New Stuff on the Bottom.

Hi everyone.

Been lurking for a long time now with few posts in-between, so I've finally decided to start posting regularly.
I am a highschool student here in Toronto, Canada, working towards a career in concept art/illustration. After looking through the sketchbook threads here, I've been inspired and have been making myself draw in my sketchbook for at least 90 minutes every day. This thread will hopefully motivate me to work faster and improve myself more.
Comments and critiques are most welcome!

Here's a quick dump of some of the recent work I've done in my sketchbook.

Self-Portrait

These next two were done using ink refill cartridges from my old inkjet printer




These two were inspired by Marko Djurdjevic




These ones were done using El Coro's technique. I didn't have access to alcohol-based ink, so I had to use water-based which ruined the grain

this one is another self-portrait, turned out skewed since I moved too much while drawing.

You seem to be progressing rather well, I recommend you just practice more anatomy/proportions. Everything seems good, nice and loose.

I was actually planning on doing a couple of studies based on some of the anatomy books I have, just as soon as a friend of mine returns them.

I don't think I'll have enough time to draw today, too many projects due next week, so I'll post some stuff from my life-drawing class that my teacher returned (she keeps most of our stuff until the end of the year for some reason )

That deformed skeleton actually looks really cool! Almost like a Gulf War Syndrome Baby's skeleton...

Good 30 second gestures, gestures are always a big help, along with drawing dime-sized figures! Really helps you to get the proportions right because at that size it's all proportion, no detail! Keep working hard on the portraits and anatomy studies, they're both coming along.

The only critique I had was that there are too many jagged and stray lines on your sketches. I did this too, but the way I got past it was to think about the lines and shapes, visualize them in my head, before I put them down on paper.

Keep it up and you've got an insanely strong start to your sketchbook!

Yeah, 30sec gestures and small studies are really helpful, I have a bunch more of them that I drew during some of my classes, I'll post them up once I actually find them.

And I agree with you on my linework, its something that I've trying to work on for a while. I'm planning on doing a couple of pages of sketches just in pen, that way I'm forced to get the correct lines and forms the first time.

I think I'll have some more work posted either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Didn't have a lot of time to draw yesterday, but I did do a couple of gouache and watercolour studies/sketches/experiments


This is a work in progress picture I'm working on for art class. I'm doing three in this series in Painter, then printing them as mini-posters.

very nice stuff !

but one thing i noticed is that you are very uneven in your art, the result can vary too much some times.. almost looks like 2 artists.. one suggestion would be maybe to think of tightening it up alittle bit ? 2 cents, take em or throw em away

I agree with you on the "uneven-ness" and looseness in my work. It's something I still have to work on.
My main problem right now is slowing down and taking my time with my work rather than trying to finish too fast and miss on the details.
I'm actually starting to do a couple of master study paintings for my history class, so maybe that will help me tighten up.

Another update, haven't had time to do any studies yet, too many due dates.
I did do some sketches, they'll do for now.


I'm going to come back to this one later to fix his anatomy and give him some armor or something.

No model in life drawing class today...So I drew some classmates and other doodles:



I have already started a couple of the aforementioned master studies, but I don't want to post them until they reach a semi-decent state.

Hey Sir Green Sock....I can notice a progression in your work. You're starting to notice proportion is vital and would be intersting to see where this would this would lead you in the next few months of sketching....keep it up

I'm glad you like the eye, its one of my favorite sketches here.
And you'll be seeing more master studies, since I have to do 5 more Madonna studies for history class.

Great Progress on the sketches. In terms of your colour studies I think they have a tendency to look very muddy and no gradation in tones. Keep up the good work

In terms of colour studies, I think you're right Draw. Working with colour is a problematic area for me. I plan on starting to play with oil and digital studies to improve on my colour work.

Wow, long time no update

Been in a bit of a creative slump and overwhelmed with schoolwork for a while, but I still managed to fill up an entire sketchbook since the last update.
Most of it is boring stuff while I was in the slump, I'll just post the stuff worth looking at and spare some bandwith
Thanks to everyone for the support and help to far, this community has really inspired me to work harder and improve. I've recently come out my slump, and drawing seems to be more fun than ever now. Lots more stuff to come, only 2.5 weeks of school left!!
