I'm trying to get a handle on lighting techniques. I find it hard to "see" the lighting and shadows in my head without a reference. Here's one I've been playing with. C&C appreciated as always.

Hey,
if you want something to look like it's glowing, generally you want that object to be the brightest in the scene. Just make your main lightsource brighter. That will also increase your value range, thus making it easier to describe the shape of the surrounding objects with your light.
Read this tutorial to get you started.
It takes a while to get used to how lights work, but it's just a matter of practice, so just keep going.
