farvus! I'm so sorry I haven't stopped by here lately (been trying to get back into a groove of things, but school work has been piling up lately).. starting a new sketchbook eh? well lemme say you've progressed a whole lot within this thread; those value studies from a few posts ago are great and your pen sketches are amazing as always.

I'm hoping the SSG will spark back up sometime soon (you, hp, and machzero are the only ones who've posted more recently.. I'm trying to get back into things though!), but either way I'll be looking forward to the new book keep up the good work!

I really ought to do more studies like the one you're doing

Very solid foundations you're laying there (love the Seargent study), will check back for more.

    Farvus' exploration sketchbook vol. 2

    Sketchbook II thread
    (starts here)

I was drawing some doodles from photos all day and finally decided to make something from imagination. Two enviroments with completely different style. Second one is much quicker.

Great enviros! You handle the lighting quite instinctivly. Your backgrounds tend to wash into the middleground, though.

    Magnificient start!

~Faust - ...while I think that I'm lazy all the time . I'm still going to post some studies but once in a while when I get some good stuff.
Onir - Thanks! I guess people haven't got much time recently. We'll see...
    JERI - Thanks, man!

All the building sketches are cool. That looks like a great way to loosen up. The movie screenshots are poetry. I've tried severall times to do flat value studies like that, but I've never made it work. Looking at yours makes me want to try again.

~Faust~- Thanks. Actually blending background and middleground was my goal. I feel it gives more unity to space.

    yo farvus~!

just a last reply here before migrating to your new thread... heh

i'm trying to hunt down a copy of the older solaris movie, which is supposed to be more faithful to the book. Regardless, I'm a sucker for set designs in scifi movies.

also, similiar to your own reasons, haven't been posting much recently. Still sketch and doodle every night, but extra 15-30mins prepping, uploading, and posting takes up to much time... and it's not truly a finished work either.

see you on the new thread~!

Hey dude, nice to see you starting a new chapter in your art journey Enviros so far look great - especially the white corridor looks amazing. What I'm missing is a bit more accurancy and detailing - but I guess it'll come in time. Anyway - nice start, I'll be checking back to see how're you doing here. Keep up the good work.

    seth1 - Thanks, man.
hp - Too clean. You mean surfaces without texture? I'm going to experiment so I'll surely try different look.
designboot -I stopped with my project for a while but I'll continue soon. Don't need help right now but thanks.
thirdeye - Accuracy and detailing . That's will come with time I guess.

Here's some fun sci-fi pic. It's not extremely detailed but to be honest I don't like super matte-painting look and doodling with single pixel brush. Maybe in future

Hey beautiful compositions and feels with these sketches! Nice amounts of information -

Erp, noob question for yous - Any tips on starting an environment randomly? Is it like a natural progression over time and studying environments to go to imagination, or is there reference involved for the process? I'm kind of feeling around in the dark here so far lately

naomiful - Well. I used to just start from random marks with big brush and find some shapes in it. Right now I'm trying to be more conscious of what I'm trying to achieve. The results are not entirely succesful but there is some percent of likeness to my initial idea. I never expect to get 100% percent though. I always leave some space for searching for some interesting shapes that I put in the thumbnail (beacause these are usually unclear doodles). During this time I keep discovering lots of methods of how to develop my ideation process. When I have major shapes down, refining it later to something believable depends design skills and sometimes memory. I try to draw some wide range of architecture from photos every day. As for the reference. I sometimes look at some photo to get certain sense of scale. Like for example I want to draw some structure that feels as big as bunch of these buildings on reference so I look at how the scale of these buildings affect the whole photo composiotion. Reference might be also used for certain mood (like colours and light) but I haven't tried it yet. Still, lot's of things to learn. I feel I'm at the very beginning of this enviroment journey. Thanks for feedback.
Onir - Thanks. I recently don't think too much about perspective but it seems that it doesn't harm the drawing much.
designboot - Thanks for feedback and I really appreciate your willingness to help. I had very big ambitions about this project but right now I just do something for it when I'm in the right mood. It's super slow progress .

Ok. So here is some more experimental seedpainting. My drawing style for architecture is often very technical which prevents me from developing certain shapes so I decided to go for being more sketchy and organic. Weak values and composition although I like the cartoony quality of this one.

    EDIT: Corrected serious compositional mistake.

naomiful - wow. Thanks for the stars
    silvestri99 - Thanks.

There was no update recently but I was drawing all that time. I copied almost everything from the "Burn Hogarth - Dynamic anatomy" with ink technique. Not worth showing.

Here are all architecture notes that I made since 28th April though. These are all A4 pages scanned super small.

hey Farvus, the piece from a post ago is wonderful! love the colors and the composition; the little guy in there helps as well, gives it a nice scale. also fading to a more simplistic look gives it a really nice atmospheric effect. nothing to critique really, though out of personal preference I might want to see an object more in the foreground to help show the depth a bit, but it's definitely not a necessity. nice job on that one

to the present, these architectural drawings are stunning. great line quality and angles in all of em. really nothing to say other than that lol keep up the great work!

I was studying lots of clothes wrinkles from Burne Hogart's book. I also sketched from different reference to make my character designs more rich and believable. Mainly - helmets, medieval armours and weapons. Here's some random guy with gun.

    Sorry for long absence.

I recently do only finished stuff for my personal project and I wanted to wait with posting till I get lots of designs. Bigger pack will be later in FF section. Here are first three. I'm going to add some graphical element in the background to make it more interesting but I have no idea what could be good right now.

First one is some Insectoid race character. Second (on the right) is Mercenary archetype. Third is Knight archetype.
