I draw only with pen to increase my line confidence. It may look worse than pencil drawings but I hope I'll improve fast.

Wow, more people should comment in your sb, you got impressive work here. Sketching with a pen is a good idea, and daring. Those quick gesture drawings in your last post are looking good, will be interesting to see how they change the more you do them. Im really liking some of the lines as well.
These gesture drawing will highlight some of the weaker areas - like hands and feet. I find that really focusing on one area for a while can really help with this.
Your work from memory needs some more work. But I m sure you have picked up on that; like the face on the man you did in the recent post - his face looks a little too long - mainly the gap betweens is nose and mouth. Also, I just noticed that in you gestures you may need to focus more on the neck region.
Keep at it.

tullie - thanks. I have to work seriously on hands and feet. Neck studies is also a good idea
thirdeye - I'm starting to like normal pen. It's much better than fine point pen.
From photos. Bigger drawings this time.
Loose inspiration from Thorgal comics.
Some enviroment.

Nice improvement!
Thx for stoping by my sb
Dig your architectural scetches a lot, they are always interesting, have a neat composition and a cool style to them.
Was wondering if the musketierpicture from last page was going to get finished sometime, cuz its a nice subject.
I also like the way you captured torso of this guy. Keep em coming, would also like to see some architecural works taken to some more finished state.
So long...
blacky - thanks! I study architecture but from time to time I like to construct something without much thinking. Just mindless perspective doodle
I'm not going finish painting with musketeers but I might make new one...
I have lot's of crayons at home so I decided to make some use of them. Here's some enviroment.

Ok, great stuff in here!
Seriously sweet pen sketches...wow...
That kneeling guy in the 2nd to last post looks like he has a really long/large arm. I'm guessing a bodybuilder, but it still seems too long....
...and.....
The last crayon environment really doesn't seem to work. I think it's lacking a color harmony, if that's the right word for it.
wow, in this SSG, I'm way out of my league.
i disagree about the environ, it looks like something that'd be out of a children's fantasy book maybe. the colors do seem a bit random but with some more rendering it'd be nice.
the pen sketches are nice...watch some of the lengths of the limbs in your chars.

glikster - thanks for critique. You're right about the kneeling skull-man. I realised this quickly after I made the drawing. That happens when I choose too difficult pose.
As for crayon drawing. It was experiment but unsuccesful I think I used too much colours.
hpslashluvr - thanks. I will measure limbs more carefully.
I didn't have much time today but I wanted to draw something fast from imagination. I grabbed some sci-fi book and searched for interesting fragment. Here's some illustration for it.
30 mins. Ink over soft pencil. I used photo reference for the pose.

hey Farvus, I love what you've got here, seriously alot of this stuff blew me away. I'm a sucker for perspective and WOW you've got amazing ones! Your pen work is really nice and is improving with each go it seems, your newest one definitely show's that, very clean looking. Also that environment you made in crayon looks really nice imo, reminds me of Nausicaa for some reason; perhaps the shapes of stuff hehe. A crit I see is just watching your proportions on the anatomy; I definitely know it's hard and it's something we all need to watch for. Otherwise great stuff, keep em coming!![]()
hey farvus,
Your 200+ studies in less than a year is pretty damn impressive. Enjoying your isometric and perspective studies too. It's something I like to play with too (but my constructions lines are mostly digital nowadays, being in photoshop).
Plan to work on some finished pics combining stuff from your studies?
Ciao!
Here I am as promised...
Went through your whole SB and I see a lot of improvement in a year, which is raelly good! You have been busy and that is the only way to get anywhere, I know that but I don´t follow the rule myself HAH!
About your modelstudies... I enjoyed your inked ones on this page, they look nice and solid. Some stretching here and there but that is normal I guess. The problem I see (and I just might be totally wrong) is that sometimes the upper body and lower body are kinda separate... Maybe it is the order you work the picture or something like that. There seems to be lacking some kinda consistency in your sketches. Hmm. I have to have another look later.
About other work, the perspective studies were friggin´ nice!!! I want to learn to do that too! I think you should try to finish these magnificent enviros of yours! Work them up, color it in and finish ´em up! Would like to see that!
Summa summarum:
I think you have come a long way from when you started this, I appreciate that. Really a lot of improvement on many different areas, especially your ink work. I liked a lot of things in here, just keep doing it. I will surely keep on popping in!
Tschöö!
Wanted to pop in and say good job on that last quick pic.
Now you're branching into illustration! Sweet... good job, it tells a story (I like the planet visible through the window) although the mist/fire(?) is a little vague... I bet if it was facing the explanatory text there wouldn't be a problem.
Keep em coming!
This SSG is really helpful
Onir - Thanks. After your reply I realised that my crayon enviroment really looks like something underwater.
machzero - 200 studies is not enough for me. However I will try to put more finished pics in future updates. Thanks, man!
Hiipi - Wow. Thanks for long crit. I don't like to go back to my older works. I'll make some new digitally painted perspectives.
glikster - Thanks. I thought about the mist the same thing after looking at it on computer. It was too late so I left it alone.
About the explanation: It's a bit hard to explain. The man on the picture was captured by some scientific team. They are searching for a creature that is created of thoughts (it's not material) and the caputured man is their tool with which they are going to find it. He has telepathic abilities and in order not to get distracted by other people's thoughts, they taken him to space far from Earth (which is visible in the window). They ordered him to concentrate on that creature with help of meditation.
Here's some new update - another no ruler perspective. Not much beacause I have to learn for exams. It was supposed to have more painterly look but I decided to leave the inks uncovered so that it's more comic-like.
EDIT: I posted better version of this perspective. Thanks Onir!!!

