    C.Bell update, portrait tutorial - pg.2 -

3/16 Not sure why I'm still using this old thread. Might create a new one soon, new images on pg 2.

--> my server space is gone now, so some of the pics in this thread are down. Newer pics at the bottom and pg 2 should be working fine.

Really sweet figures and Bridgman studies! Those 2 eyes you drew look soo awesome! Really well rendered.

Everything looks really good, I can't belive you think it's crap!! Update at least like once a week, man! I like your updates and sketches... please?

Glad to see you made a new sketchbook!

I think you've got some pretty good stuff here. I love that self portrate on the pinkish page... and the two eyes are fantastic.

That pic of Beata is pretty good too... you should draw her face some more. :3

Whatup Nate, haven't seen you in awhile....glad to see your sketchbook, how could I have missed this!? Incredible stuff, since it's crit week, the only thing I can say really is to add a little bit more darker value to your pencil rendering (the portrait one)...other than that, shit your already kicking some major ass! Oh and what's up with Dave, is he doing good, haven't heard anything from him, shit man I miss that dude.

Soka thanks. I am trying hard to put lots of value variety into my pencils. I recently stepped on my scanner with my massive foot and totally hulk smashed it on accident. When I can afford a new one I'll update from my sketchbook. I dunno what happened to Dave, if I hear from him, will let you know.

    imagination....trying to figure it out...

    bad perspective... leg's all screwed.

ugh, my figures are falling into bad habbits. alright, then...more later!

I really like the first 25 pieces in this thread.. and then the american manga stuff starts and kind of leaves a bad aftertaste. Your sketchbook is really cool when you're working more from life. Your work looks more accomplished in that respect, where the manga stuff looks like it needs allot of work. either way, keep up the good work, and I hope to see you at sketch group next Saturday.

Especially the eye study. More like this please!

Undertow, I can't make it, I have to work late. I hear what you're saying though! The manga pics are oldies from a long time ago. The other one I dumped because the skin was green. I am rg color blind so I can't see it. thanks odds and xaya. I am doing lots of newsprint drawings right now. Will post some good ones up when I draw them hehe X__x

Small wip from another site, I was trying to help a fellow with a drawing of britney spears...well that's where the other pic came from, helping the same guy.

Every face looks different, but every face has a certain flexible
construction that is generally the same. It can vary quite a bit depending
    on the head.

It is not necessary to draw
the planes for every face or head you draw, but it must be understood
well, and it must be seen in your mind when drawing a face, so that you
can understand it's depth. Not all heads will have the same planes, but
the construction is generally the same for all humans. (obvious fat or
skinny people will look different in construction, and different races have
    differences).

I don't draw the planes normally when working, but britney's face is closer to this:

To replace reliance on the ball and line build-up, you have to start
filling your memory up with information about structure, anatomy and
balance. You have to practice proportions in shapes, and direction of
shapes in relation to another. When drawing from your mind, more is
going on, and you have to know a lot more. When copying from a photo
the first most important thing is shapes, and proportions before anything
    else.

there's how I start out. Measure the shapes, flip the image a few times,
don't move on until it matches at least somewhat.

after you have solid shapes in place and you are thinking about
construction and the dimensions...throw some more construction lines in
and start working on dark shadow spots, working your way up. Add detail
in last, and add the features of the face last.

    finish.

    new thingies...oooo exciting!

    thanks thanks.

Here are a some vanderpoel studies

These lay-ins have more construction in them than I'd recommend doing. More important to find the angles and proper proportions, I over did it so that maybe I could learn something from it.

...some issues still with imaginative work... I'd like more dynamic. Struggling to make the anatomy feel natural, the arm is wonky.

truly beautiful drawings of people... you inspire me to work harder - do you have any tips on beginning to work on faces? you seem to have quite a handle on them, yourself.

    The Bone Doctor is Watching!

Hey I got your chart ~~~~ you got it going on ~~~~ Eyes especially well done ~~~~ Bridgman just takes time ~~~~ I have drawn every one of his drawings at least twice and a lot of them 4 and 5 times done Vanderpoel as well but not as much ~~~ they are both part of a linage which I feel started with Hatton though Vanderpoel is a little more academic.

Anyway nice book here and I will check it out from here on out!

Thanks so much, everyone for comments!

Max, you got crazy shit going on yourself!
Mentler you've drawn 'em all twice or more? I'll do more then, bridgman's drawings have more construction in them, but Vanderpoel's writtings seem more insightful.
skrubbles dooood, I feel like such an ass! I haven't seen you in such a long time, I forgot your name---I'm bad with remembering names anyways! didn't mean it, love your sketchbook, update dammit!
bizarre--- you and me both. rg colorblindness always makes me feel unwelcome in color's world, I will work on it...

small proportion/angle problems are still lingering!! get off me get off!
