Nice work on those figures, Emily. Strong strong figures here. Excellent approach and execution of your lay-ins. And what a wonderful opportuntiy to learn from a master such as Whitaker. It's going to be a pleasure to see the results, since you have a fine start already.
P.S. I LOVE that purple dragon! So KIIUUTE!!

    Hi Emily
I was hoping you would start telling us what you are up to with your apprenticeship. Thanks, and remember no detail is too small for me to want to hear about
Good start to the Bargue, how's it looking now?

Really love those life drawings, how you can shade with a single stroke. I also like how you got so much information in your quicker poses.

Hey everybody, thank you for your nice comments!

j a k e, thank you very much! I love what you have been doing with your portraits.
Idiot Apathy, yep I hope to be updating on whatever I'm working on!
    sweetoblivion314, thank you, very kind.
AztcFireFlower, thanks! I'm glad you like the dragon!
Jason, thank you, that makes me happy.
Craig D, got an update for ya!
JoshuaTheJames, thank you very much. I love doing gesture drawings.
Bendragon, thank you, I really like hearing your opinion on my work.
seth1, yes that will be very exciting! I hope it's good!
Molly, so nice to hear from you! Thank you!

Ok guys, this assignment has been harder than I thought it would be. It's very easy to draw something and think you're right on and your drawing is looking great, but then you measure it and find out you're off!

I spent a lot of time erasing and re-measuring on this. I even had to erase a whole section because I found I had made a measuring mistake!
You can see that I added some vertical and horizontal lines to help with the measuring.

I adjusted the levels on this to make it a little easier to see the drawing.

Looking good Emily! Seems spot on to my (untrained) eye, and photoshops
I know this sort of thing seems so painful and such a round-a-bout way to draw something but I really do think it pays off.

I remember drawing a group of boxes, just boxes and measuring every angle, drawing and redrawing. Must have taken 3 or more hours for such a simple thing haha, but it really taught me so much. Then I did it again @_@.

    Hey Emily,

Man, this technique I have NOT approached yet. The 1st years in my school are doing this every Friday. Its taken my school forever to get a tutor in who understands the benefits of such an exercise...I'm gonna have to get on it eh?

Idiot Apathy: heheh, yeah it's a difficult exercise, but I think I'm learning a lot.
Flask Post: Thanks! I'm glad you like the figure drawing.
j a k e: Thank you jake! Nice to see you.
Molly: yeah, you should do it too!

Ok, first day at Bill Whitaker's studio today. Bill took some pictures so you can see what I'm doing.
I got there at 10:00 am and left at 5:00 pm when we started to lose the light.

I'll explain the light first. Bill has a large studio with a high ceiling. The north wall is full of windows, two rows. If I remember correctly, the blinds were shut on the lower windows and open on the upper windows. The natural sunlight that comes through is very white and clear, not harsh at all, and is very easy to work under.

Here is my drawing in the early part of the day. I have lightly blocked in the shadows and am slowly going over them, darkening and refining.

This is how Bill has me holding my pencil. This is so I can use the side of the pencil to shade, as well as being a little easier on the hand and wrist.

These are great shots, Emily. That lighting looks fantastic (I'm usually stuck with the hard yellow kind), and the drawing is coming along sweetly.

fooxoo, thank you! Yeah, I will slowly be darkening the shadows as I go over them again.
j a k e, thanks. Yes, it is very nice to work at! A dream studio space.
Idiot Apathy, thanks Tom. Don't get too jealous.
Craig D, thanks, I'm glad you like the info about the methods.
Texahol, good eye! I have some stuff to fix in that area.
0kelvin, it certainly is good training in patience! thanks.
dogfood, thank you. The lighting is very nice, much easier to work under than my pitiful light at home.
David Kassan, thanks, here you go.

A small update. I worked mostly on the upper hair area today, so you can see a little of the (slow) progress.