hey man, nice updategreat job with the perspective on that, especially without a ruler or anything. Everything lines up really nicely, though some things are a little crooked if I had to be nit picky (not like I should talk though, this is a heck of a lot better than anything I could do WITH a ruler lol). I assume this was done traditionally? Either way I love the way it came out, especially the choice to leave it more comic like. Great stuff man, keep em comin!

sorry for not replying earlier!!!!
i love the previous illustration before this one....you should color it
about the building drawing...i hate perspective personally but i think you did a fair job on it...like said already maybe use a ruler to get more perfect lines but i like the shading job you did![]()

Onir - thanks. I looked at my perspective today and noticed that one line on the right has bad angle. I couldn't stand this mistake so I corrected it.
hpslahshluvr - I might make digital version of this illustration. As for using ruler... I might use ruler for finding mistakes beacause sometimes I don't see them on pencil stage.
I couldn't reply without any update so here are some morning doodles. I didn't care if they look perfect.

yo farvus!
just realised something that was bugging me regarding your most recent perspective piece. It's a 2 point perspective piece but the vanishing points don't end on the same horizon. All the lines on the building do share the same horizon, but the bridge doesn't, giving a slightly fisheye effect.
i like the looseness of your sketches. maybe work on your noses a little![]()

very cool "perspective" pic... in quotes because it loks more like a rough architectural render to me...
Cute doodles.. nice and loose...
See, I figured it was something like that (ethereal)... I'd also like to see it colored...
machzero - Well. It's a mistake but after while I thought that small fisheye effect could be desirable. After all we don't perceive perspective as totally flat. It's more like panoramic view in all directions. Thank's for pointing this out. I might use this trick for my future enviroments.
hpslashluvr - thanks. You're right about noses.
glikster - thanks. I might make digital painting from this illustration but don't have time for that today.
Sorry for very small update but I have recently lot's of work to do. I practiced drawing noses. These on the top are from Loomis. On the bottom are from here (you might don't know japanese but the description is unnecesary)
Last edited by Farvus; July 31st, 2011 at 11:30 AM.
woo-hoo! Noses! Something else that kicks my ass, every time...
Nice job, looking forward to more from you!
Yo Farvus,
Yeah, I noticed if make the vanishing points too far apart, the field of vision gets distorted at the "edges", giving a fish eye effect but it's wrong with straight perspective lines. Nowadays, I sketch first, eyeball it, then do the lines later. I got an idea of making photoshop generate a fisheye grid but haven't attempted it yet.
And good noses! Heh. I still try to get away with shadowed triangles (and not getting away with it).
nice noses! i really need to start doing those studies again...

oo very nice update man; I like those noses alot, lookin real good. very cool guide you found as well, I'll probably end up using that at some point as well lol. keep em comin!![]()
Hey Farvus, like your pen sketches man! They show progress as well, keep it up! I will try to get on ink as well, the results are wicked.

glikster - Thanks, man!
machzero - Good idea with the fisheye grid. It would be nice to see how you use this in your digital paintings.
hpslashluvr - Thanks. Practising drawing noses is pure pleasure.
Onir - Thanks.
jtheanswer - Thanks for comment. Drawing with ink is very relaxing to me. I use normal pen that is mainly for writing and it is very handy - Red Vector Standard
Here are some ink studies from photos.
I sketched quickly some imagination doodles. Both inspired by Moebius art.
