Nice BW studies, and i like the ones made from references... Do you use color-picker in photoshop when you paint from ref? It certainly looks like it, and you should avoid it You get a better sense of colors if you hand-pick each of them by yourself! Nice looking otherwise, looking forward to see more!

When I draw eyes from life or reference I always look at their shapes by basically viewing them as flat 2d shapes. I go into 3d mode when rendering. Also I look at the pupil as one dark shape of value, and I try to block that in with big strokes as opposed to drawing the outline of it.

Your SPs are looking good although I would put more emphasis on one eye by the lowering the value of the other one.

Hi zou . I would suggest you do some longer studies first. Don't limit yourself to one hour for your SP, but take some more time to get the rendering right. Another thing you do is to include some steps for us, so we can see how you progress while rendering.

sorry, internet connection was broken (but i practiced)

kingkostas: thanks for the advice, (i found the right method later when reading seegmiller)

Anthis: thank you mate for the big critic.I agree with the crisp strokes, i just didn't well (i had it in mind but failed ) It's like you entered my mind, i 'm looking to buy the zhang lu video (looking for somone who has credit card)
about the project, it's not mine, i just joined a team and finished now. If you're talking about the car, it was an exercice in school to give it a try.

Frank Gressie: thanks for the links, i found there others things that helps.

NoodleDoodle: ahhhh, of course i don't use color picker i would learn nothing doing so. i only use it to check a difficult guess. but thanks for commenting ....

Dizon: thanks for the critic on the portrait of my friend. and for encouraging. i never knew that i should lower one eye to emphasize the other. Is it because 3/4 view ? well i learnt something.

lyno: i 'm thinking the contrary would help better like many does here. speedpainting to learn more in less time. someone told me i'm weak on fast drawing. but i will do a longer study. thanks

those one are from last week, there some crappy studies i won't post.

    100 heads! Hell yeah!

I really like all your digital portraits too! I think each and every one of them look real good, and has it's own feel to it. Cool to see the sort of experiment with technique and style.

The 7th study is the best one I've seen from you. I think you really payed attention as to what parts are in light and shadow.

A common problem I see in your other studies is you make the eyes look flat. You have to think of the eyeball as a sphere even if you don't see most of it. A sphere that gets hit by light and has form shadows.

Look at the lower left eye in this picture( the one that is black and white): http://www.portraitprofessional.com/bits-good.jpg

The left side of the eye is lower in value because it's in shadow while the right side is much more lighter because it is receiving more light. What you do is that you make both sides have the same value. That's why it looks flat.

    I see this happening in studies :1, 4, 6, and 10.

The same is almost happening with your self portrait. Think of it like this:

You have ball A and ball B. The main light source is closest to ball A but farthest from ball B. So which ball is receiving relatively more light and which is receiving less?

The strength of the light starts to weaken as it travels long distances. The distance for the light to reach ball B is longer that's why it is receiving less light than ball A.

    Later!

    That's much better, dude!

I'm just a bit confused as to where the main light source is coming from. Is it from the right? Or from the top(overhead lighting)?

The cast shadow of the nose seems to be pointing downward so I guess it's overhead lighting. If that's the case, the eye sockets should almost be covered in shadow.

    thanks for stopping

something really odd happened to me, when blocking/in i thrown a dark gray in the middle of all those reddish tones. It appeared so green, i first thought the monitor need a good calibration (i thought it's tooo green to be that simultaneous color illusion that makes you see the complementary of the red in a gray) i passed 1HOUR recalibrating the lcd monitor and hating my mac for that. Then i opened the file in antoher computer to see the same greenish gray, it convinced me of the power of the simultaneous contrast !

the exercice of today, one real crappy/bizarre selfportrait.

It's cool that you keep making these self portraits. It's good practice although I find that it's easier to make someone else's portrait than mine. hehe

Just some crits. I've done this lighting before. In my experience the edges on the shadow side are much more softer they even blend with the other values on that side as well. I feel that you should have done the same with your portrait. Also that side is attracting attention because of the ear. Lower the value on that area. Remember it's in the shadow so it's not that noticeable as the parts that are in the light. You have to keep that relationship between light and shadow.

Also this portrait still suffers from the flat eye syndrome hehe. It just has something to do with the values. Try to pay more attention to that next time. Also I think you could soften the edge of the other eye. The one that's furthest from us to keep more attention to the other which happens to be the focal point of the portrait.

Look at this SP from Coro: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1246052915

Notice the edges of the parts that are in shadow especially the eyes. They are really soft. They almost blend in with other values. Even his hair almost blends with the background. Also notice how he painted his pupils. He wasn't painting an "eye", he was painting the shape of it! The same goes with EVERYTHING else like the eyebrows, lips, his beard and moustache, hair, ears etc. He only saw them as big and small shapes of color and value.

    Later!

    Nice mate.
I did some quick paintover in the last portrait.
No need to distract the viewers eye with a random enviro, better use something simple.
Just smoothen some parts added some flat shadows, and some saturated edges. If there was a light also from the left side i am sorry
And sorry for doing this without asking
And some variations to give you motivation for research

    see ya mate

I like the figure! Overall it's a good job.

Crits: The perspective of her feet in relation to the legs of the chair is off.

There is a patch of lighter color on her cheek that is sticking out. You could just remove that.
