth, all well and good, but remember that as a concept artist you need to be communicating, not just suggesting. Its really easy to get caught up in a pretty composition and be afraid to dig any deeper. Commit to pushing a painting much further, really spend some time on it.
