Afternoon.

Here's some more along the lines of the Dragonfishers or Dragoneers. Loads more to do for this stuff, environments, characters, dragons and Da Vinci style flying machines! I'd like to develop some of these guys below into finished pieces, maybe next week, maybe next year!

Maybe I should stop with this whimsy stuff though, I need to do some of that hard SF stuff the kids love.... so much to do.....

really creative design! so what do you use to ink your lines? where do you usually grab your design influence/inspiration from? have you always used the 2 colored shading technique?

all of this stuff is very well thought out. great great great it would be awesome to see your stuff animated.

It's amazing what the word 'gothic' will do to me! Saw your work in the 3D section and chased you here. Fantastic drawings. So much character and life, they jump off the page. And no... stick with your world of whimsy! I love the historical costumed characters!

Oh yeah, that guy! I loved the whole mood and 18-19th century style of him when I first saw him. Looking good in 3D; the unusual proportions of his head enhance his inhuman/creep factor. I'm assuming it's for a game, will his head be viewable, or obscured by his hat and collar?

how much ref do you use? for example the pages of heads, animals and dragons: is it all straight from your mind or do you sit around with tons of cool ref in front of you as you doodle?

also, are the really busy pages made up by tracing lots of different sketches from different places? i.e. are the original pencils composited onto these pages from various different sources or do just trace up a whole page at a time on to tracing paper?

this sketchbook has shot straight into my top few faves. your work is joyful ! each page just has so much great stuff on it! looking forward to more!!

I use ref as a starting point for some of this stuff. I want to avoid drawing the same old pose again and again, or having only one particular way of drawing a nose etc. I don't think I'll ever be good enough to do without it to be honest. Obviously the dragons are straight out of the skull.

My blue line pages aren't as busy as the inked sheets, but occasionally the quick sketches will run into each other. On average, the inked pages are taken from 2-3 pencil sheets (+ any scraps I've doodled on).

Well I've started some sci-fi stuff, see you back here when It's done!

damn, I wish I had noticed you started a SB thread, I've been a fan since you first posted the alien fusileer a few months back.

now, a question about your process: I was messing with the loose colored pencil foundation -> fine line -> digital color finish technique for a while but I was finding that it was killing the spontaniety of the original sketch. How do you keep it fresh?

bwkeough, my roughs are pretty, well, rough at times, and my pencil line flows more than my scratchy wobbly, little ink line, so there are still plenty of choices for me to make with the line when it comes to the inking... hopefully these unknown choices help to keep some of the spontaneity.
