Imy girlfriend & my book of sketches
Wotcha! Damn, it's been a while. I hit a real low patch with my drawing after coming back from the CA.org workshop which was extremely frustrating cos I was so motivated after Prague. But anyway, started to get back into my groove a few weeks back and now I'm loving drawing again. I think I expected to be able to do too much too soon. So I've gone back to basics and I feel like I'm learning and progressing at a steady rate.
Here's some stuff:
Recent quick-ish self portrait done in Photoshop CS with the square brush. About an hour and a half. Just blocked it in without much construction. It's a decent likeness so I'm pretty happy with it.
animated gif version.
Fruit study:
Been trying to loosen up with my gestures and drawing in general. I've started using Google image search to find actions etc. and then drawing from the thumbnails to try and keep things as simple and quick as possible. It's really good fun and great if you're stuck for things to draw.
30 sec - 2 min google gestures:
Quick anatomy sketches:
Anatomy stuff from my head. Trying to be a bit more structured in my learning of anatomy. Try to draw a figure from memory as best I can and then check with ref, noting areas where I've made mistakes/am unaware of an anatomical landmark. Still having to make a lot of notes!
Quick little page of warm up heads:
That's all for now. Hopefully the updates will be more frequent from now on. I want to do more concept work as well. Really need to find the right balance between learning/studying from ref and drawing from my own noggin. Hmmm...
Ta, Nick.

Super quick update...
brkofdon: Cheers, don! I appreciate you dropping by. Any chance of you updating your sketchbook soon?
Some thumbnails for a Shadow of the Colossus style megabeast:
I've started doodling on post-its with a cheap marker when I'm watching telly/on the phone etc. Good fun! Will do lots more of these:
Little space dude:
Non-ref anatomy bits:
Done a lot of these lately, won't post more cos they're boring to look at, but I feel like I'm starting to get a bit more of a handle on the figure now. Only in a couple of basic, static poses, mind. But it's a start...

yo nik, what up?
i really like the quick gestures youve been doing. keep up with them, and make sure that just as youre doing bunches of them from ref, do bunches of them without ref. its like cold water...taking the plunge is more of a shock than not, but you get used to it faster than easing yourself in. the post-it note pics look good, got a nice effect with the marker and the yellow paper. i also really like that you do a variety of heads...i would say, try varying up the expressions more. not only is it great practice, its fun too, and youll be killing 2 birds with one stone. warmup heads page, male head in the middle row on the right side, his eyes look off...check it out, note for next time. keep up the good work man; gambare!!

nice stuff- you should update more often.
No word man.Just no word.
everything here is looking mighty fine. I'm especially fond of your pencil drawings. Kinda like the way you keep em bright and crisp.
Sup bro!
Damn, wicked updates dude! I like em all!!!
I love all your construction lines, and little notes to yourself
Miss you guys, say hi to cakeypigdog 4 me. Hope to see you guys again one day, too fun

wow .. your anatomy is amazing ... good work![]()
Evenin' all!
Many thanks for the replies...
purb36: You're on point with all your crits. Especially about the gestures without reference. I definitely need to more of that. Started to do bits and pieces, but yeah need to do tons if I'm going to get a decent handle on the figure. Cheers again for stopping by.
Asoir: Ta! Post-its are fun!
newman: I'll try and update more often. I have a day job that keeps me pretty busy tho...heheh.
Ganbat-Bad: Thanks! Your stuff is wicked!
Placeboast: Ta!
csteingart: Aww, great to see you dropping by, fella! I have to make notes or I really don't process stuff. I think being really analytical and self-critical is really important for progressing as an artist. Really hope we can meet up again too! Me and Jake are talking about going to the next Euro workshop...
harikumar: my anatomy is nowhere yet, but I'm working at it...
Just a few odds and sods for now. Hopefully I'll get some more stuff up over the weekend.
Quick SP in watercolour with pencil underdrawing (had to do this one from a photo):
More Post-it fun times:
Punk guy at Tesco drawn from memory. Will try and do this more often to make those food shops a little more tolerable:
From the board in my kitchen:
Next time will be less underwhelming, I hope...

more?
Are you always so mean on your birthday? Just to let you know, the office is in a state of anarchy in your absence. Your desk is currently on fire... As for the SP, it's from a photo (like wot I said) and my head really is that shallow, you can check with calipers on monday.Originally Posted by newman

Lovely work and great studys. I like the pencil self portrait and those civil war pics the best.
Cheers for the replies!
Apocalypse Rex: Are you a Cgchatter as well? Ah, the memories... Cheers for stopping by!
Jarri: Many thanks. I should do more studies from those civil war pics. Need to try and memorise some of those unlikely facial features.
A few odds and sods for now.
I had a crack at this week's CHOW but didn't get past the linework stage. There were too many areas I was unhappy with so couldn't get motivated to paint it. Really shouldn't have just worked over an enlarged thumbnail... I enjoyed doing the thumbnails though.
I really need to start thinking about expression, clothing, character when drawing heads and stop just doodling these fookin baldies!
Filler doodle:

Thanks for all the kind words, folks!
Jarri: Cheers!
Alday.J: Many thanks! I'm really digging the stuff in your SB, too.
KeaL: I'm still slogging away at the anatomy. So much to learn.... I'll keep posting tho - ta!
Jho: Heh! Thanks!
Oki: Ta!
Jakeypigdog: You're too kind, my dear! Really liked your entry for that CHOW, particularly your rough sketch.
warlock1234: Yeah, I really agree about the lack of colour. I kind of still want to focus on linework until I feel really comfortable and loose with my drawing, but I am starting to do bits and pieces in colour. Need to do more tho, definitely.
tensai: Cheers, fella! Your cityscapes are awesome!
jtheanswer: Yeah, British summer time has officially started but you wouldn't know it. Ta!
Roight, just a few bits and pieces.
Quick Velazquez master copy of a dwarf in the Spanish court. Was trying to focus mainly on nailing colours rather than detail and accuracy. Face is fairly close tho:
quick noods and embarrassing bit of note to self:
I've started doodling with a ballpoint, which is a lot of fun, I can tell ya:
A bit of Zbrushery. Old geezer's head I worked on for a couple of hours. He will have a flat cap and ear hair if I can get around to finishing him:
That's all for now. More soon.
Cheers, Nick.
