0kelvin's Cleverly Named Sketchbook (Now with nude pictures of YOU!)

I finally got a bunch of the sketches I did in San Francisco scanned, so I thought I'd start a sketchbook to post them. Hopefully it will keep me motivated to keep on drawing as well. Plus, all the cool kids are doing it.



I drew this one on the plane. I don't know what it is, but it looks like an illustration out of a prehistoric Charlotte's Web.


The roomies and I had a mini-Thunderdome in our room the first night. The topic was The Elusive North-Floridian Skunk Ape. I think ChromaticCodex won, for the sole fact that his had a magic wand.

Wow, I can't believe I drew his hand on backwards. That's downright embarassing.


We then headed over to the Galleria where we had a few more Thunderdomes. The first was Robot Buddha. Mine was an Enlightenment vending machine.


And then we did Zombie Jesus. I drew him cartoony because it's less blasphemous that way. I think I read that somewhere. Probably the Bible.


It's a guy in a tree. I'm not too happy with it, but my goal was to draw something that took up the entire page, and I did just that.


I drew the head of this guy and was planning on giving him long flowing regal robes, but then I realised how incredibly cliche he was going to look so I just went in the completely opposite direction and gave him this bent over naked body with screwed up anatomy. Much creepier, if you ask me.


I mostly just love trying to imagine how this guy would sound when he talks.


Another Thunderdome we did. The topic for this one was Fabulously Gay Santa. The tall handsome lad is Mrs. Claus.


Canadian cyclops, perhaps?


Hehehe. This was originally a drawing of Pac-Man but apparently somebody got a hold of my sketchbook and added the -LEY. I think they're trying to imply Jason Manley has a big smile or something.


A creature that I just realised must have been subconsciously inspired by the chairs in the Triton lobby.


Drawn just minutes before the infamous Insect Battle extravaganza started.


This is a sketch for my Angel Thunderdome entry. Unfortunately that's as far as it got.


This is a life drawing of three or four people in one done on the last night there.

yo man, good stuff. But you seem to have an outline over everything you do. But anyways good work, keep it up.

Here are a couple things I've done since I got back.


I did this right after I got home to try out a few of the many things I picked up at the workshop. I need some practice with many of the techniques, but can definitely see them helping. I also used shapes and value to block it in rather than lines, which is something I need to do more often.


I sketched this while watching some Anchorman special features. I touched it up in Photoshop, mainly due to my scanner having a personal vendetta against pencils.

Just some more practice painting. I like eyes. This was done from reference.


Just some creature thumbnails. I haven't modelled anything in a while and I'm trying to come up with a creature to model and texture for my portfolio. Nothing here really jumps out at me, but I'm getting some vague ideas of the direction I want to go.

Maybe I should tell people I hate drawing. That would get me some replies.

Here are a few very quick digital sketches.


I liked one of those thumbnails after all. I'm going to do some more sketches of variations this guy and if I come up with something I like I'll model him in Maya.


Here was another idea I had for a creature to model. It got a little cliche for my tastes so I dropped the idea. I might revisit it if I can come up with an original angle.

I don't know where this came from. I just started making shapes and doodling and then before I knew it this guy was sitting in front of me. Literally. I asked him to move out of the way so I could see the screen and he went and sat on my bed. I shyly asked if I could draw him. After I finished this picture, we made out for like half an hour. He tasted like fresh raspberries.

Hehe, seriously though, some cool stuff here. What's all this talk of modelling? Do you normally do a lot of 3d stuff? Post some up, yo!

Watch your proportions...in that last one, his near arm looks longer than his far one, and his far leg looks longer and thinner than his near one.

I haven't done much modelling in a while. Gotta get back into it. You can see a bunch of my 3D stuff on my website. Here in case you're too lazy to scroll all the way down to my sig. Texturing is mainly where I want to focus, but if I'm gonna texture something I might as well model it as well. Diversify!

