    April SPs

bit early i know but i have a bit of time here so i'm posting these in the hope that april will be more active than march was, that was a slooooow month. Not that i can complain, i am as guilty of not posting as anyone...

Photoshop doodle, i kind of lost interest and abandoned it..

Open canvas session where we decided to draw portraits, i should post the wpe in the OC thread, drawing with someone never gets old :-)

Sorry if this is against the rules posting so early.

    cheers

    Niall

Speed self portrait 60 minutes :)

I haven't posted here in a while...I had some extra time and tried an SP again..around 60 minutes in painter.

I love your top one Ni, the contrast of warm agains cool colors gives it a great feeling.

Meh.. I'll post more. I hate this one. The features came out good, but not the right measurements.

I like this one a bit better. Still some feature messies, but I tried to get a more defining light source (thanks Sula)

I like this one ALOT better. Time spent was 45 minutes. I tried not to sketch, but I kept doing it. I got the shadow down a bit better IMO.

    self portrait april first

Another speedy, around 90 minutes in oil.

    Pixeldragon:
If you don't mind my humble opinion :

What may help is not using outlines as much as you do. Of course I don't know what style you want to express but in my opinion this is what makes the drawings seem kind of flat. Try to think more in shapes rather than lines. Of course you can set up your basic shapes in lines but do it lightly and then use values to give them form.

Also, when shading try to follow the the direction of the shapes (like you did a bit on the neck in the second picture) because the strokes of your shading now kind of goe everywhere which is confusing. I'm noticing I didn't do this in my SP's everywhere either but it can really help viewers to understand the shapes of what you drew.

yet another slow month... i'll be back with gusto when i get this project out of the way...

Tjendol- very nice, good colours and structure and the likeness is there i think. i prefer the earlier one with the lighter colours, the latter one looks good but a bit dark.

pixeldragoon- the last one you posted is my favourite i think, with the best structure. try some loose contour drawing, and after a few they will likely give you one or two that you can work into. or try some tiny thumbnail sketches first, really fast and basic, i find those help me when i am working with pencil. keep posting though

Ion: Best work I've seen from you yet! I especially like the graphic look of the third and the color pallet of the fifth.

Stoph: Great values, and I love the lips and nose! However, the line you have between the lips and chin looks off... but it might just be an odd reference.

I should have some stuff up later today, hopefully.

Dementist - yeah its a weird reference (from above and to the right) and i have slightly more pronounced lip muscles (mostly cause of trumpet and a little bit of braces). meh, go figure im liking your traditional approach, its good to see someones not afraid of gettting their hands dirty

Checking in again. My absolute lack of art over the last few months is really getting to me. The itch is becoming insufferable.

A little scratch, but is far from soothed.
