Spartan Camp #256- 50 gestures + Optional "Movie Gestures Study"

Spartan Camp #256- 50 gestures + Optional "Movie Gestures Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 3rd of March.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Movie Gestures Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    The exercise
Gestures in films will most likely display some sort of emotion or be part of an action, which can produce useful study material. It also sets them apart from drawings referenced from posemaniacs and most photography, since those are mostly non-functional gestures. For this weeks optional study, use film/movies as reference for a couple of your gestures. For the sake of this exercise full body shots and human figures would probably be most suitable. If wish, you could also do a few longer figures or some portraits. Stick to using film reference though, and note the film's name down. We might recognize them!

    Reference
Any film you own, *cough*downloaded*cough*, parts or trailers that can be seen on sites like youtube, or screenshots.

When it comes to gesture drawing, where does gender make a difference? Proportions, mass, size, muscle and fat placement, bone structure, you name it. Once can often recognize someone's gender from far away, even with very little information. In this optional study, focus on these differences. A comparison may be most suitable. For example, a male and female face, leg, arm, torso compared. Or the same gesture, in both a male and female version. Or a side-by-side comparison of the two, the type you often find in anatomy drawing textbooks.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

    Oo awesome optional topic.

    Here's what I did yesterday:
A 2hrs class from Pixielovely. The last one was an hour long and it just irritated me the whole time, trying to get the right skin tones and his damm face just stayed totally wrong lol. For most of the time he looked like he was crying!

LeanneMGardner great start!! Nice range of subjects too!

Here's the last from me this week, off to Tunisia tomorrow for a week. Will upload lots of drawn from life gestures hopefully next week (there, motivation for me to draw while I'm there otherwise I will look silly in next weeks thread! Lol)

Another pixielovely class, 1hr this time.
Some sketches from a couple of movie trailers, didn't have time to do much today.
1 pose from Les Miserables and the other two from 300.

Animare, you win the internet with that 300 gesture.....(ps: you'e getting better with anatomy especially male torsos ... I approve)
LeanneMGardner, great start! I love that you worked with dynamic poses whether it's human or animal, as well as the anatomical studies. Construction FTW! Keep it up (and welcome if you're new! -my memory is horrible so forgive me if you've been here before)

From Teen wolf season 1 ep 12. It's a pretty good show ruined by a bad protagonist/average lead actor... the rest of the cast is phenomenal tho.

@ BlackDelphin, that last pose looks really great! the torso feels a tad too short tho or it could be the thighs are too long and they throw off the proportions.

Thanks e-nat, you're right. The torso seems ok to me, but the thighs are waay to long.

Some more sketching, this time from life.

    Excellent job guys!

First 2 images are compilations of quick (~45sec) gestures using pen and pencil. Reffed from gesture drawing tool.
Then some from imagination. Was lacking focus on these.
    Finally a longer study.

Raoul Duke, of course This is an open event!

Gestures from imagination, I'm trying to apply recent studies. I still feel the contours are a bit too cartoony (as in too straight as opposed to showing muscle form).
Also this week's optional study is very good for natural poses.

Sort of started digging myself into a hole when I got started on color. But the color pallette on the Eric Andre show is too much to resist.

Some of you have probably noticed that the new CA banner at the top of the page now also features a Spartan Camp thumbnail!
Personally I'm pretty excited about this. I'm currently trying to figure out who did us this favour. I'm not sure where the image is from either.

Also - very diverse gestures this round. Looking good!

The thumbnail was how I found this joint. I wouldn't have known anything about it otherwise.
black delphin- you are close to doing a notan. A good example would be the madmen or casino royal intro intro. It a technique for storyboard artists. Useful for balancing color. Try using the polygon lasso tool.

Raoul Duke you're right, it does almost look like a notan. though the thinking process is not that flat.
I usually use a brush set to other dynamics so one can see the volume, but these I want block in further on,
so they turned out like that. Thanks for the input.
