    Various's Sketchbook

Hello, name's Various, I'm a Digital Arts & Entertainment student (DAE). Any colleagues out there: I salute you.

The situation is this: our teachers at school are all about giving and getting feedback and using that intel to our advantage to progress and that's why I'm here.

What are my skillz then? I'm not the greatest of artists (yet ), but I'm no total rookie either. I can hold my own when it come to anatomy and facial anatomy, though it's mostly limited to lineart. I'm not to horrible at shading and painting (digitally), it's nothing special, but I'm getting there. I'm used to Photoshop and other Adobe software and I have some skill at using a tablet without too much trouble. I prefer the traditional arts though (using a refillable pencil to keep my medium clean), but I totally see the advantages of coloring digitally.

I will drop my stuff here in batches, so as to tie them together a bit. The goal is to eventually update this thread weekly, maybe daily if this works out. I hope it does.

Lastly this: I can take a pounding when it comes to feedback, it both motivates me and puts my feet back on the ground but it should be constructive criticism only. I will also take any advice form my teachers over obscure forum posts, as you'll understand

    And there you have it

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    2010-2012

The First batch is really quite horrible, It's mainly old stuff, up to 2,5 years old. I's what I've been doing before things got real. As you can see I was struggling with some aspects of anatomy and shading and a whole other bunch a madness, but in the spirit of a friendly community,I wanted to get them out of the way before getting to the serious stuff: Work for school and recent sketches, lineart and stuff.

An Interesting thing to note is that many images are originally intended for a Skyrim total conversion mod called "MERP", which was based on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. It's the sort of mod team with great ambitions that will never get anywhere; and even though it was my motivation to get drawing for a good while, I never had the feeling I was taken seriously as a 'concept artist'.

    2012 Q3-4

So this is where things get serious!

In other words, here's what I've been up to for the first part of the module preproduction of DAE1.

Only 3 assignments I'm afraid, since most of our non-digital stuff is handed in. The carriage thing was our final assignment of this term, also more commonly known as 'exam'. It's not too bad I guess. it got me through it all, even though I messed up some deadlines throughout the first semester haha!

A quick note about the robot: yeah it is awesome. Nope I didn't draw it. Design and lineart is done by one of my teachers (Nick Marien and I hope I'm allowed to use IRL names), as a base for the students to practice shading. So yeah that part is mine

    Here it is:

    Hello again.

What we have here are some recent sketches 'n stuff I've made on the train and at home. You'll immediately notice how I work. Yep, a mess thumbnails, shapes, assignments sketches, anatomy, faces and even some math calculations for pete's sake . And I have tons of these collected over the past years. I'm sure there are advantages to this way of going about things, but I'll try to cut it out a bit, especially now I'm sending it into cyberspace .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've spent a lot of time trying to create my own 'style', because that is very important to me. It's true that it might be educational to inspire yourself by extracting from other artists' work, but my mind doesn't let me I tend to feel bad about my art if it feels like copying to me. That's just how I roll. Anatomy is also pretty much self-taught. Trial and error and hardly looking at ref. I really want to rectify that mistake though, and see what i can do to fix the damage :/

    Please leave your feedback.

Hey there, for anatomy I personally recommend Michael Hampton, he makes really easy to understand, and about style I don't think you should worry to much right now, it comes eventually, don't force it, besides that just keep posting

Way to go on the carriage dude! It's good to see you're working on figure drawing and anatomy. I'm hoping to see more

I will get into the routine of posting stuff soon. I've got a little sketchbook which I'm getting used to, but I need a bigger one so I can properly scan lineart in. Stay tuned.

Yeah the carriage turned out ok, but it's not really my cup of tea. Ironically it's the best art I've produced to date

    Hello Various,

It's good that you're starting with anatomy allready. If you don't know about Andrew Loomis, search for his .pdf's on Drawing the head and hands and figure drawing for all it's worth. You can find them here: http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/

You can also check out Bridgman to study the forms of the figure and muscles. If you want to go more in detail in the anatomy itself, I would advice 'The Human Figure: An Anatomy for Artists' by David K. Rubins. This book contains clear diagrams. A good way to study the muscles is to color them on each diagram.

    Have fun!

Thank you for the tips. I am more interested in hands and muscles than faces at this point so I will give those pdf's a go.

EDIT man these are awesome and really easily explained. Gonna print it out :p thanks!

Hey gang, here's some of my progress in digital painting! Here we go.

    25/02 - 03/03/'13

Some explanation might be needed. This assignment deals with all the stuff we've learned so far. Correct usage of perspective, shading, coloring, composition,... It's about little toy cars racing and causing mayhem on and around the student's desk (the subject is chosen by the teacher, and again it is not my cupa tea, but I did my best anyway). I'm not finished and the deadline is next tuesday, so feedback is welcome more than ever.

First we have some thumbnails, a rather detailed light study, and my WIP colored final. Might post more thumbs if i feel like it.

    Hey gang

Here's some more progress in digital painting. I know the perspective looks extreme, but it's intentional, in fact, a lot of care and effort has been made to make the perspective look the way it does.

By no means is this work finished, no coloring, some shading issues, textures, but it gives a general idea of the final piece. Deadline's still more than a week away.

Gonna start treating this space as an online portfolio rather than a feedback thingy :p

This is my best digital painting to date I think. The backstory is Turin Turambar (Silmarillion, Children of Hurin) ambushing a band of orcs in the woods of Nargothrond. No ref! Only default round brush was used. I'm no big fan of fancy brushes tbh. Let alone brushed with a full shape :/
