Eek, first EOW attempt. Something real quick, just trying to get the feel down. Then I re-read the brief and realized I missed the red dwarf bit. Will try to figure out how to somehow reference that later.

    Great stuff on this thread!

Kvenh: It doesn't You're ticking all the boxes that make a cool environment and it works well as an image, but it looks more like a massive industrial facility/mining thing. And there's no probe or red dwarf in sight. You can still bend your image to put those in, but imo it is wiser to take those two elements as a starting point and not reverse-engineer it. Just my two cents ^^

Pixeltuner: hehe yeah, I should've been more clear. It didn't start as an eow piece and wasn't thinking of submitting it, just figured I'd post it as it in my head was dabbling around similar themes. Thanks for the input!

Pixeltuner: HA! doesnt look like a penis now!

Sushy: i used photos of clouds i took recently, and multiple layers some on divide some on luminosity and some on diffrence mode = cool effects
using colour dodge / overlay you can paint stars in with a soft round brush gives it a glow. most importantly experiment.

monkeybread: i love yours but that planet you added is far to small so it throws proportions out a bit + its position?

kahel: liking the probe like photo sections/ very hard to do.

now i can start, i feel like i'm getting somewhere

Finished my Industrial Design for the current round over there, so thought I would jump into some EOW awesomeness.

Very quick, like I mean 10 minutes quick, sketch just to get an idea down and start playing with composition. I think I'll concentrate more on final rendering than original-concept this time.
One thing that sticks out is the planet / moon in the lower left corner, probably too close to the edge for my liking right now. In any case more to come, should be fun.

    You guys are looking good!

kvneh: ahhh kvneh what the hell are you. go away. stop making good enviros and being great at scale relationships which I don't have grasp on at all. /slinks away

though in seriousness, if you kept the shapes put replaced the sky with more NASA, I think it could work.

LukasN: cool colours, tone your brushstroke down a bit, because it feels more like texture than style now (as in you seem to trying to capture cosmic dust storms and nebulas in the back, which don't translate well with excessive brushstrokes)

adrian: the composition feels half and half, also more blackness! Space is black. I look at the current white on the left and think of some cafe latte that I can't get because it's half past midnight right now.

lionsketch there should be something in the background. The way you positioned the character makes it feel like it's moving somewhere. In addition, with the canyon-like backdrop it doesn't feel like a quiet/still atmosphere, so I feel like there should be something up in the bg.

sushy uh oh, someone had the balls to fly through a solar storm

incinerated: I think a bit of blackness of space would help. Because this light pastelly colour palette makes me think of more Sailor Moon than ... a regular moon. I know you're probably trying to capture the multicoloured galaxies, but even so, most of their colours are contained. So in other words, I like the previous one.

monkeybread: now idk if it's my monitor or what, but that ship is getting lost with that planet. I'm seeing really similar reds (on my screen) on the ship and planet, so it looks like it's just camouflaged in there.

pixel: hey pixel. hey. hey. finish it. Also those asteroids are nice. @_@ I had so much trouble with asteroids.

So I never realized I kind of suck at painting space enviros. The blackness is.. strangely hard. So here is what I currently have finished, I might just leave it like that. I kind of like, but not so much. This is my redemption after the half-obliterated space hanger week.

Now I understand how hard this challenge is. There are so many incredible works here!
If possible, can I please get some critiques? I'm having a hard time making it look spacious and interesting :/

LukasN: thats a great improvement dude, I like the middel one best.

Kerah: just do a bunch of simple composition thumbnails sketches to start with, don't start rendering seriously untill you have something interestring.
spaciousness is achieved through atmosphere, overlap and general perspective... Hope that helps

I was bored at work heres another

thanks hekatoncheir!!! very useful tip, hey man aren't you snowed in by the blizzard?? also great wip , its a little distracting with that gradient curve under the satelitte. looks like a scanning radar from the probe??

LukasN: wow! talk about taking it to the next level! i like the 2nd thumb.

    Sushy: its coming along.

a little related / inspiration to keep going!

@hekatoncher Thanks man, you are of course totally right. I did notice that as well and am addressing it while doing the ship design. Your entry is looking boss; dig your clean lines and graphic shapes. I second another opinion I read about that curved gradient. It's a little confusing what it is and the comp doesn't really need it. Only other crit would be where the red dwarf star is hiding but the brief could be taken as only the planet system without needing to show the star of course.
@LukasN The second one has the best composition I think, and it looks great, but it doesn't really read red dwarf star. I'd also consider not cutting off the spaceship with the canvas and maybe moving it up a bit. The 3rd would be a nice perspective with the probe in there somewhere I think, but hard to tell as it stands.
@Adrian I'm not sure I completely agree with you about the size throwing off the balance though granted it is a somewhat unusual comp and I definitely took liberties with the size of the planet in relation to the star. Thanks for the crit!

More wip: and I also took the same image and created a planetside view. Let me know which you like!

Thanks dude! Coming from you that's so kind; your sh!t is the bomb.

spent another little bit on the first, mostly on the ship design. I made it less....dorky, but now it looks like a cross between a frog, a bird and a mantis..need to channel my animals selectively so it works better. lol

pixeltuner: that came out nicely i like the effects on the exhaust and the simplicity of your eow looks great.
marko: i dont think your current wip is sticking to the brief. but i do like the idea.
monketbread: thats coming out great, are you gonna add blasts from the sun i think its called solar flares, im also struggling with the planet sizes, the hard part is showing depth i think.
artiphats: thats a pretty clean image, i guess your probe can be super messy?!?!
incinerated: liking those work quickies, the probes are done cleverly.

taking a break, hey who says painting in lens flares is so unskillful? anyways looks a little dead spacey f***

Hi everyone. There are some good entries in this thread.
Monkey bread, your composition is very good, I'm looking forward to the final.

I've been meaning to enter one of these contests for the longest time...I am a hardcore enviro guy. Some of the topics are too hard or not my styles but this one is right up my alley.

Here is what I have so far. The probe is just a placeholder, I will redo it in Maya.
