KHAAAAAAAAN!!
Rhynome: Take care, the english word "Carnival" doesn't describe the same as "Karneval" in Germany. Karneval is a Cologne-based term, unlike Fastnacht, which is celebrated in southern Germany, around Mainz. Although they are identical, don't mix them up, it will most likely grant you a black eye.
Fasching (pronounced "Fushing" by the way) is the same celebration (taking place this weekend every year, ending the lent). Fasching tho is used as a term in most other regions that celebrate this event and regions that are not your typical Carnival-strongholds (like Berlin, Austria and Switzerland).
Just in case anyone cares. It's not the first time I heard from English speaking persons that they don't like the word Carnival. I was wondering why? What's wrong with it (not that I'm liking it myself, I'm near Mainz, not Cologne...)
I am Carnival, the god of pain and grief, I shall eat your children!
Look, that works. Carnival is just a scary word.
Heh, cheers for the heads-up. Are there any Bavaria specific terms, that don't really make any sense, are usually avoided by most Germans and Austrians alike and are just pronounced weird?
Bavarians confused me until I got it explained by 3 or so different people. That whole Ich being 'Ikh' or 'Isch' thing. There I am, harmlessly listening in on someone else's conversation, trying to pick out keywords in German that I might understand and suddenly 'Isch'... what... CONFUSION, it threw me off entirely.
Maybe it's some sort of Bavarian defence mechanism against people listening in on them, but oh, I'll be prepared for it next time!
Not that I listen to other people's conversations or anything... oh no (I usually just lip-read).
Sorry for going off-topic:
Isch ("ish"-pronunciation) is a southern German thing, but lately got around everywhere else due to the Turkish/southern European immigrants slang. Nothing to be proud of, it sounds silly and uneducated. Ick therefore, is from Berlin. The Berlin dialect is a wonderful dialect to me (because it's a wonderful city, mind you).
Bavaria? Well, Bavaria isn't Germany. It should be detachedBut they have some weird pronounced words (actually, all of them). Scary to listen to. I can't think of the British equivalent, but concerning the US, Bavaria is probably something like Alabama or Mississippi (no offence, it's just the grubby use of the language). BTW, I guess you're talking about visiting the Oktoberfest, right?
German dialects video (First one is Hessian dialect (!!!), second one is Bavarian).
And to please the topic, here's what I look like after two nights of extensive drinking till 6 in the morning:

Does anyone else see the letter Phi there, or is it just me?
If it is just me and the Admins are hunting me down... is the name 'Robert' free on the forum? Seems better than 'Rhynome' for this forum.
Also, Jabo, looking very alert there. And interesting video, despite not speaking German it doesn't mean the video is rendered entirely useless to me; I can still hear accent changes and the names of regions, so still some use.
And I just wanted a dig at the Bavarians, that's all.

They don't like them, so it's somewhat like saying 'Thou shalt not blaspheme!'Originally Posted by corky13
It's not quite 1984, as the name was still there and we all know what it meant, or those of us who didn't know what it meant it then wasn't important to them. It's not as though they edited all our posts to...
...in our fight against Euras... Eastasia!
But basically, it's not all too bad, and I'm sure they'd revoke it if we asked them, so not bad really.
