Spartan Camp #254 - 50 gestures + Optional "Clothed Gestures" Study

Spartan Camp #254- 50 gestures + Optional "Clothed Gestures" Study

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 10th of February.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Clothed Gestures" Study, in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    The Background
Gesture drawings are frequently done 'naked', both in reference and drawing guides. After all, we're practising the human figure. In practice however you may find yourself drawing figures that are usually clothed. This begs the question; do clothed gestures differ fundamentally? Is it tougher, easier? This week we'll find out trough practise.

    The Exercise
Simply make sure that besides your 'normal' gestures, you also have a set of clothed gestures. This will allow us to compare so that we might learn something new. Ideally these should be gestures, not fully rendered drawings.
Reference advised. Many of us use gesture drawing tools that already feature clothed gestures, which is very convenient for this optional study. You can simply include a couple of those (will be editing reference shortly).

    Reference
    Link - some figure galleries
    Some gesture drawing tools that include clothed figures;
    Lovecastle
    Quickposes
    Pixelovely
You can also use fashion show images for the optional study.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

More Loomis heads. Getting bored by these, though, I think I'll move back to full bodies now.

Good start! I'm updating the optional study and reference.

On a side note I'm going to have to check the last thread again. Did we really have 20 participants? Either way that was really off the charts! I can't remember the last time we had such a successful week. Hats off to everyone!
I was slacking the last few days but I'm going to make sure I'll give the SC the appropriate attention.

Glenn Keanneee!!! Yes, probably one of my favorite artists of ALL TIME! Great person to study!
And yes, the recent turn outs are crazy! The downside is that I don't feel like giving critique because it would take too long

I went life drawing today, Here's my turn out (full images are on my blog: http://dailysketchbookchallenge.blogspot.ie/ )

    So many names!! Go Spartans!

Varied timers from 30secs to 30mins.
    Some 30sec poses.
Trying to slow down on these. Focusing on where their weight is, what they might be thinking/feeling rather than just copying a pose.

Quick edit: Added some dreadful poses from imagination. But I believe they are better than my previous attempts so yay staying positive!

    Alright.
So here's a selection of some drawing I've been doing. A page with sketches while watching "That 70s show", horse anatomy studies, and a selection of drawings from yesterdays life drawing session. (more on: http://dailysketchbookchallenge.blog...n-sol-art.html)

I've spent a lot of time lurking around Spartan Camp, so I decided to just bite the bullet and join
I just recently got a bamboo tablet and figured the best way to get used to the hand-eye co-ordination was to do some gestures.
    They're about 100-120 seconds each I think.

@ Olooriel, I love your dedication! the heads are looking more natural every time you post. It'll be cool to apply them to imaginary portraits.

@Anthis, Last week was amazing! Thanks for your work as well!

@ Hamorhage, yeah, he's amazing! Best part is, it all fits with construction studies. I never though Disney concept art was so closely related to drawing fundamentals...silly me.

Your drawings this week have more life in them than the last couple of weeks, I'm guessing you got out of the life drawing slump I'm loving the horse studies!

ps: was the model really that chubby? Also he looks very expressive in that 3/4 headshot.

@jsn, Welcome!! 3 years is not bad...It took me four and a half . I love the caricatures, they have good expressions. My suggestion would be to focus on full figures as well and try to capture as much gesture as you can.

@ Animare, Great work balancing observation and imagination. Though, the torso is your imaginary drawings is somewhat short. It makes the arms and legs appear very elongated. if you give it more space, the figure will look more proportional.

@ sweetguts, you have confident sweeping lines. great for gesture work! And good attention to the rib cage area. Have fun camping!

@ The-Idle-Elk, welcome!! Great beginning, you have a good grasp of proportion. I would suggest being careful with the chest area (rib cage), some figures are missing part of it Keep up the good work.

e-natThanks very muchly! Nice work, you seem to get lotsa lines down very quickly, and deliberately.

So far I've been trying out Manga Studio 5, with these drawings. Love it! Haven't tried colouring in MS5 yet, I still prefer PS CS4.

    Will add colours today!

    Alright, let's do coms commenting

e-nat: Yeah, I got out of my slump. I broke down my way of drawing in order to get more character and life in my work. And for a couple of weeks I think I really didn't do any good work. But it's paying off now. One important thing I do now I draw a page of circles and lines before I start sketching, it really loosens you up. But again, everybody wants to do different things, I actually am doing animation again at the moment. So it's more about movement and character. Your work seems to be more illustrative, so then I think construction infused with life is more important. And you're doing amazing, I'm trying to stay on your toes but your pace is too quick
Really love your imaginary poses, beautiful faces and the proportions are spot on.

Olooriel: Don't forget to do some imaginary stuff to apply what you're learning. I think it's important to go back and forth.

isn: couple of really nice drawings, I don't really like that brush myself, I like some opacity myself for lighter lines, but you're showing your skills but using an opaque brush. Would love to see some longer caricature work from you.

Animare: Another soldier! Funny thing is when I like at your poses form imagination, they don't seem to start like your poses from reference. I think that is why they comes across stiff, because you're thinking about construction and not about gesture and simple lines.

Sweetguts: I really like your method. 2 circles, one for torso and hip. I think getting those 2 right is pretty much the most important thing.

Idle Elk: You know what you're doing ! I think there's only one thing I could suggest and that is to draw the ear to connect that head to the body more. It also helps to get some depth with just one mark for the ear.

This afternoon I am heading in town with a bunch of sketchers to draw rugby supporters. Should be fun

HamorhageThanks heaps! These kinda brushes do take a lotta gettin used to,...kinda like drawing with markers, pens, etc. But digitally, I don't waste paper or ink
I also like other brushes from a few awesome artists on the net.

I forgot how fun gesture drawing is! I finished another few but I don't think I'll have time to do the full 50 gestures so I'm just gonna do some commenting on everybody's stuff!

e-nat Thanks! Yeah you're right about chest area.
I tend to draw in terms of contour a bit too much and I'm trying to think more about mass.
Definitely gonna work on it! Your own drawings have great movement to them.
I really like the ones from imagination and the clothing ones. Can't wait to see more!

Olooriel Those loomis heads are looking good!
It would def be good to see some imaginative stuff and maybe some full body gestures like you said.

Hamorhage Thanks for the tip about placing the ear.
I tried it with my latest bunch of gestures and they definitely seemed to make more sense.
Your drawings really animated I love the the watercolour of the guy with the hat!

jsn Love the caricatures! I'm gonna echo Hamorhage here and say that I'd also love to see some longer poses from you.
Love the guy with the big fluffy beard in your first post and the silhouettes in your last.

Animare Your line quality is really nice. I think drawing longer and fuller poses might help with understanding weight, proportion etc.
Also your color sketch of the guy with the swords looks deadly, quite literally

sweetguts You seem to have the ability to get a lot of information down quickly (I am woeful at 30 sec gestures!).
Just be careful of making torsos too long.
    Enjoy your camping trip!

Anyway here's a few gestures from me. Can't wait for next week's Spartan Camp!
