Arrow Carnifex' ended sketchbook, 18th oct. 05

dunno if i will be able to draw daily always...work is exhausting...but anyways, you gotta set a starting point somewhere! so i'll try to update as often as possible. hope the pics aren't too big.

gave up after some time on this one(yesterday).

stupid warmup sketch from today that i dislike very much.

    block figures 1

    block figures 2

and a finished doodle i very much enjoyed creating(thread also in sketches section)
martian from "war of the worlds"

yeh well....tell me what you think so far and what i should practice most in the next time. my top priority right now is to get my pictures to look more natural, because yet they mostly look too much like comic-book art.
    so...LET ME HEAR YOUR CRITS!

These are very good! The only thing I noticed was that the girl in the first image, her arms seem to be at the wrong angle... as if her far away arm should be lower. All in all, a great start!

    thanx.
the girl's arms were the factor that made me give up-plus the already adressed comic-book look of the muscles and stuff.

    quick crits

Not to be a party pooper, but I think this might help: Your proportions aren't bad, but the positions look aquard and the figures look outlined. Try drawing into your figures more... jesture drawings from life may properly loosen you up. Also, try and pay more attention to your figure-ground relation. The fairy critter is lookin a little manly, try getting some girls to model for you, that'd probably be benefitial as well. Keep going, your on the right track!

btw, that love that last creature you posted, looks squishie.

I think if you rotate the fairy girl image a little to the right, it would look better and most likely let you draw the arms more accurately, because at the angle it's at now, it looks like she would fall right off.

Keep at it man, I'm going through the same thing. Too much work, not enough art, haha.

today wasn't a very good day for drawing-i'm being pretty tired all the time...well, i did atleast do something. just some gesture drawings mostly and a short attempt at dividing the hand into parts like mentler(pretty inspiring guy).

agh-i'd need some site with focus on feet and their anatomy...every anatomy book out there doesn't seem to focus too much on them.

a secretary sketch i don't like very much.(i hate shoes)

some stick figure tests from today.

then i decided i need a break from human/-like anatomy so i made some sketches inspired by sammy and brasshorsekiller.

probably one more to come later today.

    edit:
here's verily one more...for lord of laquinta. about 1 hour i think (still slooow).

I think you should draw bigger and on the feet start with the bone structure.
The one wehre you did draw the bones first is the best on that page imo.

    Hi Carnifex!
You have some nice sketches here, I like exspecially the rendering of the >martian from "war of the worlds"< and that black ink flowers (?)

I have some suggestins concerning anatomy study ....
I know it's quite expensicve, but I think Gottfried Bammes: Die Gestalt des Menschen (Lehr- und Handbuch der Künstleranatomie) might be of some help for seeing what can be working and what not in anatomy and how skeleton, muscles etc. are playing together.
And you'll find a lot on feet and hands there.
Or study the studies of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Duerer....there are so many ...it can be worthwhile
As you are living in Vienna I would also take advantage of the museums there - das Kunsthistorische Museums contains - if I remember right, a lot of statues... that might also help to improve your anatomy skills
    hope that's of some help...

Carnifex, Nike is right, Bammes is great and very helpful. You can get it from www.zweitausendeins.de for only 25 EUR in a paperback version!

As for size: You can work on A4 as long as you put only one or two items on it and try to fill the page. I prefer A4, too, because I only hava na A4 scanner and it's easier to transport.

thanx for the suggestions. i don't live in vienna, but i'll see if i can get into the museum when i'm there next time.
considering the book: very helpful tip, though i'll not buy it now, because i've used pretty much money for the sf workshop-and i expect to learn as much as possible there.
dunno, will i get to see any of you guys there?

teea:hah, thanx, but i've already found them before you can see some of the studies after it with the stick figures

phew...i've been sick for one week, and today i finally lost my feever(still bad cough though).
i got sick immediately after the workshop(infact on the flight back) and i'm still too lazy to scan all the 30+ pages i did there, so here's a little teaser. more or less. just some digital crap. inspired by marko's statements "to draw more and think less" and "to start with the arms for dynamic and with the legs for solid poses". also i guess it really helps some that i've started practicing block forms like rectangles etc.

perhaps i'll get my lazy ass to scan some pics on the weekend. until then, have a good time.
