    high8 - Thanks! I'll work on that.

Today I was fighting with my tiredness and barely sketched something. Some still life from my room.

    Sci-fi interior.

First page of my pocket sketchbook. I sketched some woman reading magazine while going by train back from work.

    My crappy hand studies.

Nothin' crappy about those hand studies! Or anything else in this sketchbook for that matter -very impressive!

I noticed a page or two back you mentioned working on cloth folds - and had a number of suit drawings. Hogarth has a great book out there entirely dedicated to this - breaks them down into different categories and shows different patterns to look for in how fabric will lay across the body/limbs. Has helped me immensely in just the past month since I picked the book up, I highly recommend it!

madhatter106 - Thanks. I have this book but haven't tried studying from it yet.

Recently I decided to study other artists in order to explore my style. I took big pile of albums with different painters that I have at home and looked quickly what I like about some of them. At the end I wrote down about 7 artists and what I want to study from. It's going to be Rembrand, Rosinski, Beksinski about how they show the form and structure. Value from Millet and Honore Daumier beacause I like it a lot in their paintings. For colour it would be Sargent and Toulouse-Lautrec. Of course later there will be others but these are number one for me right now.

    Camille Corot painting study.

Millet value study. Not very succesful one. I might do it again.

Rembrandt drawing studies - I love how loosely he shows form.

Studying Rosinski again. He's polish comic artist.

    Sketching from photos.

My hand again. I tried to concetrate more than in the previous hand studies.

hey man, sorry I haven't stopped by here recently, getting caught up in a little schoolwork lately. great updates though, I really like the idea of exploring your style by studying a select group of artists. all the pen studies look great, especially the heads near the bottom of post 545, as well as the fashion studies from the most recent post (I really like the girl standing on one leg with her arms crossed). nice value study as well, though I do agree with glikster on the head (may have been like that in Millet's painting though; don't recognize this one off hand). nice loose, confident feel in all of these man... just keep up what you're doin!

glikster - Thanks man. To be honest, I didn't notice any improvement . Unfortuately the head was that little.
Onir - Thanks. I wanted to learn from old painters by copying their work quite early but never had enough will to do it. One of the Bobby Chiu's podcast finally convinced me to start doing this. I feel it's good beacause you can more clearly see in which direction you're going (or you want to go). Here are some of Millet's paintings that I'm using.

From my pocket sketchbook - girl reading newspaper (while going by train)

    Pack of hands.

Another value study from Millet's painting.

I gathered everything that I sketched since last update.

    Some old woman at train.

    My right hand.

Some cats concepts for 3d movie project that I recently joined - http://www.raashtramfilm.bo.pl. I used reference mainly for the poses.
You can see the same two cats but with ugly scars HERE. They're after many fights.

Frans Hals paintings studies. I concentrated mainly on value and rendering.

    designboot - thanks!

As you see I'm recently doing lot's of old masters studies. I like to draw stuff in one week series. Then I get bored and concentrate something else

    Hands again...I know, boring .

Practicing linear structure by drawing heads from old masters paintings and sculptures (took them all from Rebbeca Kimmel workshops on CGtalk) There are also few sketches of porcelain pig that I found at home.

hey Farvus, great updates! you've done alot lately it looks, very nice work all around. loving those master studies, the rendering looks great. very nice heads and hands as well; the construction of the heads is really nicely done, especially since you don't seem to be using many construction lines. the hands look great (are you left handed? didn't catch that until now if you are), love the loose quality of them. I'm liking the cats too very cool that you joined a movie project like that; not sure what it's about (couldn't understand the website) but I'm defintiely interested in what you're able to come up with. keep up the good work!

    EDIT: Yes, I'm left handed.

    Hands again

It's one year since I started my sketchbook and I still tend to have stiff contours and rendering in my imagination stuff. I really don't have idea what I can do about it. I consider working with charcoal or maybe some thick pencil beacause this way I couldn't get caught too early in detailing.

You have such a beautiful grasp on value. What sort of artists helped you understand value?

Leiana - Thanks! I wrote it somewhere next to the studies. Right now it's Jean-Francois Millet, Rembrandt van Rijn and recently Caravaggio
Jens - Thanks for advice. I noticed recently that I don't observe enough. Maybe Bargue drawing could force me to overcome this.

Head and master studies at the same time.

Recently I rediscovered and fell in love with charcoal technique. Here are few studies with compressed charcoal.

You do good value studies, Farvus, but I can't help but feel you're capable of more accurate forms in your line sketches.

With your faces, I feel they tend to be inbalanced, or just doesn't appear to properly resemble an actual face very well. Maybe you're sketching them a tad too fast?

With your hands it's much better because I can easily imagine what your references look like based on your sketch of their general forms (which I can't do very well with your faces). I reckon your hands can still benefit from tidier and more defined outlines though, because you're clearly capable of capturing the form of the hands.

hurricane - Thanks! It's actually one of my favourite drawings from Rembrandt.
    Lone wolf - Thanks!
JERI - Thanks for pointing this out. I recently have this feeling that I skip the measuring part too quickly.

Here are two new heads done with charcoal. I think that I'm doing too much studies and not enough imagination stuff.

    hey farvus~!

    good studies!

on the imaginative work, it looks like you have the same issue as me on this pic http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/9972/sk575od1.jpg. Head, no problem... torso, no problem... legs, hmm... what to do... what to do... heheh. Maybe use one of your fashion mag studies? Grab a friend and a digicam? Study one of marko's designs?

meanwhile, i'm still trying to figure out if i can do a vehicle tutorial or something based on your post on my thread. Not entirely sure which aspect to focus on.

hey Farvus, sorry I haven't replied lately.. been busy with school and stuff. great updates! these master studies are looking great; I'm especially liking http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/4232/sk577ok0.jpg and http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3011/sk584xq1.jpg . both have a great look and form to em. not much I can really crit on.. I think taking what you've learned with these and applying them to some portraits from your head would be a good exercise (figured I'd mention that since you said you thought you might be doing too many studies). otherwise just keep up the great work man!

machzero - Thanks! I rather have problems with arms. I usually don't know what position could I give them. As for vehicles tutorial. You can't teach experience in drawing specific kind of shapes. It's something that everybody has to figure out himself.
    glikster - Thanks.
designboot - Hehe. Creditsy powinny być skierowane do Caravaggia.
Onir - I think I'll continue doing master studies. There are still many things to learn.

    Two crappy enviroment thumbnails.

I decided to move out of my comfort zone and draw some machines, vehicles. These here are mainly small thumbnails with quick ideas. Just exploring different shapes.

All night doing master studies. Albrecht Durer has so difficult technique of hatching that my wrist started to hurt.

For Rebeccak Open Figure Drawing Workshop. Charcoal technique

I also started studying Bargue drawing to sharpen my observation skills and get some patience. It's too early stage to post something.

    designboot - Thanks.

More than vehicles I want to get deep into enviroments. Here's some experimenting both with traditional and digital media. I feel like I need to do those one hundret crappy enviros before really start doing something with nice style.

And digital. It's really difficult to make some interesting composition in square size image so next one will be last one of this type.
