    For crazy tree roots, you can't do better than the Moreton Bay fig tree (a kind of banyan), made famous by "Jurassic Park." I saw them in person in Kauai at:

    Put in some temperate vegetation (hint: the Scottish Highlands have -great- ferns and mushrooms) to mix it up and you've got some decent starting reference!

    You might try looking for bonsai pictures as well. They are not to the right scale but they capture the essence of what we find most appealing about trees.