Yeah, you're right about the proportions. Although his far leg only looks longer because he's dragging his foot. I think it might actually be shorter. You can't really tell because it gets lost in the shadow, though.

He does have a mouth, it's just not on his face.


I knew that story would get me a reply.

Just working on my so often neglected figure study. I'm actually quite happy with it, so that can only mean one thing: I'm not good enough to notice all my mistakes yet!

I actually had fun with this, so hopefully that will motivate me to do it more often. I usually get bored so fast with figure studies.

I like the figure study you did, especially her face! And your wasp battles are way more finished than mine, I'm sure you have me beat. Can't wait to see your t-dome sketches!

Oh yeah, and Pac-Manley is awesome. So's the guy with machine gun eyes, that was crazy. Who did the guy with chainsaws for eyes, was that Alberto?

I totally forgot about the guy with the chainsaw eyes! That was awesome. I think it was Alberto who did him.


A page of rough Thunderdome sketches. I drew them pretty light so the scanner didn't pick some of them up very well.


Another Thunderdome sketch. I just realised way too much of my art these days is insect-themed.

I chose which head I'm going with, now I need to design a body and clothing and such. I should stop typing and go do that now.

Haven't updated this in a while.

I didn't have anything to do at work yesterday, so I sat around drawing all day long. Here's what I drew!


Just a little critter. Despite the fact he has no neck, I still managed to give him a wattle.


I do love drawing pupilless eyes and humongous lips for some reason.


If nothing else, the workshop inspired me to draw creatures with lots and lots of genitalia.


There's really nothing of interest to say about this picture!


Would ya look at the size of that guy's head!! It's like an orange on a toothpick! I'm not kidding, it's like Sputnik! Spherical but pointy at parts!

He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.


A bunch of wierd creatures. I call them (from top left to bottom right) Upside-down Head, Stupid Blade-Horn Face, Tusk Slug, Sentient Onion Ring and Kickass Eye-mouth Guy.


In other news, after two months of not getting paid, I was finally laid off work today! I was actually planning on quitting today anyway, so it all worked out. I just hope I get my money soon.

Started this but got bored and didn't finish. Perhaps some other time, Sniper creature guy.


A robot! I was in the mood for some stark black on white action.

I'm seeing some improvement in getting more interesting shapes and poses out of my characters. They're still too static, but I'm getting there!

A sketch of one of the creatures for this week's COW. Gonna really spend more time in the planning stages for this one. Last week with the bird I just winged it (no pun intended). I like this design, but I'm gonna explore a bit more and see what else I can come up with.

It's amazing to see how different your paper work is from your digital. I personally suck at both, but when you get digital your skill exploades. Not saying your bad on paper ior anything, but damn.

I love some of your smaller sketches! They have a nice outline and personality, especially the zombie, the alien on the very bottom near the left, the long-legged robot guy and the guy with the huge butt. Fun characters. On some of your work the perspective seems a little off, like on the two digital sketches above your paper stuff. The alligator/sloth looking guy's arms are sort of hard to read, like whether the elbow is pointing in or out, and his left nostril I don't think should be that visible. The mammoth guy under him seems rather unsteady, like he's about to topple over onto his right side. Maybe if you move the position of the right foreleg, it would help him look more balanced.

Sapphire: The ones you picked out of that page were some of my favourite sketches too! Your crits on the creatures were things I really should've noticed. Thanks for pointing them out!



This was a sketch I ended up not going with for the last C.O.W. (digger creature). I ended up not thinking of anything better so I guess I should've just gone with it.

cool, I like your creature drawings...I know what you mean about figure drawings....I'm taking classes right now but its gotta be done. Only thing about the colored figure is the head is too big, or maybe the person was just really skinny?

I really like your 3D models....they have a cartoonish feel to them.

I started painting the drawing I posted last week. This is the finished B&W version, and I'm going to colour it and a background next.
