heads, robots, and other inanimate objects Feb20

    Well, well, new thread....

I started my last one in Aug of 03' an am pretty embarrassed by some of the shit in there. I think I've earned a somewhat clean slate but if you want to journey into my seedy past of doo doo drawings then you can see my old book here:
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...&page=13&pp=60

A near-tech space suit design I'm working on, trying to go for function. These are research pages.

    photo-ref studies

WIP, trying to flesh out the design

    pre-lim design

Character for an HL2 mod, thought I'd show the process from sketch to end.

    pre-lim sketches

progress, this one turned out to be pretty tough, I suk with color...

I also suk at environments so I'm trying to do some studies. 1-hr for each, these are reduced so they don't suk as hard.

Again, i appreciate all comments but feel free to crit!
    -kemp

Thanks flex, t.mO, Joshuathejames, liam.c, SamOs, Bojee, Oliver23, xia, hito, and keepiru fer your comments in the end of the old thread

great new stuff, as I scanned past the wrestler, one part of my brain farted out "nice bit of 3d" then the rest of it said "that's fucking awesome 2d, now shut up and get down". Love the diver studies, especially all the technical odds and sods, for some reason my eye is drawn to the crotch (steady) in the pre-lim design, I think it looks too low, dunno if that's an optical illusion or what.

from the progression on the rest of your work there is no way you're gonna suck at environments for long.

    Very nice studies man.
    I spotted a few issues, so i though you might want to hear em;
The arm on the spacesuit guy on the second pic down is off,
it's too big if the arm is pointing down, and there is no curvature in the elbow or the wrist to indicate otherwise.
The guy on dec2.jpg is broken perspective-wise in the middle, take a closer look at what perspective you have on the torso versus the legs and the pelvic area. The further leg on the wrestler guy seems a bit too short for him to look balanced. That being said, you're doing an awesome job, i'm awed by your gas-mask studies especially.
Hope this helps, maybe you'll find a minut to crit some of the latest stuff in my sketchbook, i could really use some constructive crits.

Hey steak. cool stuff as always. I think the weakest part though, has to be the wrestler. He just does not have a really good dynamic pose. Maybe you can fix that up. Also, I personally it was a better idea just puting stuff in the old thread. It can be a kinda rough task switching back and forth. that is me anyway. can't wait fo mo.

Awesome stuff.. 5 stars. Loving your studies and designs, everything rocks.

2 questions: What medium are the mask studies on the orangy paper. They look like a mix between Marker pens and water colours. I wanna try em so.. hand over u secrets .
Also what type of pencils do u use for all ure sketches, your cross hatching technique looks really detailed and refined, bet it takes u ages.

    Nice work keep on posting.

    hell-ya!

I really like the tech studies for your space suit, but they look to me more like underwater suits. I think it's because the form-fittedness reminds me of wetsuits, more than the über-bulky NASA stuff. I keep thinking that it's one rip then it depressurizes and you die. Maybe incorporate more hardened/armor areas? I love the attention you gave to the gas tanks and hoses, they look functional.

One anatomy crit, in your pre-lim space suit design, I think the perspective on the far leg it a little too forced, bring it a little longer and make the thigh a touch thicker.

I think your color work is really coming along well! That Mexican wrestler for the Half-Life mod looks very cool.

too cool Steak. Love the space suits. Gotta admit that some of them do look like swimming suits but oh well. Ya from what I see a lot of people don't like doing environments... but when you think about it in games especially and really in movies especially also people need a good environmental artist. But they are looking good so far. I'd like to see one day a fully rendered environment that is worthy of being in like a star wars movie. Ha Just kidding I wouldn't mind just seeing an environment that You worked hard at, I feel that it would be better than you think.

    nice stuff as usual.
my advise would be to direct your focus on light/shadow values and planes and edges for a while.
you force your stuff into dimensionality with your hatching, but that´s a tool not 100% compatible with painting.
    keep it up mistah!

    super duper

    !!!

    like mcdonalds i'm lovin it.

whoa, the inkwash / marker style on the colored paper is SO damn sweet. That isht turns totally three dimensional!

