    Cheers, folks!

    kidult: glad you like!

Hive_minD: If I thought I could go through a piece in a nicely structured way I would. Most of the time I'm fumbling in the dark. I feel a bit more confident with the character and ID stuff so I'll try and bear it in mind (and save my layers) for next time.

    jdeegz: Cheers!

    HunterKiller: Thanks very much!

Here's some stuff from the past week.

A couple of quick character designs. Silhouette -> cutting in -> highlights -> colour is a fun way to work:

Quick vehicle designs and I worked a couple up:

Still plugging away with the enviro stuff:

This was a perverted zbrush sculpt that became a slightly less perverted creature design. I call him 'The Lesser Spotted Scrote Bird'. Sorry.

    More soon,

    Ta, Nick.

Heh. Suggestiveness aside, I quite like the design of the bird. The bat ears give its head a silhouette that makes it much more appealing and offsets the, er, "other" aspects of its head shape.

You've got some great stuff in here. Your environments are getting better and better, and your z-brush stuff is top-notch. Keep it up!

ball sack bird for the win! great stuff carver. Its good to see you keep pushing forward on so many fronts. Like to see more traditional drawing stuff from you: i miss your little people doodles. Do you remember the joyous blue pencil period?

I love your sense of humor, that bird is so cool (and funny). The environments are really impressive and you are really getting a fell for distance and space. The Silhouette are stylish and again have a real feel of time or age to them if that makes any sense.

yoroshiku, oishiiniku! great job, as always. love the rendering on the bird, really great depiction. keep playing with composition, and trying out new things. in all three environments, you have an element on the right pointing diagonally to the focal point on the left. try to switch it up a bit, try out new and out of the box solutions to push what works, and see if you can come up with new ideas for the new problems that you'll face in an illustration. personally, i think the ship in the background of "flyby" could stand to be moved over, because right now the two ships pretty much point straight at each other, which traps the viewer on that line bouncing between the two. so maybe moving it over and on a slightly curved path so that it points to the other ship without being right in line with it, i think that might help out. hope this helps. you're doing really awesome man, and i love coming here and seeing all the new things you put up. keep pushing the limits man, cause you're improving in every stage. gambare!

Cheers as always for all the nice words, folks.

Senira: Yeah, it kind of looks like Yoda with a beak - most adorable! Thanks for stopping by.

    kidult: cheers!

    cw: Heh, thanks very much!

Hive_minD: Global economic meltdown aside, life is pretty good. I will put together some process stuff soon if you're still interested. Thanks as always, Chris.

oalexis: The enviros are improving little by little. The composition studies I've started doing will help things along as well, I hope. Cheers!

newman: cheers, Ben. They were most fun. I saw some photos of you at some filthy awards ceremony. Congrats, you award-winning pervert!

cakeypigdog: Just for you, Jake I doned a bunch of doodles. Thanks for the suggestion it's been fun getting into the ol' blue pencil again.

28chelseaslater: Glad you like 'em. Will try and do some more, I reckon.

Clochette: Thanks! Love you work, by the way. Super stylish it is.

Ashab: Hey, good to have you drop by, Ashab. Hope all is well with you, sir. Cheers!

purb36: Thanks for the crits, mate. They're really on point I reckon. Actually, your words have really motivated to start considering my compositions a lot more (it's often an afterthought, to be honest). Cheers for taking the time to offer your insight. It's much appreciated. Sankyuu!

    Here's this week's batch.

Got back into the pencils to shut Jake up:

Bought a fantastic book called Dream Worlds by Hans Bacher. It's a great how-to guide for, amongst other things, composing shots (in this case for animation but the guidelines are pretty universal). It inspired me to start doing these v. quick composition thumbnails. Going to do tons, I reckon:

I dug up the ostrich bike idea I had a while ago. Here's some thumbnail bits:

And worked a couple up. I like the first one but it's not that fitting for the vehicle. The second one lost it's dynamism in the transfer from thumbnail...

I'm trying to improve my hands. I thought sculpting something in zbrush might help with visualising them from different angles:

    More soon.

    Ta, Nick.

    sup

this stuff is illy, as usual. i really enjoy the environment thumbnails. The angle you chose to render the 2nd helmet on is questionable =D but its well rendered non the less. Ill be rending up there in skill level with you in some time, so watch out! haha

Everything is amazing. I like pencils most. The only crit
goes to the hand - it is not possible or at least not easy
to put the middle finger like that. The first part of the finger
    is bent way too much.

    Keep up the good work!

I really like the bottom left of the helmets, it goes against the grain will be a good contrast to the smooth lines of the bird bike. Gonna take a leaf out of you book and do some composition stuff seem to be fun and I bet you'll learn loads.
