    --Phuzion's Sketchbook

Okay, this is probably going to be documentary style sketches for the most part, with some concept pages thrown in for good measure. Basically, I'm not at all happy with where my skills are because they seem limited to solely characters, so I'm working on everything ELSE for now. Also, I can draw way better when I draw out of my head than when I draw from life, which isn't necessarily bad, but it seems like they should at least be on par, so I'm working on my observational-drawing skills. Environments, animals etc. So this is me practicing. Drawing from life, from photos, from my head, whatever I can. So, that said, shall we continue the tour?

These next two are out of my head using shapes or ideas I found in nature:

    Natural History Museum:

    Nature books at home:

And just so I don't totally alienate myself, gotta have at least one hot body

    Okay, more to come soon...

Cool stuff Dan. I really like that first page a lot and those animal studies are wonderful.

How come you didnt tell me you were going to the natural history museum? I would've gone!

Burning Eyes: Thanks man, I appreciate it... the search for growth never ends I guess, but here's some more ;p

I.was.ink: Gracias amigo! I need to do more animal studies... all in good time. I'll let you know when I go next... probably tuesday, but maybe tomorrow...

Jens: Environments were just always my weak point, and I've been feeling very limited by that.

HOWEVER! Here is a divergance from environments and such... just playing with my grey toned sketchbook, which is a perfect A4 size, so it scans in one piece ;p Always positive... pencil and gouache:

Burning Eyes: Heh heh, thanks again man ;p I'm going to try REALLY hard to keep this one going... I'm in the habit again of drawing quite a lot everyday, even if I'm not working, so I should have the volume to keep it going... we'll see

Sok N. Wett: Heh heh... toned stuff is fun, but I always have to go back to the white paper every so often. He-man... yeah, gotta get on that shit.

Steak-tron: Yeah, I want to get my other stuff to the level of my figures... at least close to it anyway... I don't use reference for any of the figure/character work 'cept myself in the mirror and observation observation observation ALL THE TIME!! Heh heh, so we'll see where I go with the environments etc.
Yeah, Catwoman is inately hot I think ;p

liam.c: Thanks man! Always appreciated, but I still got a loooooong road ahead of me... So much in my head to work on that it almost feels intimidating... so I gotta take it a day at a time. Baby steps

One more for today... tonight... yesterday... whatever. I was going to put tattoos on her and stuff, but I got sleepy and impatient, oh well.

    Peace!

That's some top notch work, dude. I really like the last couple on toned paper. Is the highlights what you're using the gouache for? Keep it going man, I really dig the thread!

    Poooower Buuuuuump!!!!

Burning Eyes: I wish I had something deeper to say besides "thanks" buuuut... Thanks bro ;p

I_am: Thank you sir! Yeah the gouache was used for the highlights... I've had this toned book for while, but didn't pull it open until now, and I'm quite happy with it.

MIKECORRIERO: Thanks man, your work has been killer too. I've been spending a lot of time in the last couple of days just really observing "environments" in the real world, and the natural composition of "chaos" that occurs, and It's absolutely fascinating.

    |NTeRN: Thanks duuuuude! That's cool if you don't see anything wrong, I just won't point the flaws out ;p Maybe I'll see you up at AC!

Sinix: Thanks! I've been keeping up the work, though in various areas the last couple of days... I'll scan when I get a chance.

SO! I've finally gotten around to starting the redesigning process of my site: www.ArtDL.com
It's just a teaser right now, starting with this image:

    mmmmm,nice stuff ...
You nailed it with that very first drawing, theres always a tendicy to go over the top with highlights, tones, colours, but that first one is a good example of less can be more, thats the strongest piece out of em all IMO..

    keep going man...

    Go Go Gadget Power Bump!!

JackalAnubis: Why thank you! Yeah, that hand took some decision making as far as what I could leave out without completely flattening it, though I'm kinda getting the hang of all that now... I hope.

Rusty: Hey man! Glad you could stop by... I've been admiring your work for quite some time. Thanks, I'm glad you like that first one. It really was all about composition... though I would've used warm gray for those foreground plants if I had it... oh well ;p

Xpose: Gracias! It'll keep comin' as long as I can keep it up (no pun intended).

Bojee: Awesome, thanks! Here's more just for you ;p

Dadamafia: Yeah, it's a fun sketchbook... but really it's all about variety for me. Pencil, pen, paint, white, brown, gray... whaterver

Okay! Here are a few more pages of studies drawn between 20+ pages of storyboards today... which I can't post or Disney would sue the bajeezus out of me!! (no it's not that glamorous... it's just Power Rangers)

More comments! Crits! All of it!... Bring it on...

nature mm yess.. I love your womens! *drools*

if you're interested in animal drawing I highly suggest you buy this book: "The Weatherly Guide to Drawing animals" this guy is a god when it comes to drawing aminals, Joe Weatherly. You should try and catch a fieldtrip of his if you can. I do believe he's currently teaching at the Laguna College of Art and Design its some fine arts school in Laguna beach.. but yeah the books definately worth checking out! Hit me up on aim if you'd like to see a couple pages scanned :]

    Hey thanks Lim ;p
Finished picture, eh? No clue when those will come about, but here are some value study thumbnails I worked today. It's a bit different than what I normally do, or have been doing, since I hate copying pictures, but movies kick too much ass. For class we had to choose a movie and do eight thumbnails depicting different types of lighting (or choose two movies and do 4 from each). I chose Blade Runner, cause it's do shit when it come to lighting. It has everything from very bright lights, to lighting so subtle you can barely see any form.
These were fairly quick, about 30-40 minutes each, with most of the time being focused towards getting a likeness... cuase I that shit's fun to me. I wanted to achieve a look of photorealism more through the proper placing of the basic light and dark shapes, rather than rendering, so I hope I did just that ;p

Okay! That's it for now... Peace all!

those last ones are quite impressive! i didnt know you did photorealist also. some really amazing work, altho i will always be a fan of your ladies, its nice too see the variety of sketches you have here.

One thing that i noticed, is that your buildings built out from rocks (the 2 at the beginning) are all squarish and boring, while you have that rock-roof-thingy (with the little man standing in its shadow...) which is a very interesting organic shape for a rock formation. My point is, you should use more organic shapes in your mountain-architecture, archways, etc.

I must say, you've become one of my favorite artists (my other 2 would be Samwise Didier and Ross Cambell... now adding Dan Phuzion...)

Oh man always a pleasure to see updates from the man himself. I'm really diggin the animal studis, and also the value study. The one that looks really good is top two right side (bearded man, and girl), and the last one in the bottom right with the face of the guy, they look realistic when your viewing it about a half a feet away.