Hopefully we can battle or draw again soon.

whew, I need a cigarette. Nice fresh start. The tone paper gas masks are the shizell. This whole post is the shizell. you, my friend, are the shizell. Anyway, one little fishy observation: the "pre-lim design" of the spacesuit, the dude looks funky to me. It's really hard to decipher, but I think his knees are too low. Just a thought, I might be wrong. Thanks for posting. I'll be watching for shurzell.

    xia: back at you dude!
youngpaddy: thanks for the crit man, yea that crotch bit is a bit large...
Yutani: thanks for the crit, yer right about the proportions. I'll crit your thread soon.
    Jackal: haha thanks dood.
obid: thanks for the crit, I'm trying to let the old thread die I "wrestled" with the wrestler for a while.
    mentler: thanks man
PHaTandy: thanks it's fabercastle brush pens with white acrylic highlights. Yea hatching is tedious I use a 2b mechanical.
    Syrogen: babies thanks!
Grooves: tdome was fun man, loved your entry
bwkeough: thanks for the crit man, I'll try to pull them back to space tech. The idea behind these is something called the SAS - space activity suit (they could have called it the activity space suit - ASS...) it's in development right now in australia, but very early stages. Apparently the user of the bulky suits gets fatigued easily because the body is under more pressure than normal. Also the idea of having less surface area for tearing and snags is on the table, but yea I see what you mean. I'll address that, thanks again.
Daunting: yea, every job post I've seen says enviro for art positions. i'll see what I can whip up.
Diego: Thanks! yea my hatches need more control, killing.people is putting me to shame...
jetPack: hehe fingers crossed... thanks bro
    liam.c: thanks capm'
dan V.D: thanks for the suggestions, I'm realizing this the more I'm painting, still a hard adjustment tho.
auden100: a cig huh was it good for you? thanks for the crit (that's the spirit!), I'll fix it on the final.
    liam.c: you crazy man you
    flaptraps: thanks dude.
Evil: Who told you my secrets? It's the babies I eat for breakfast. yea, those first pages are painful to look at. thanks!
one2hit: thanks juss some white acrylic, it's actually skull white citadel paint from my youth.

thought I'd post my thunderdome E vs. W coast. KevinP was my opponent and had an aeoosome pic on the topic. If you haven't seen the thread ye should check it out in the finished section.

    "the Ultimate PDA"

Still a WIP, over paint of an old sketch o' mine. I want to add lots of damage and scuffing after everything is established.

LordOfLaQuinta entry "mary mary quite contrary" a take on queen "bloody" mary. Still needs lots of work

Hell, I wish had something to critic here, but this last bach
it looks all good to me he he, i specialy like the armor desing
it looks funcional, and the renderign is very crisp, yet
the pose of the armor is very relaxed, I like artists that can
fully render a pic, and at the same time keep the dinamics
of the sketch intact, your work s looking0 GREAT man!!!,
keep us posted, your are huge inspiration!!!

You seem like a revamped S-tron, your new work is great, your colors are very sensitive.
I really like the suit-guy design, it'll great when you add a bit of dust or something with texture on it. Anyways, is looking great and looks like a 3d model so far...
Keep at this rate man, is great to see every of your keats/updates..

Hey man, your colors are getting better each post- a tip that might be interesting to try- take a layer in photoshop over your whole image, and decide if you want a warm or cool image... then fill the layer with a cool or warm, neutral color... like a grayed burnt sienna or blue, reduce the opacity to something like 10-20%. This will bring all of your colors together, harmonize them, as well as make the values more similar. In the spots you want to stand out, highlights and stuff, just erase from the low opacity layer. I been messing around with that, it's simlar to the effect of an oil wash on a painting.

but man, these posts certainly make me want to snort some steak.... in a good way!

    wait. huh?
