    Flipnastywebby--thanks so much!
    Idiot Apathy--thanks. painting's what's next.
bumskee--yes, see what you are missing! Here's some more.
ashrumm--thanks, I'm glad you think so.
    AmontilladoAg--thank you!
MindCandyMan--thanks for stopping by, Jon. I'm really excited to start painting.
nethus--probably both. A lot of the original drawing lines still show and sometimes I add some if I think they work artistically.
Chromosome--thanks, I'm glad you like the values.
n1va--thanks! Yeah, perhaps so. I have some oil sketches. Does that count?
Stark--thanks so much. Your words make me feel like it was worth it.
Dr.Satan--thanks. I'm really glad you think it was handled well.
Yumiko--thanks so much for stopping by! I'm really glad it gave you such a smile and I hope to have more.
silvestri99--thanks. Yeah, I'm really enjoying it a lot.
seth1--thank you. I'm really glad you can see the improvement.
Jake Kobrin--hahaha, your comment made me laugh! thanks so much!
    LauraD--thanks!
PhilHolland--thanks so much. I've been enjoying your photos and trying to learn more about photography myself.

Ok, so I've started painting. These first few pics are studies I did on tracing paper. Tracing paper is a great surface to practice on. It's cheap, the oil paint doesn't soak through, and it's a really nice, smooth surface.
These were 20 min to an hour each.

This is the final piece. I think I spent three sessions on this, a few hours each session.

YES! I have some amazing sheets of tracing paper but I had no idea what to use it for, now I can finally practice some oil painting. Great stuff, Emily. I see great things for you in the future, hell right now it's looking superb, I'll definitely be back for updates.

tracing paper, thats genius. Thankyou for sharing, those paints are juicy, enjoying your studies very much

edit: with the tracing paper, did you stretch it onto some sort of board or something? or is it just on a pad of tracing paper? - and did you prime them with gesso? thanks

    maxetormer--thanks!
lilschecky--really? That's awesome. I really like his style.
MindCandyMan--exactly right! Yeah, the tracing paper is great for quick studies.
    Blaz--thank you!
    Call0ps--oh, thank you!
    Dabaers--thank so much.
Idiot Apathy--lol. Yeah, you should try it out.
Ellingsworth--thanks so much! you are too kind.
    Teh Gosu--thank you!
AlexC--I didn't stretch the tracing paper, I just left it on the pad and ripped the sheets off when I was done with them. I didn't have to gesso it, the paint doesn't soak through.
    MeTal-Mike--thanks so much.
dorian--sure thing! you're doing very nice work yourself.
patdzon--yeah, it's great for quick, easy studies.

Ok, so I did a painting of an apple.
This is my tracing paper study. You can see I was trying to work with broken color.

Here is the apple in progress. It's actually a different apple from the one in the study, so that's why the shape is different. I can't remember if this is after the 1st or 2nd session.
    Name: CRW_6945sm.jpg
Views: 4635

This is the finished piece. I did three sessions on this, with one more session where I re-worked the background.

Really nice renderings. I'm not sure if I like the 'rubbed-out' effect you have going for the darker shaded parts of your portraits
    but that's really nitpicky

Good work the paintings are delightful, keep up the good work I especially like the finished bread, way to pay attention to the subtlety of both the apple and the pair.

Love the paintings. You are really starting to take flight, can't wait for more! I remember you mentioned though that you would be doing a few cast drawings at some point.. are you still planning on those exercises? Not that diving right into paint is a bad thing, especially with such a great teacher!

I saw your work in the “main page gallery submissions and nominees” section and then browsed through this thread. Certainly you have some very strong studies here. I look forward to seeing your continued progress.

    Good luck,
