    Some personal art.

It’s been a little while since I’ve had time to work on some personal art so I really had a lot of fun with these. The first was done for the UK vs. Dallas Thunderdome and the second was just for fun.

Damn, these look pretty good!I wish the minataur was a bit brighter, I kind of have to squint to see the details. That frog(toad?)guy is great, the hands and feet look cool-waitasec,shouldn't he have webbed feet and hands?Just a thought. Is that a Speedo he's wearing?!
    Nice work!

These are very cool bobo. I love the texture in the second one. What are you using to get that texture? Is it just part of the process as you, you keep adding texture, or is it done at the end when everything is rendered.

Very cool. Great textures and great expressive characters. Plus one of 'em is a treefrog wearing a speedo. That's an A+ right there.

    Great stuff

I really like the tones and textures.

<insert nitpick> The minotaur seems a little flat, the foreground leg is the exact same tones as the background leg. Same goes for the ax with relationship to both arms. Also the lack of a strong light lends to being more flat. <end nitpick>

    Love the frogman!
    A may be a pro but that's in 3d!

Like everyone, I too LOVE the textures. My crits are as follows. You have a bad tangent with the left hand (his right) and his leg. That arm too seem too stiff and lifeless for this his dynamic pose. The axe looks great though somewhat flat (textures kick @$$). I also agree with Thrash that a strong light source would help add depth and roundness to the form. The frogman is tight thouhg. no real crits.

i gotta say it, these rock my world. i saw the minotaur on the thunderdome thread and thought it was awesome...the frog is just as good, if not better. your paintings look so 3-dimensional that i feel like i could reach into the monitor and touch them...i guess that comes from your background in 3D modeling. In any event, any chance we can see a tutorial from you? I think it would be immensely helpful in my own work. Keep up the good work and post more often (when you can!).

Man Alive! that minotaur went straight to my desktop wallpaper. I don't know if I've seen a better take on a minotaur. The Frog is awesome too.

Like mostly everyone before me I too like your work, but I do feel the minotaur looks slightly flat. Maybe brighten up areas to pull the figure out? My favourite is the toad though, great colour, great texture. I love what you've done with the skin to get that seethrough effect.

    Good stuff

i am shamed yet again by your level of detail. I love your work bobo, please most more and often :]

one crit of the minotaur piece, the right hand seems to appear as if it is behind the leg, i would suggest moving the arm over to the right of the image more so it over laps that thigh and gives it better sense of depth.

Thanks guys! I really had a lot of fun with him.

The texture overlay technique is actually the same I use for my game textures as illustrated in the following tutorial. Just instead of starting with a vertex bake from a model I start with a loose sketch. (Also of note: I rarely use dodge and burn anymore, opting instead to paint strait with color)

    http://www.bobotheseal.com/Skinning_...utorial_01.htm

I do think the key to using overlays is to be subtle with them. You don’t want a texture to define the painting. You want it to meld with it. Here is a PSD that has my frog painting and texture overlay separated. I hope it can help.

    http://www.bobotheseal.com/tuts/frogtastic_overlay.zip

    Thanks again everyone!

    Thumbs up

    Hey Bobo...

These look really nice. Next time try and realllly bring something new to the design. I know, I know, "eeverything has been done" ..as they say. But, I know you have the skills. Make more of a conscience effort to bring something more unique to the designs.

Great rendering, BoBo - the detail in these is very impressive.

It's already been said, but I agree that both characters feel a little flat; as they are, the hues and level of detail are pretty much uniform across both images - adding some variation here and there to push some elements back, and focus attention on others would really help to add depth.

Lovely stuff, regardless. A worthy winner..!
