Hey Enthombed, nice progress on this sb so far. You should look up Loomis books online and do head studies to nail down the basics of facial structure, seems like youre occasionally struggling with them. You have some good ideas though dude, keep at it! Ciao.![]()
TUNAFISH SAMMICHES?!
Hey Icaro! Yo dude, I haven't been on CA in a while. I see you ressurected my sketchbook, lol. Anyway, I have suggestions for you. When I look at your drawings, I see no construction lines or gestural lines. Which tells me that you are not doing enough searching for lines. I don't mean your drawings should be more scribbly. Make as many marks as you must before you are happy with the underdrawing. I would encourage you to spend more time focused on line then rendering right now. Once you become more confident with line, I can tell that rendering will be a breeze for you. Try to make the drawing look great without tone first. Study Bridgeman, Hogarth, and the classical masters. I prefer bridgeman to Hogarth, but Hogarth has very good lessons as well. Try to draw 100 heads/hands/figures in a day. Don't draw them poorly just to get 100 in. Draw quickly and confidently. You'll discover that to do 100 a day, you'll have to completely disregard rendering. Rendering, unfortunately drains more energy from artists than necessary. Anyway, I wish the best for you and your wife. Stay in touch Icaro.
Eric

You've got a nice one, too.

i would like to see a series of the bug lady thing. try to do more of those. try to get better with doing a series and trying to incorporate new things. Its more rewarding when you do that, before you settle on a final design. XD
nice work here..
for the digitals i would suggest to work from ref. get yourself some good photos. you can learn a lot about light and shadow, shadings by doing that.
lets see some more
redraw the buglady again, but with lines, redraw it from skratch!
cheers

Hey man, nice to see you back. I think you should try to do more life drawings, specifically portraits- practice while someone is reading a book or watching TV, sleeping or talking on the phone.
Remember, from life! Generally, photos can teach you nothing that life can't tell you.

Try to get in a figure drawing class. See how Mr. Gist uses the pencil? Study how he uses line. He uses ellipses to see around the form. This helps the artist to see how the form turns in space. Focus on gesture. Final lines come after the searching part. Once all the proper proportions and distances are found.
Andrew Loomis was an illustrator during the 40's and 50's. Alot of his books are out of print. But I know there is a Loomis survival webpage out there somewhere. Buy his books. He knows his art.

Hope this helps. Loomis is a master. And can explain things alot better than I.![]()
