SCAD. Do I even stand a chance?

So umm yeah... I recently moved to Fayetteville Georgia with a friend from Phoenix Arizona which finally gave me the opportunity to go to an art school that's NOT the art institutes.. I really want to major in Animation as I love cartoons and want to animate my ideas... However other than the Art Institutes I could not find a school that offered 2D animation. I mean I know it's a dying breed, but I love cartoons over 3D, though 3D is awesome too...

Anyways... most of what I know is anime and self taught, but it hasn't gotten me very far as my learning style requires physical teachers... and I DO NOT have a high school diploma or GED yet (due to circumstances.) I read in their book they mailed me that students of exceptional skill or motivation can pass the requirements with supplementary materials? (recommendations, interview, portfolio, etc.)

...Do I stand a chance at getting in at all? Like can the diploma/GED requirement be skipped through those things?

Also, I live with my friend in Fayetteville and want to attend the Atlanta location... my friend told me that first-years HAVE to dorm at the campus. Is this true or not? I looked it up but found very differing opinions from people.

I think at this point in time, your best option is to go to a local community college where you can take some intro art classes along with GED preparation classes.

So... are you a "student of exceptional skill or motivation?"

    From this, I'm guessing no.

SCAD is actually pretty easy to get into. You don't NEED a portfolio, essay, recommendations, ect, for SCAD. Just apply with their online application, send them your high school transcript/GED stuff, and you're done. But you do need a GED or High School Diploma. All schools require you to finish high school or get a GED. I don't think freshmen need to dorm. Pretty sure it's just recommended that you do to make new friends and such.

As for 2D animation, yeah, it is a dying breed, but there are still quite a few schools that offer it other than SCAD. School of Visual Arts offers it, however, you do need a portfolio to apply to SVA. Academy of Art University also offers 2D animation. And like SCAD a portfolio isn't needed. Academy of Art has a 100% acceptance rate. Pretty much anyone who applies is accepted but I hear it's very difficult to stay in that school once you're in.
